Nov 07, Brixton rated it did not like it Recommends it for: Many reviewers say this book is especially good for boys. Let's take a look at what is "good for boys": Sisters are only concerned with shopping, clothes, looking and smelling pretty; always ridiculing Kit male , calling him names, etc.
Mother and female teacher always punishing Kit. When Kit gets in trouble in class, the school principal male decides not to punish him, encourages him instead to draw, and teaches Kit an important life lesson. Dad buys new pet fish when Kit and Arnold friend Many reviewers say this book is especially good for boys. Dad buys new pet fish when Kit and Arnold friend kill one belonging to sisters, thus saving the boys from sisters' wrath; mom grounds Kit and Arnold for a week. Dad negotiates with Arnold's parents and drives Arnold home when he tries to run away; mom screams at Kit and threatens him with jail.
Mom and sisters drawn to look exactly the same. Dad, Kit and Arnold drawn with different features. All female characters drawn angry, screaming, with huge mouths full of sharp, pointed teeth. Kit draws sisters as monsters. Kit cooperates with token school bully male to make him a better comedian, thus the school bully ceases to bully and all boys become friends.
All males have personality traits, interests, talents, hobbies, activities. Sisters never make friends or do anything except walk around in pairs, either picking on Kit, or complimenting each other and their mother, whose only activities are shopping and cooking for family. There are no other girls in story. Mom calls sisters her "lovely smelling babies", sisters call her their "beautiful mommy".
One sister is quoted as saying, "Beautiful girls are never lonely". These are the kinds of things that teach boys and girls how to be boys and girls, how they appear to others, and what they can be when they grow up. And this is just one pg example of why girls grow up with poor self-image, overly concerned with superficial aspects of themselves and others, while boys grow up with individuality, belief in their ability to impact their universe, encouraged to be cooperative with and supportive of other males, but sexist and hostile toward girls and women, whose only function is to look nice for the purpose of finding companionship so that they may someday have, feed, and school children even though they are scary, dominating and mean toward boys.
I am disturbed reviewers are recommending this for K Call me old-fashioned, but in this house, we did alright with A.

Milne, Beatrix Potter, and Dr. Nothing in this book is "good for boys" or girls, because boys and girls grow up to be men and women-- and I'd rather men and women get along with each other. Jul 29, Erin Reilly-Sanders rated it liked it Shelves: At last a book that actually seems funny!
As a graphic novel, it's somewhat lacking in the quality of art category, but I think that the casual, messy, almost ugly feel to the drawings is entirely appropriate to the material and age level. The illustration feels somewhat immature with a very simplistic style and pretty crude facial expressions.
However, the book makes up for the art with enthusiasm, simple jokes, and a likable hero backed by a little bit of story about moving, making friends, an At last a book that actually seems funny! However, the book makes up for the art with enthusiasm, simple jokes, and a likable hero backed by a little bit of story about moving, making friends, and bullying with a nice but not hit-you-over-the-head morals.
I think that Kit Feeny has some of the appeal of Diary of a Wimpy Kid but without the extra text and appropriate to younger audiences. I also think that Kit is a lot nicer person that Greg, not that he's at all a saint but the humour is not based about treating other people badly so that Kit can learn from his mistakes when necessary.
From Best Friend to Bully
While, the book is certainly a boy book, I enjoyed it a lot as a girl, although likely because I was able to get past the stereotyped sisters and mother who run around in floor-length dresses. I think the dress code is due to the artist's lack of ability to convey gender via facial structure and at least doesn't depict through body shape by giving each female little breasts. The female characters are dull, uninteresting, and are portrayed as antagonists primarily concerned with how beautiful they look and smell, in that they antagonize the main character.
But Kit Feeny is certainly a fun little read if the art style and the female characters don't turn you off. Oct 27, Christiane rated it liked it Shelves: Orange, black and white rather than pink and with a funny, gross boy narrator 1st-3rd grade boys who wouldn't be caught in public with a Babymouse will probably love this; will also appeal to Captain Underpants fans. Dec 15, Hilary rated it really liked it Shelves: Kit Feeny has moved and is attempting to find a replacement for his best friend Arnold. He's looking for someone who loves graphic novels, bouncy balls, cheese sculputres, and general mischief making.
