As Emerson is reeled back into time I'm reminded of the TV show Downton Abby and the staff that make the house and show a great success.
Emerson is your typical teenager with technology being a staple in her life. When she is punished for an argument and forced to clean the hot, dirty attic Emerson finds herself rummaging through items that where once the objects of enjoyment to older generations. In her process of cleaning she finds a trunk that houses a blue velvet hat. Out of curiosity and glamour Emerson places the hat on her head and admires the old fashion style. Next thing you know she's taken off into a world in which she doesn't know or understand. But Emerson has little problems adjusting to this new world.
With Lizzy's help, Emerson is able to navigate enough through the strange world without too many "slip ups" of the 21st century mindset she holds. Emerson travels for a reason, but to understand the reason she must understand and grow with the story. Davis does a great job of incorporating the young, old, new and historic together in this story line.

I found that changing my mind set back to being a young kid helped me understand the writing style more than anything. As an adult the mystery of the book felt empty with extreme detail missing, however for a tween these details most likely would mean nothing to the reader. Adult books feel much more in depth vs. This is a great book that dives the reader into many different genres; mystery, suspense, and time travel; a way to build the young readers interest on numerous levels and having them want more.

Feb 13, Sally rated it really liked it Shelves: Aww I just loved this! It reminded me a little of one of my favourite books, Charlotte Sometimes. Both Emerson and Charlotte mysteriously traveled back in time and took the place of someone who they looked exactly the same as, so nobody else in that time had any reason to suspect they weren't that person! Although Emerson managed to travel across space as well as time, going from her 21st century home in the US to a Victorian manor house where suddenly she's one of the maids. It seemed her 'reason' for traveling back in time was to foil the kidnapping of Genevieve, but that just makes me wonder if she rewrote and 'fixed' history by doing that, like with the TV series Mirror Mirror, however I don't believe so, since it turned out that Genevieve was her great great?
It was seriously awesome either way, and maybe the only point was for her to not take everything for granted so much. And it was a fun era for her to go back to, from a reader's point of view at least - not so much fun for her with all the chores she had to do! I'm definitely interested to read more in this series, even if I'm probably twice the target age group.
This one was good fun and a quick and compelling read, just so enjoyable for a lazy afternoon. What would you do if you were suddenly transported back in time? Emerson McBride is a normal teenager, sent to the clean the attic because of some mischief her brother had gotten her into.
Not thrilled to be in the dusty dirty attic, she begins exploring and finds a beautiful velvet hat. Before she can figure out what happened, she's living the life of a maid in a manor house years before in England. Emerson struggles to figure out how to live in a time without all the modern conveniences she What would you do if you were suddenly transported back in time? Emerson struggles to figure out how to live in a time without all the modern conveniences she's use to, how to live without her family and how to live as a servant.
She's also like to figure out how to get back to her own time. The longer she lives in this time, however, the more she's sure something sinister is going on in the house. This book is written for an audience of about year olds, I believe. It is an engaging, well-written book that I enjoyed.
It's fun and imaginative.

I appreciate that it's not full of angst and darkness as so many children and young adult books are these days. This is exactly the kind of book I will be recommending to my granddaughters at this age and the kind of book that makes kids like to read.

I received this book through Netgalley and I appreciated the opportunity to read it and give it an honest review. Feb 16, Stacie rated it really liked it Shelves: The Blue Velvet is an exciting tale that takes readers on a thrilling adventure back in time to a mysterious home with secret passageways, a one eared stranger, and a startling kidnapping.
While being forced to clean the attic as punishment, Emerson discovers an old trunk. As Emerson examines the trunk's contents she begins to feel lightheaded and passes out. Emerson thinks it's all just a bad dream, but is it? The Blue Velvet is an imaginative, well-penned story that shifts seamlessly between the 's and present day. Readers are pulled into the past right along with the main character and the interesting events that unfold as a result are captivating. I highly recommend picking up a copy. Jun 06, Donna rated it it was amazing.
I think that it is especially funny when Emerson, the main character, thinks to herself; for example: I did find it a tad odd how Emerson traveled back and forth through time, without touching the hat that got her there in the first place, again. Also, I would have liked to know what the fight with her brother was about and why did she get punished and not her brother; how is that fair? Other than that, I give this book 4. Book read and reviewed by 10 year old.

The book was thoroughly entertaining, and well written. Emerson's voice could be heard very well through the writing. When the next book comes out, or available, I'm sure the girlfriend will be looking forward to that. Sep 25, Charlene Connors rated it it was amazing Shelves: Thank you Goodreads for this beautiful book. First I loved the cover art, it drew me to the book and made me want to read it.
I found the story to be charming and definitely one that i can share with my grandchildren. The plot kept my interest, the characters are engaging and nicely developed, the mystery clever; when it was over i wanted to read more! Great book as a read aloud for children and a great book for children teens and adults alike! Cute characters nice action great mystery and interestingly inventive plot line. This is an excellent book for kids and adults alike. This book grabs you from the beginning and you hate to see the story end. Can't wait to read the next book! Jul 29, Phoebe Eckstein rated it really liked it. From my book review blog: I was very excited when I got the email. This is my first time accepting an invitation to review a new book.
I decided to review both books together because they have things in common and they both were easy to read. Emerson McBride is a year-old girl who lives in an old Victorian house somewhere in America. Both books are about how Emerson travels back in time where she meets some of her ancestors. In both books, Emerson takes the place of somebody else in the past. She and the person exchange places in time. In the first book she goes back in time alone to a late 19th century English manor owned by a wealthy family.
In the second she goes with her friend Sarah to a midth century traveling circus. I like Emerson because she is determined and loyal.
For example, when she followed the kidnappers in the first book she was determined to catch them and get Genevieve back home. She is also daring. In the second book when she was riding a circus horse, she tried to do a trick that she had seen in a 21th century circus. I also really like Hannah who only appears in the second book.
Hannah is deaf, but her other senses are much sharper than usual. She is the only one in both of the books that realizes that Emerson has taken the place of the person in the past. She is also smart and friendly. I should say that the stories do have a few gaps. For example, in the second book Emerson tells Sarah that when they go back in time, the people they take the place of, travel forward in time. However, nothing explains how Emerson knows that.
The books also do not explain what happens to the people who go forward in time. I think maybe Ms. Davis should think about writing a story that fills in these gaps. Over all, I really enjoyed both books and think girls ages will also like them. Oct 07, Book Preview Review rated it really liked it Shelves: Her purpose is to enthrall young readers by introducing new vocabulary, geography, history, mystery and a bit of science. The cover art is wonderfully illustrated. Easily yet creatively well written and incredibly descriptive.
The story begins and immediately draws the reader into the fast paced and exciting plot. A study guide for educators, librarians and students is available directly from the author. It is incredibly helpful, very detailed, fun and easy to follow. She offers a character list, chapter questions, vocabulary review, activities, word searches and crossword puzzles. Chapter questions are multilayered and not only thorough, but also very engaging especially for those readers who struggle with reading comprehension.
Davis helps to make the reader think deeper and try to relate. These questions begin as a platform for connections to every day life. I personally loved how some questions prompt further research by asking the reader what things are — those not commonly known to a young reader. I would recommend this story to readers in grades Nov 17, Robin Morgan rated it it was amazing Shelves: I got a DOC.
I find the vehicle the author uses to have her main character, Emerson, quite interesting, if not unique. In this story Emerson gets sent to clean the attic as punishment for fighting with her younger brother; cleaning is something she really hates doing. As she cleans she finds a velvet hat, puts it o I got a DOC.
As she cleans she finds a velvet hat, puts it on; she then she immediately feels dizzy and passes out. After some time she had a gut feeling that something sinister was afoot, and through true grit and tenacity she proved she had been correct as she watched all the culprits involved being led away by the local constable. Emerson then ran to the attic and saw nothing had apparently changed.
Had her adventure to the past been only a dream; but how could it have been, especially after she found a yellowed envelope in a copy of Pride and Prejudice on the floor and a certain locket at the bottom of the trunk. Apr 24, Michelle rated it it was amazing. That is, until she is sent up to clean the attic. What happens there will surprise you. Emerson finds herself on her back in a large room, not her attic. A strange voice keeps telling her to wake up and is calling her Emma. An old trunk reveals a blue velvet hat, decidedly from an era in the past.
As Emerson plays with it, she drifts off and wakes in the late 19 th century. It's not so easy to adjust to this lifestyle without modern conveniences. Emerson is an upbeat teenager, she manages with some difficulties, always aware that sooner or later someone will find out that she tries but doesn't always fit perfectly as Emma in this unfamiliar world of the past.. Kathleen Andrews Davis writes this story with great fluency. One wants to root for Emerson and admires her courage, alertness and zest for adventure.
I loved Emerson's inner dialogue. It's a page turner. The book inspires children to think about the people living in the past century, before computers, cell phones and flashlights. I highly recommend this book.
Looking for a time-travel adventure? You're sure to love this one by Kathleen Andrews Davis. The Blue Velvet is the first book in the author's Emerson's Attic series. I love old things and The Blue Velvet didn't disappoint as Emerson McBride, a contemporary teen, is assigned the chore of cleaning the family attic and finds herself transported to another time and place. Emerson's adventures take her back to Victorian times in England filled with mysteries to be solved and adventures to be experienced.
As an adult, I loved this well-crafted tale that is reminiscent of the Pride and Prejudice period with a hint of fantasy from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe threaded through the story. I highly recommend The Blue Velvet to pre-teens through adults who love history, mystery and adventure. This novel brings a new slant about teenage behavior. It shows that teens can be thoughtful and responsible as opposed to the usual stubborn characters that dominate the genre.
I highly recommend it if you want to set an example of good behavior and altruism. There are no vampires or witches and yet it is entertaining and exciting to see what Emerson will do. Emerson is quite savy and brave in this adventure. I would highly recommend it to young people. I can't wait to see what she gets into next. A special read for students in upper elementary grades.
Lively paced suspense mystery that will delight and hold their interest. Looking forward to future books by author Kathleen Davis. Unlimited One-Day Delivery and more.
