Though not a scholar of history or cultural studies, I would posit that this volume is a must-read for anyone who studies colonization from either of these perspectives.

I would say that the author provides his readers with a very intriguing perspective of Russian colonial literature and history. What I like the most is the fact that the book inspires for exploration and learning. And even if you think that you are already prepared for another intellectual challenge, the author surprises you with new facts and his very unusual and intelligent interpretation of them. I never finished this one.

It explains the enmity felt towards Arakcheev, a prominent villain figure of the popular interpretation of Russian history, as he was using unproven methods of internal colonization, which emphasised the primate of collective over the individual.

The book makes a strong point towards Russian individualism, successfully de-emphasised by the years of propaganda in Western countries and a more complete and balanced understanding of the inclusive, outside-inward, state and ethnicity formation in Russia. By this he means a kind of colonization that involves colonizing one's own people as well as others, something Russia achieved by domesticating its own heartlands. Etkind explores serfdom and the peasant commune, as well as the formative role of foreign colonies in Russia, and the revolutionary leaders' hopes for an alliance with the pacifist sectarians.

Written by a leading scholar in the field, this path-breaking book will be essential reading for all students of Russian history and literature and for anyone interested in the literary and cultural aspects of colonization and its aftermath.
