For instance, one regressee ran two lives concurrently. In one he was a prim upright Royalist during the English Civil War who aspired to piety but struggled with repressed disbelief. In his second life, he was a clever but uneducated eleven year old boy who lived near the Severn in Edwardian times. He had a crippled leg after an accident. He prided himself on crudity and daring. He enjoyed blasphemy but had a sneaking fondness for religion which he tried to deny.
I felt it quite an eerie experience going over the Severn Bridge after that, knowing that was where the boy had lived. I was too young or too obtuse to see that this was not a case of real reincarnation. The two personae were two sides of the same coin. They were of interest. They told you something about the regressed person's psyche.
I was quite convinced about the reality of reincarnation.

The reason for it was that under regression, people could speak languages they couldn't normally speak. When I was 18, our religious studies teacher began to speak of reincarnation and other explanations for apparently anachronistic memories.
He said that some people thought ancestral memories could be transmitted through sperm. This is of course entirely fanciful. He went on to speak of a woman who could remember being caught up in the pogrom in York in medieval times. But if the person who owned the memory died violently as a child - and a female child I think - it wouldn't have been passed on to descendants through semen.

He told another story to counterbalance this. It was of an ordinary woman who had left school at 14 and worked as a cleaner. She was undereducated as working people were at that time, and developed no discernible intellectual curiosity later. In old age, she was in hospital in a coma or persistent semi consciousness.
She was muttering to herself constantly. Everyone thought it was gibberish.

Then the vicar came to visit the patient in the next bed. He recognised the muttering as something other than gibberish.

The old woman was reciting the psalms in Hebrew. This mystery was accounted for by everyone as a clear case of reincarnation.
That's what they thought until they looked a bit closer at the old woman's present life. One of her first jobs as a skivvy had been in a house where a rabbi was teaching his sons the psalms in Hebrew. But I did not totally give up my faith in regression as evidence of reincarnation until it became obvious that Paul McKenna could induce hypnotised subjects to speak languages they couldn't usually speak without regressing them to past lives.
After I had lost my faith, I met my real mother's sisters in Pembrokeshire. They were into every New Age fad going. One of them had been regressed to two interesting past lives. In one she had been a Jewish boy who died in a concentration camp. In the other, she had been murdered by Jack the Ripper. Dafydd ap Geler Thomas commented, ''And she still came back for more!
A poor person was convinced she had been Joan of Arc in a previous life. She could remember being burnt at the stake. But the regression revealed that she had been one of the victims of the Salem witch craze. There was just one thing wrong with this - apart from the uncanny significance and interestingness of all the lives. I had been an inveterate bookworm from childhood. I was sure the 'Book of Lists One' stated that not one of the Salem 'witches' had been burnt at the stake.
Some had been executed by other means such as being pressed to death or hanging, some may or may not have died in prison. Some were even released after the community had come to its senses. None of the 'Pendle' witches were burnt either but simply hanged. Throughout his schooldays he kept his experience pretty much to himself. The book in question is Mohican Reborn. Under hypnosis he experienced past life regression which helped him open up and confirm his experiences. It was a very interesting time when you had a clash of cultures as the settlers from Europe were trying to establish themselves in the new world.
And the indigenous population who were already there — the people settlers called natives or Indians, they were seen as the savages, the ungodly. A lot of problems occurred from that clash of cultures.

He found out about life inside the colonies and the ships that brought them to the land. Once he heard about France there was nothing to keep him where he was and he set off. There are plenty of great names from history who believed in life after death — people such as Pythagoras, Goethe, Voltaire and Rudyard Kipling.

In the legend, Chingachgook's son, Uncas, is the original propagator of the Order. Chingachgook wanted to create a band of volunteers from all the nations of the Delaware River valley to support and protect their collective interests. Uncas volunteered to be the first member of such a group, and thus the Order of the Arrow was founded.
