Prince Phobos
Your display name should be at least 2 characters long. At Kobo, we try to ensure that published reviews do not contain rude or profane language, spoilers, or any of our reviewer's personal information. In the animated show, he is the main antagonist of Season One, but a supporting one in Season Two. Throughout the series, Phobos is portrayed as a vicious and amoral psychopath. Like most clinically diagnosed psychopaths, he can be charming and persuasive when he wants to be as he had Elyon completely taken in and when he convinced her that he was a loving sibling and slowly weened her away from her friends while also feigning concern for her well-being.
However his true ruthless nature is all too apparent in his manipulative treatment of those around him as well as his utter lack of sincerity. He is also prone to violent, mood swings. Phobos is an intelligent being but is given to moments of impulsiveness such as when he almost crosses over into Candracar to conquer it, forgetting that he swore on the Heart of Candracar itself he would not, almost resulting in the loss of all of his strength and magical abilities from both Hearts. It is this overconfident and arrogant side of Phobos's personality that usually contributes to his downfall.
Phobos ranks alongside Nerissa as one of the Guardians' most ruthless adversaries. Irma refers to him as "the triple espresso of evil".
Although Phobos appears youthful, his true age is uncertain; he is known, however, to be very old. One interpretation from the comic book story arcs is that he is an ancient immortal and that he was born shortly after the creation of the universe, which was when the Veil was raised in order to imprison him. Phobos's age is played down in the animated series, where the Veil was raised within living human memory.
Though no specific details are given, it is known that Yan Lin , a mortal human, fought Phobos as a Guardian when she was a young woman, which makes Phobos at least comparable to Yan Lin in age, while leaving open the potential for him to be far older. Phobos may be thousands of years old, indeed.
In the animated series episode "B is for Betrayal", the Oracle tells the Guardians that the Veil was raised 13 years ago when Phobos first came to power, which gives him a significantly different backstory than the comic book although this would mean that thirteen years ago the extremely old Yan Lin was a young woman although this is but one of the many continuity errors in the series. In fact, their father Ares even explicitly states that both are separate individuals within the Ares: God of War mini-series. However, this mini-series takes place before Brian Michael Bendis retconned the origin and abilities of Alex.
Within the mini-series Alex had grown well into his late teens, had acquired a mastery of almost all forms of weaponry, and was well aware of his divine heritage. It is also in Mighty Avengers 13 that Alex is first identified as Ares' son Phobos, and displays abilities similar to the original version of the character. Adding to the confusion, based on the events in The Incredible Hercules it seems that parts of the Ares: God of War mini-series are, in fact, still considered canon.
Namely, Mikaboshi's plot and attempt to destroy the divine pantheons in the Marvel Universe. Since Alex's capture and development were central to Mikaboshi's plan, yet also directly contradict his later appearances in Mighty Avengers and Secret Warriors , the current status of both characters remains unclear. Encyclopaedia Mythologica , the original Phobos and the current Alex are two separate characters. More specifically, they are half-brothers.

The Phobos profile indicates that the original Phobos and his brother Deimos were killed during Mikaboshi's invasion of Olympus, and that Alexander inherited the fear-based powers of his slain older half-brother following his return to Earth. New Nation 1 states the Ares: God of War limited series as the first appearance of Alex. However, this does not indicate if he is meant to be related to the previous Phobos, such as in a re-imagining or reincarnation.
