The stories take place between and However, Mr Ashley extended the period to the end of the short reign of James I's grandson and namesake, James II, who was deposed in Of course, Shakespeare makes an appearance, though not as a detective. Perhaps a general disinterest in the time period exerts an influence. For those who have series that they read, Susanna Gregory's contribution features her Thomas Chaloner character. Her Matthew Bartholomew series is much better. Fiona Buckle This is a collection of short mysteries set during the Jacobean period, although not confined solely to the British Isles. Fiona Buckley has used Ursula Blanchard and was one of the best in the bunch and Edward Marston's Christopher Redmayne is featured in a story.
Beyond that, other authors like Marilyn Todd who usually writes the Claudia books set in the Roman Empire, contributed stories that were one-offs for now. Jun 02, Jen rated it it was amazing. One of the most delightful things about this collection of short stories, I think, is that it doesn't require a full Jacobean knowledge going in. The editor has a paragraph or two at the beginning of each story that sets the scene, as well as recommending other books by the same author, which is great.
The stories themselves are, for the most part, wonderful--which is great, coming from someone who doesn't really like short stories. Plus, all the highlights of the time period are there; we have One of the most delightful things about this collection of short stories, I think, is that it doesn't require a full Jacobean knowledge going in.

Full disclosure, historical fiction is high on the list of things I avoid reading. No judgments against those who enjoy it, I just find it a bit silly, trying to force the characters into unlikely scenarios that inevitably are interesting historical events.
