Based at The Salvation Army in Sturges Road, the centre will be open every day and aims to provide a warm and safe place for its users. It has been organised by Wokingham In Need WIN , a new charity that works within the town to help the vulnerable and sees several groups work together to help provide the facilities. As part of the support, a new portable cabin has been installed at the Salvation Army site, providing a storage unit ready to provide necessary supplies to drop-in centre visitors.
It was installed on a Saturday morning in early December by a specialist team who lifted it into place. And volunteers from WIN were able to assist in giving presents and a Christmas cake baked by a volunteer to the homeless on Christmas Eve. WIN also distributed toys to children over Christmas, bringing a little joy into their lives. Is your son or daughter getting married this summer? Has someone you know recently passed their exams? Name of nominated group or organisation Exploratory work starts on Monday. From Monday, and over the course of January, the council will create 22 holes in the area around the Town Hall as part of a special pre-construction phase ahead of works to create a new paved area. When completed, the pavements will be relaid with non-slip materials and on the same levels, dedicated disabled parking and loading bays will be created and new power supplies will be installed to make it easier for market traders.
The pavements will be the same across all sides of Market Place, including the side where The Red Lion pub is based. The Town Council said in a statement released earlier this week that everyone is looking forward to a newly refurbished Market Place. During the pre-construction phase, the 22 trial holes will be dug in Market Place and the Town Council said that these are necessary.
The Town Council said that its Market Place neighbours are already aware and will also be contacted again where they are directly affected. The council is also promising that every effort will be made to minimise the impact of the work but it will cause some disruption and is likely to be noisy at times. Towards the end of the programme the council will divert traffic in Market Place outside Boots. Cars will use the bus lane during these works and buses will temporarily be re-routed. From January 9, over the next 18 months, work will take place to transform Peach Street and the Rose Street Car Park into a new public space.
Dawnus Construction has been appointed by Wokingham Borough Council. Early works on site will include preparing the affected properties for demolition and. Following this, demolition of the affected buildings will start before foundations are laid and construction can begin. The main building works are expected to last until October , with many of the new businesses up and trading by Christmas of that year. Held at the Town Hall in Wokingham town centre, the event saw organising charities come together to present the cheques to representatives from the receiving charities.
Both the borough mayor, Cllr Bob Pitts, and town mayor, Cllr Gwynneth Hewetson, were present for the awards ceremony, which included a buffet and speeches. And it was a special evening for Easthampstead Rotary Club president James Strugnell who not only presented a cheque. New members are welcome and entry is free. Meetings take place from 7. Shortly before Christmas, the Woosehill underpass was freshened up thanks to mural artist Dean Tweedy who has previously painted murals in Lower Earley. Within days of the work ending, graffiti artists used the pictures as a canvas.
The scrawl include several words unrepeatable in a family newspaper and crude drawings of phallus. The yobs also smeared the walls with excrement. One, who did not wish to be named, said: And it turns out that Wokingham Borough Council, which commissioned the work, did not apply a protective layer to the artwork, blaming weather conditions. Perhaps this should have been thought through better as it was always understood that a protective coat was required and that this may not be able to be done in cold weather. His daughter-in-law Nicola said in a statement that during the evening Mr Hawkins became incoherent and started to vomit, causing the family to call an ambulance.
By the time South Central Ambulance Service arrived at the house, Mr Hawkins was slipping in and out of consciousness and he was transferred to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, where he sadly died in the early hours of the following day. The coroner Ravi Sidhu told the inquest that medical evidence showed Mr Hawkins had suffered a stroke which had caused him to fall, and hitting his head on the hard floor had caused a massive subdural haemorrhage. He had suffered a heart attack in May , was diagnosed with kidney disease in , and had a coronary bypass in He also had high blood pressure.
And, in a separate development John Redwood MP has warned that even if the scheme goes ahead, there is no guarantee that development across the rest of the borough will be reduced. On Monday, the Government announced the 17 sites for the new garden villages and towns. Although Grazeley was not one of the schemes announced, the Government said that due to a high level of interest from councils.
Last autumn, Wokingham Borough Council teamed up with neighbouring councils to produce the planned submission of interest in secret, but the plans were leaked to the local media. If they get the go-ahead, there could be more than 15, homes built on the site, complete with appropriate infrastructure. The plans caused local councillor Gary Cowan to resign the Conservative whip in protest. Writing in his blog before Christmas, he warned that having a local plan for housebuilding does not necessarily mean that councils would be able to halt development across the areas.

The group said that an announcement by the Government, to give the green light for the construction of thousands of Starter Homes is great but leaves greater challenges as the country attempts to solve its housing crisis. The event will be held on Tuesday, January 17 at its Slough offices in Edinburgh Avenue from 9am to 4. It includes a look at elements of a good export deal, building quotations and making payments. A lot happened in , including movements to the Wokingham property market and a big year for from left Sir Andy Murray, Donald Trump and the Bake Off.
In the last month, Wokingham property values rose by 1. All three statistics go to show the Wokingham property market has recovered well after the summer lull. Asking prices worsened due to uncertainty surrounding the EU vote back in June. Generally, Wokingham asking prices continue to hold up well at 4. At this time of year, asking prices tend to drop on the run up to Christmas and locally, they dropped by 2.
But it is very early days and it could be the time of year. Also, the numbers are limited. This suggests that there will not be a downward pressure on property values. After a number of years of double digit rises in property values, affordability has weakened and cooling price increases are widely seen as a natural correction of the market. On the other hand, interest rates at a record low of 0. The cut in interest rates in late summer was medicine for the post-Brexit worry and will, as a consequence, ensure that the UK economy continues to be underpinned by buoyant property prices.
So, what will happen in in the Wokingham property market? Some say until we know what type of exit the UK will make from the EU it is hard to evaluate the outcome. Although, I believe, the whole Brexit issue is a sideshow to the main issue in the UK and Wokingham housing market as a whole. As I have mentioned time and time again over the last few months, the biggest issue is demand outstripping supply when it comes to the number of households required to house us all.

The introduction of the Care Certificate programme in has professionalised the industry and introduced a robust set of key skills and care worker behaviours that seeks to provide genuine person centred care, promoting independence and autonomy. This should enable care providers to deliver high quality and holistic services that are for the genuine good of the customer and address their emotional needs as well as the practical requirements of care such as washing, dressing, cleaning, cooking and medication.
However, on the other hand the constant striving for reduced costs in both the public and the private sectors has eroded this intent. This shows in the real-world with a trend towards low-quality, cheap, short stop care visits that focus on practical tasks and not the customer as a whole. After all, it has been clearly shown that most people accepting care-in-the-home are also in danger of being isolated, lacking interaction and often lacking genuine companionship as friends and family become less accessible and available.
After all most people with strong family connections in the locality will never enter the care provision market. For individuals and councils paying for this care this is to an extent understandable as many people cannot afford the luxury of longer value-added care visits but we believe this is a short-sighted view. Through our own customer and employee feedback surveys we have seen that care workers providing care in the home who are given the time to do a more holistic role provide enormous benefits for the customer and the employee; after all our employees say that more than anything they enjoy the relationship.
Keith Deane, Chief Executive Officer, Support Horizons Community Interest Company and genuine caring nature of these roles and the customers over time become notably more confident and self-reliant. We believe that this approach is far better and as such as a provider we do not offer care visits under one hour.
This more holistic approach we believe also benefits that larger health system as clients who are engaged, related to and communicated with are far less likely to worsen, suffer from depression and ultimately require higher levels of more expensive care later on. It works for them as employees and it works for the customer too.

The land, classified as protected woodland, had never received planning consent from the council, however areas of hard standing, services and utilities had been installed without planning permission. The council issued a number of enforcement notices for the mobile homes to be removed and the land to be restored to its previous condition, but the owner of the site, Felix Cash, repeatedly failed to comply.
Mr Cash appealed against the enforcement notices, but the Planning Inspectorate upheld the decisions made to turn down his retrospective applications, and dismissed his appeals. However, following a recent High. Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Bracknell Forest in He loved this area.

About our courage, our standing up to tyranny, how we stand alongside the suffering and defeated. How we stand for human dignity and hope. It says something vitally important about our generosity.
Thanks to our creative, innovative spirit, this vibrant and diverse city is also a hugely welcoming place. Last year we made a decision that will profoundly affect the future of our country — a decision made democratically by the people. The EU referendum was a tough campaign and it has left divisions. We love to hear from you! If the aim of the Hurst Village Society HVS was to remind drivers of speed limits why did they not install conventional circular signs rather than the large green monstrosities that now blight the countryside?
If these signs are designed to reduce speed to 30mph upon entering Hurst why are some of them erected two miles from the village in a 60mph zone? Fifty years ago pictograms and symbols became the template for British road signs with the aim of conveying information and warnings in a clear and quickly understood manner. At a time when there has been a lot of media coverage given to mobile phones and other electronic devices that distract drivers it is somewhat absurd that Hurst wishes to add to the list of distractions with these cryptic signs.
Clearly no one in Hurst has read this directive. Our commonsense reforms will help get rid of pointless signs that are an eyesore and distract drivers. These signs are destined to rank in the history of pointlessness alongside those erected in the s by left-wing councils proclaiming their towns as nuclear free zones. Peter Humphreys, via email. One of these invisible voiceless groups is people who use telephone boxes. A consultation has taken place about the removal of 19 telephone boxes from the Wokingham Borough Council area. This consultation was little more than a tick-box exercise and received hardly any publicity.
This is the box at the Junction of Hearn Road and Drovers Way, Woodley, which was used for calls in the last 12 months. Usage of the other boxes on the list ranged from zero to 92 calls in 12 months. CARP is trying to protect phone boxes for two reasons. First, because some people still use them. Secondly, because they could be a useful back-up if terrorists succeed in disabling the mobile phone network. Housing over green space 56, more housing. That is what our council is imposing on us over the next 20 years.
Berkshire is the smallest county in the South, yet we are agreeing to more and more houses than any other county? J W Blaney, Wokingham. What are they getting out of agreeing to such huge amounts of housing? The problem being half our councillors do not live here and do not care. I have written time and time again that this council is fast making our town and surroundings another Bracknell the Second.
We are losing our identity and, with the proposed 56, housing, we will be one big sprawl of boxes and concrete from Reading to Bracknell, with Wokingham in the middle. Above all, all the wildlife habitats destroyed, losing more wildlife including birds, with more now on the danger list. Again, our councillors just do not care, only about getting their own way in anyway they can. Over the past few weeks the council have employed a company known as Marvellous Marvels to decorate the long walls with scenes of landscaped gardens.
Every day I passed through with my dog they were hard at work and it was fascinating to see it develop. Reddam pupils go potty for reading OVER the past couple of weeks, there has been a real focus on books and passion for reading at Reddam House Junior School. It started with a visit from renowned author, Alan Gibbons, who came to speak to our Year 5 and 6 classes about being an author.
Whilst he was with us he officially opened our Junior School library, which has recently been beautifully refurnished, and delighted the children with his funny anecdotes. Friday evening was the culmination of our celebrations when years were invited back to school for a Harry Potter Book Night.
After the feast Harry, Ron, Hermione and co participated in a treasure hunt before they ended the night with hot chocolate, marshmallows and a book reading. A fantastic time was had by all! In the library, there was a display featuring favourite books from teachers and a note explaining why, as well as book covers redesigned by Year 8s.
A Literacy evening helped youngsters get to grips with their reading, while there was also a trip to meet author Michael Grant. There had been delays due to waiting for storm Doris and the bad weather to pass. Two Luckley minibuses transported the children to the school, just in time for lunch. The excited pupils then began the workshop. During the two-hour session, they explored the history of glue and. They then enjoyed creating some stunning pieces of artwork in the Art Studios, using PVA glue mixed with different coloured paints. Mr Hill, Year 5 Class Teacher, who accompanied the pupils said: O WE are halfway through another month.
You need to give it TIME to really see change so mid-March is enough time to see how committed people really have been. You see, the problem these days is that most coaches and trainers just want to make more money out of you. I have worked and trained in gyms where supplements just get pushed to members just to make more money. For example, one gym I was in actually sold a protein shake with a whopping 50g of sugar in it per serving?
Really I hear you say? You have to ask yourself whether you actually need the supplement in the first place. I know in the way I work with my clients that there are supplements that everyone could do with and then there are supplements that can be taken when you are doing everything else RIGHT. I touched on this last week, manage your energy balance depending on your goals and you will manage your weight and body composition. This is basically what your body sees all foods as when it breaks them down in the digestive process.
What the list above shows my friend is the order of importance when it comes to Nutrition. If you walk into a gym or a private studio or another training environment and they are trying to push supplements on you before you fix the other six areas then ask for your money back, turn around and train somewhere else. This can be found easily on the back of the pack. You will most likely have some gaps in your Nutrition in terms of certain vitamins and minerals. Taking a good quality multivitamin will help cover you against a deficiency.
As always, your diet should have lots of good quality foods in there. When you are dehydrated, you feel less energised, can get headaches, have dry skin, feel dizzy and just overall operate a lower efficiency than normal. Who wants to feel like that? So there you have it, my HONEST views on supplements and where they rank in terms of other factors when it comes to Nutrition My personal opinion is that other than the basic supplements described above and possibly Creatine too, all that the vast majority of supplements do is burn a hole in your wallet or purse.
Why waste your money when you can spend your time and money focusing on more important areas. Until you get your Nutrition right, nothing is going to change. READ the list of importance above again and again and again today. New research to make your food safer FOOD safety researchers are fighting deadly food-borne bugs by unlocking their defences from the inside, scientists revealed earlier this week. The innovative technique, which is still in development, was unpacked at the Fairbrother Lecture at the University of Reading on Tuesday — along with some top tips on how to your family safe from food poisoning.
However, fresh produce, such as fruits, salads and vegetables, are actually among the main sources of foodborne illness. A lecture at the University of Reading earlier this week revealed some new and innvoative ways to make food safer, avoiding food poisoning in the process Picture: Her research, undertaken as part of a doctoral research project at the University of Reading, looks to unlock the secrets of the bugs e-coli and campylobacter which can sometimes be passed to humans.
Ruth said she is using a novel technique to understand the biological systems protecting bacteria from disinfectant materials and processes used by the food industry. She hopes that by unlocking the systems, food. The type of commonly used disinfectants I work with can be used to wash foods killing bacteria and making them safer to eat. What I am attempting to do is to try to unlock the biological systems protecting the bacteria from these washes, rather than simply using more or harsher chemicals to kill the bacteria. Healthwatch occasionally hears from patients with long term conditions that means they have to learn to live with chronic pain, such as osteoarthritis OA.
Patients are unsure of where else to turn for advice and support. But does it really work? The Health Innovation Network have been focusing on helping people to self-manage their chronic joint pain and have piloted a new approach to managing osteoarthritis OA in Primary Care — the Joint Pain Advisor. The Joint Pain Advisor takes the form of up to four minute face-to-face consultations between the Advisors and people with hip or knee OA.
People attend an assessment where they discuss their lifestyle, challenges and personal goals and then jointly develop a personalised care plan which gives tailored advice and support based on NICE guidelines. People are then invited to attend reviews after three weeks, weeks and six months to access further support and advice. To date over patients have used this service and reported less pain, better function and higher activity levels.
A high satisfaction rate was achieved which included reduced BMI, body weight and waist circumference and has led to fewer GP consultations, investigations and onward referrals. So what kind of lifestyle changes can you make to help manage pain? Learn deep breathing or meditation to help you relax. Deep breathing and meditation are techniques that help your body relax, which may ease pain.
Reduce stress in your life. Boost chronic pain relief with the natural endorphins from exercise. Endorphins are brain chemicals that help improve your mood while also blocking pain signals. Exercise has another pain-reducing effect — it strengthens muscles, helping prevent re-injury and further pain.
Plus, exercise can help keep your weight down, reduce heart disease risk, and control blood sugar levels -- especially important if you have diabetes. Cut back on alcohol, which can worsen sleep problems. Join a support group. Meet others living with chronic pain. At the end of each day, note your pain level on the 1 to Take this log to every doctor visit, so they get a good understanding.

Gone are the days of cycling up to school at 9. Across the country, library visiting has dropped — just over a third of adults visited their local branch in the past 12 months — but when they do go, the satisfaction is high: The facilities available to us in the borough are very good and accessible, so why are we using libraries less? Principally, all their services can be found, much more conveniently, from the oasis of our own home. But this is a mirage.
The library is an experience to be savoured and used. The oasis at the library is satisfying and fulfilling, but the water at home? This is the page you can write! We welcome your articles, poems, pictures and stories for this page. Send your articles to news wokinghampaper. A deep well in a land of no water. The library is an odd creation. We go there to borrow well-worn and much-loved books.
We read them and return them before a fine is incurred. Why does it occupy such an endearing and beloved part in our hearts? Why not simply buy a normal book that you can read endlessly? Yes, it seems much simpler to buy your own book. Although possibly not as large, or as well-stocked as others, it has some extremely comfy seats, a smooth set of computers — useful for that extra bit of Maths homework that slipped through the net. But, like the rest of the country, my visits to this sacred hollow have slipped somewhat. Thanks to Hare Hatch Sheeplands you have the chance to be a Prince or Princess for a day and could ride with Father Christmas in his horse and carriage when he visits the Twyford garden centre later this month.
Santa has told Sheeplands that he will arrive at His route takes him through the centre of Twyford and the winners of our competition will meet him on the village outskirts and ride in his carriage the rest of the way, waving to shoppers as they pass through. On arrival at Sheeplands the winners will be able to escort Santa into his grotto and then enjoy a lunch with their family, courtesy of Sheeplands. The competition is open to all ages and is easy to enter. Just fill in the form printed in this paper and drop it into Sheeplands, or pick up a form next time you visit them.
Alternatively you can simply send your name, age, address, including postcode, plus your telephone number to info hhsheep. Two names will be drawn at random and the winners will be notified directly by Hare Hatch Sheeplands. You are what you eat Some may say this is the most important factor, either way your intake needs to be a focus and this pillar is full of good and bad practices. I like to think that it is a huge factor and not one to be ignored. Now in my thirties I like to watch what I eat that little bit more. Intake refers to all food and drink that we consume on a daily basis.
Our body needs a certain amount of calories each and every day to maintain itself. This is the amount of energy expended at rest by our bodies. Clearly everyone is different in terms of size, age, sex, weight and body fat levels so each and every one of you will have a slightly different BMR. On top of this every one of you will have differing activity levels each day. A kg male who sits at a desk all day will have a different TDEE than a kg male who is on his feet all day.
Every day I see so many people trying to improve themselves but not really following any set strategy when it comes to Nutrition and Intake. Trying to educate you on what you should be doing nutritionally would be impossible in this small weekly column however I do have some simple tactics that you can start doing today that will make a difference immediately. Let me make myself clear, these are just a handful of options and even just adopting one or two will make a huge difference to your journey.
Not only is it more filling, it also helps preserve lean muscle in the body and also helps maintain a healthy metabolism. It can take up to 20 minutes for your brains to register you are full and by this time you could have. My simple guidelines that you can follow on a daily basis will keep you on track when it comes to watching your weight.
If you trying to lose weight this simple tactic will give you results straight away. Hint hint… start taking action with this rule today. I would like to leave you with this quote: Have a great weekend guys and make sure this month is a belter when it comes to focusing in on goals. Those taking the supplement also had lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and healthier blood vessels. The findings could be welcome news for the 18 million adults living with high blood pressure in the UK, which can cause cardiovascular diseases responsible for , deaths in the UK every year. It shows the positive impact that dairy proteins can have on blood pressure.
Those that took part in the double blind, randomised controlled trial drank 56g of protein each day, which is equivalent to protein supplements used by bodybuilders. The research was carried out at the University of. Research has revealed that drinking two protein shakes a day could help with a range of medical issues including blood pressure, arterial stiffness and cholesterol Picture: The study is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and is freely accessible to the public.
How many of you would consider visiting the doctor for a cough and cold this winter? Would you request an X-ray if you were suffering with lower back pain? The Local Government Association LGA , say one in five appointments is for minor ailments, such as runny noses, back pain and colic in children. Figures have shown that last year 40, patients went to their GP due to dandruff and 20, patients made an appointment to talk to their GP about travel sickness. With an overstretched NHS, the only way forward is for patients to be better educated about how to treat themselves without seeing a doctor.
In support of improving health literacy, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges recently published a list of 40 treatments that bring little or no benefit to patients. The list is part of a Choose Wisely campaign to reduce the number of unnecessary medical appointments and treatments. The academy says there is evidence that patients often pressure doctors into prescribing or carrying out unnecessary treatments.
The NHS is also coming under increasing pressure to reduce over-medicalisation — in other words the medicines and treatments it prescribes. For some time now, GPs have been advised to cut back on prescribing antibiotics to patients. The Choose Wisely campaign also encourages patients to ask more questions about procedures, with five key questions recommended: So next time you go to make a GP appointment — choose wisely.
