Marion Milner

It's such a treat to be let into the mind of someone who sounds like such a vibrant and interesting person. I found myself Googling the author to see what she looked like, find out her background and gather any and all info that I could about her. The conclusions Milner draws while exploring her own psyche so mirrored my own experience with personal growth and exploration that sometimes it was almost hard to believe. This might not be the case for you, but I've spoken to a friend who said the same thing and I'd imagine that others out there have had similar experiences!

What's more is that she fleshes out these ideas so well I know this all sounds incredibly vague, but trust me - it's worth reading. If you've ever embarked on a journey of personal growth, experienced psychotherapy, or considered one or both of these things I think you'll really enjoy this book. This is one of the most remarkable and impressive books I have ever read. Psikanalizin dogus yillarinda yazilan bu kitap bence cok degerli. Freud etkisi fazla ama yine de yol gosterici ve guzel.

Oct 31, Safae rated it really liked it. I always seemed to be looking for something, always a little distracted because there was something more important to be attended to just ahead of the moment. For I had taken the surface ripples for all there was, when actually happenings of vital importance to me had been going on, not somewhere away from me, but just underneath the calm surface of my own mind. Though some of these discoveries were not entirely pleasant, bringing with them echoes of terror and despair, at least they gave me a sense of being alive.

Most importantly, what her findings reveal about my own inner world is something that would stay with me for a while. This is a book worth reading. They flourished in the No-man's land of mind where a thing could be both itself and something else at the same time, and the only way to deal with them was to stop all attempts to be reasonable and to give the thoughts free rein. In dealing with other people this meant just listening while they talked out whatever was in their minds, in dealing with myself it usually meant letting my thoughts write themselves. Aug 15, Leslie added it. I just reread this book, by Joanna Field, a pseudonym for Marion Milner, a famous psychoanalyst.

I can relate to her interest in coping with the "chattering mind" , and it's a really interesting self-exploration.

Jan 30, Nergis rated it liked it. I knew that it was a self book about a woman's 7 years' experiences around the things making her happy but everything was so dull for me. So did not quite like but it was ok.

Insightful book compiled from the musings and diaries of a 27 year old woman in the 's. It bogged down and was repetitive in many places but the kernels she imparted were well worth the wading through words that is required. They were not 'given' as in geometry, staying there at the top of the page while all you had to do was argue about them, they were things which changed completely according to what one said about them, or the way one looked.

Whether they had a substratum of reality in themselves or not did not concern me, I could leave that to the philosophers to argue about, but what appeared to me was a never-ending murmuring sea of space all about me, above my head, beneath my feet and on every side. What happened, while awake I could never escape it. All I could do was to some extent make deliberate choice of the part of the sea I would look at and under my looking it at once took shape. I open my eyes I had shut them in the effort to express this clearly and find myself looking at my desk, aware of it heavy and solid, in my room, on the top floor looking out over the garden, in a familiar street, in London I can go on a long time, making a more and more complicated network which spreads its form out on all sides and shapes in the enveloping vagueness, like the thin patterning of ice which begins to film across a pond in the stillness of winder woods at nightfall, fixing the idly floating leaves immovable.

If I shut my eyes now so that I cannot see my desk, the chirp of sparrows becomes the centre of my thought, now making its pattern agains the murmuring dar emptiness of space. Again if I choose I can send out the streamers of my thought on ever side, fixing the sound in the knowledge of the roof above my window, the sky above that the garden beneath
