It's sad really, that such a beautifully written story can be so overlooked, because I found it a treasure! A story of a young man, the second son born to a wealthy family in French-speaking Canada. His father, a business owner, had cut his brother off prior to A first review done by a first-time reviewer! His father, a business owner, had cut his brother off prior to the story because he went to work for the enemy, the direct competition. However Carnac wants to follow his own path as an artist, rather than his father's wish for him to take over the family business.

While in New York, by chance he meets a french woman named Luzanne, who ends up posing for a painting he later sold. Luzanne quickly falls in love with Carnac who, although he finds her beautiful enough to paint, still holds a childhood sweetheart in his heart.

Luzanne's father makes a plan to trick Carnac and to ensure that she would have him forever. By their deceit, Carnac finds himself in a legally-binding but unwanted marriage. Unable to fix his mistake, he returns home without her. His father becomes increasingly frustrated with his son's lack of interest in the business. He takes on another business partner, an ambitious acquaintance of Carnac's.

The father makes a plan that in his will, Carnac will receive nothing of the business and will believe himself cut off like his brother, though a second will was written that would be revealed some six months later. Everyone has secrets, big secrets. It is not just Carnac and his "wife", but his father and even mother have secrets. There is always fear that their secrets will be revealed and all would be lost. All in all, it was a wonderful read. The characters are interesting and the plot, though at times a little unbelievable in the coincidences, flows nicely. I really enjoyed reading this book! It contained many of the things I like: Love, rejection, revenge, deceit and politics.

Carnac Grier is the son of a Canadian logging tycoon, but decides he'd rather have a career in the fine arts rather than managing the family business. He meets a suspicious French woman in New York named Luzanne, and is tricked into marrying her in a Carnac's Folly is a Canadian variant of the Victorian sensation novel genre published.

Our protagonist isn't the only one with things to hide. There are secret murders and secret love affairs too. One character drops dead as soon as he hears a vague hint about one of these backstory complications. Carnac and other Canadians have mastered the powers of clairvoyance and physiognomy, because they can accurately analyze someone's personality based on dubious assumptions about their appearance.

Luzanne looks like an "adventuress", an insult ripped from s British novels. They say sensation novels went out of fashion late in the 19th century in Britain, but the genre must have lasted longer in Canada. Gilbert Parker was once one of the bestselling authors of the early 20th century, but has since fallen into obscurity.
