Very good, if I think it means I exist, you can't go wrong with that — even though none ever doubted his own existence But from here, he then deduces — wait for it — that if you can think about yourself as disconnected from space and time and imagine yourself outside any place or any time, it must mean that the soul exists independently of the body and any physical or temporal constraint.

Is this the rigorous and scientific method? Where does he get that concept of soul? He spends his time complaining about paralogisms of other people, and then he pulls out a: After that, he goes on to say that reality exists outside of us so far so good but asserts that by saying that if reality was the fruit of our imagination we would be perfect, infinite, all mighty, eternal, like a god in our own universe. And since we are not perfect and not all mighty, our environment exists outside of us Naturally, he then informs us that we can define the nature of god by elimination, because He is flawless.

So if we can imagine a flaw in ourselves, those are flaws that god does not have.

He has no imaginable flaws so he has the rest, which means every quality. Funny how one can go from philosophy to theology with "science". And that's where I stopped. Brackets and em dash probably did not exist since he never uses them. Commas on the other hand, he loves them and uses them skilfully to divide big paragraphs into smaller ones, but just as heavy.

After a couple of line, you don't know what is the main clause, what is the subordinate, the subordinate of the subordinate I had to reread each sentence two or three times to decipher the meaning. But then, if you have to go through dubious speculations based on a pseudo-scientific method I can appreciate the importance he had on the history and development of philosophy, and the attempt to add a new method of reasoning in such a messy discipline.

I found it repugnant, arrogant, illogical, and hypocritical.

I am a real lover of French books and tend to go for the ones that have won awards and always read lots of reviews before purchasing. This book really surprised me. It didn't have too many reviews on the French Amazon website however I decided to give it a go based on the reviews that I did read.

Without giving too much away, the story is about a mother who has two children but who misses work life. So to resolve this, they hire a nanny to look after their children. The whole novel focuses on the nanny - her past, her present and her thoughts on her future and how to forge this. In spite of an eeriness and sense of doom throughout the whole novel, Leila Slimani's extraordinary writing skills and sense of suspense keep us going right to the end. Interested to read some more of her work! A very interesting and intriguing novel if a little depressing.

Written in excellent clear modern French. I plan to study it with an adult French group. I would pitch it just below A level standard. The nanny employed by a busy French family, apparently the ideal choice, turns out to be not quite what she seems Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Very well written and insightful novel from the viewpoint of both a child's nanny and her professional employer's family in Paris. Touches on other social issues, such as the lives of the "sans papiers". I found the drama and structure a bit vague.
