Scott does an outstanding and insightful job of answering the question affirmatively. To summarize, Scott demonstrates several key points: First, monotheism represented a major advance in culture, civilization, ethics, and lawfulness. Prior to monotheism - which was Judaism's gift to the world via Abraham - the world was characterized by lawlessness.
To the extent other codes of law existed, they served primarily to empower dictators. Second, the real enemy of society is idolatry. Four millennia ago, idolatry was, literally, the "false god" that Abraham sought to replace. The gods of that age were really idols that enabled rulers to justify their abuse of power. Third, we should separate optics from reality. While it is true that people have committed heinous crimes in the name of religion, it is neither fair not accurate to lay those crimes at the foot of monotheism.

Further, while some have criticized religion for justifying capital punishment, in fact the Torah served to limit the cases in which capital punishment could be applied. And in practice, as reflected in commentaries in the Mishnah, these applications were extremely rare.

In sum, the monotheism that Abraham delivered to the world was unique in that it sought to advance justice for all, and not power for the rulers. This idea remains as radical, transformative, and important today as it was four millennia ago. Kudos to Scott for a powerful book! One person found this helpful. I strongly encourage you to read this book! Written through the lens of a brilliant and accomplished Wall Street investment banker, Scott invites several gifted religious leaders of Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths to the conversation who offer context and perspective to some of the most challenging claims against the Bible and religion.
The research component of this book is so thorough and exhaustive. It could be used as a university textbook but not in an overwhelming sense where a casual, interested reader loses key messages in the details. It comes at a very important time in our history when our values, beliefs, and faith traditions are being tested and compromised by modern day idolatry. Scott Shay masterfully weaves all of them and so much more together in a brilliant, accessible, and inspiring new book, "In Good Faith.
He successfully demonstrates the compatibility of faith and reason and the revolutionary break with the past which the Bible represents. His insightful interpretation of "idolatry" is an important and unique contribution to understand the Bible, Biblical history and subsequent efforts to develop a moral, just and free society. Believers, agnostics, and atheists alike be engaged, challenged, educated and even entertained!
What I liked is the arguments presented for the value of prayer and faith in a world in which science has opened the human vista to great promise. The author is a modern orthodox Jew, a self-made successful banker, and a man of great intellect.
He has shown why monotheism is a morally reasonable, and preferable, answer to the new atheism, which the author explains, cogently, is the modern mutation of traditional idolatry that was the counter point to Biblical monotheism in the first place. He embraces science, quantum theory, relativity, and the new miracles of molecular genetics, while shedding light on the error of the new atheists' pessimistic conclusions about man's present condition as expressed by Dawkins, Harari, et al.
This book is worth reading because it is a reasoned response to the propositions made by the new anti-theo- logians who do not understand the negative consequences of their own conclusions.
