You can read each booklet in couple of hours. I'm using them to supplement other studies. Jul 27, Aaron Ventura rated it really liked it. I enjoyed this book by Justin Holcomb and found it to be a well-rounded and refreshing introduction to the relevant history surrounding some of the major creeds, confessions and catechisms.

There are good discussion questions at the end of each chapter making it perfect for a small group book study. Readable, clear descriptions of all the major ecumenical church councils and most of the major creeds, confessions and catechisms. Explains in an easy to follow manner the history, motive and results of each, and their enduring relevance for believers today. Apr 03, Chad Duke rated it really liked it.

This book is really clear and basic for people wanting to know more about the Church. I think he did a great job in giving the relevance of each section and some questions to help us think about certain things. Apr 21, Christopher Davis rated it it was amazing. This is certainly an excellent overview of the historic creeds of the church. Objective and useful regardless of denominational affiliation. A great start I g point for church history.

Understanding the history of the church is an important element of the faith.

Digging into the past, while for many is often viewed in a negative light as being dull and boring especially when it comes to reading about church councils and creeds, is nonetheless vital.

Its importance resides in the need to have a firm grasp on what it is we believe, how such beliefs were developed throughout church history, the issues that were being dealt with by the various church councils and the subsequent establishment of the creeds, and how all that applies to our lives today. Justin Holcomb in his book Know the Creeds and Councils which is part of the continuing Know series from Zondervan, provides the reader with a helpful primer that brings to life these important aspects of church history. I will readily admit that during Bible College and Seminary, church history classes were not my favorites.

While the events of history were interesting, I often wanted to move forward to the study of more theologically related matters. As these heresies of the past were addressed, it forced the church to solidify her stance on a number of key theological issues, the very issues I wanted to move forward to study. It was those earnest efforts of men of God who were leading the church in the past that continues to influence how the firm foundation of theological truth we stand upon today.

Holcomb engages seven different church councils and six different creeds or statements of faith. Some of these councils and creeds are more well known that others but all are important to study and understand. His intent is not to provide an exhaustive excursus into every single element of these councils and creeds.

Conversely, his goal is to help familiarize believers with the overarching intent of the councils, the issues they addressed, why the councils were important, and their lasting impact on us today. Additionally, his goal with the creeds he discusses is also not to dive into every nuance of theology them address but rather to help the reader understand why they were created and as with the councils, why they continue to have relevance for us today. Because we sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that Jesus is spiritual and far removed from us, it can be comforting to remember that he is really human.

In fact, many believed the definitions established at Chalcedon were too Nestorian in nature and others felt the issue of whether Christ had one or two wills was left unanswered. The confession puts its heart into making the implications of this theology understandable rather than repeating a set of ideas. It is highly accessible, historical in approach without getting too far into the weeds of the events that took place, and most importantly it helps the reader gain a solid connection and appreciation for these councils and creeds, driving home again and again why these events and statements of faith remain important elements of the faith.

I highly recommend this book for all believers for it is a valuable reference tool for understanding the creeds and councils. Apr 26, Phillip Howell rated it it was amazing. This book is a great introduction and overview of Christian church history. Apr 18, Greg Bailey rated it liked it. A brief but useful introduction to the major creedal documents and church councils of history. Mar 12, Becky rated it it was amazing Shelves: This isn't the first book I've read on the subject of church history, though I wish it had been! The book I read was thick, scholarly, and in my opinion, poorly organized.

In the introduction, he defines the four key terms used throughout the book: He shares his purpose for writing the book: It is an introduction to some of the most important theological declarations in the Christian tradition. At the end of each chapter are discussion questions and recommended reading for further study. The definitions he gives are straight forward. For example, this is how he defines the term catechism: The Apostles' Creed ca.

Council of Nicaea and the Nicene Creed Chapter 3: Councils of Ephesus , , Chapter 4: Council of Chalcedon Chapter 5: Athanasian Creed Late s to Early s Chapter 6: Councils of Constantinople , , Chapter 7: Councils of Carthage and Orage and Chapter 8: Council of Trent Chapter 9: Heidelberg Catechism Chapter Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion Chapter Westminster Confession of Faith Chapter Second Vatican Council Chapter He is fair, kind, respectful, of course, and the goal is never to persuade readers to believe exactly what he believes.

But he provides a solid grounding for understanding Christian doctrines. One feels that he is a true tour guide: He can tell you where to watch your step, where to be careful. And along the way, he can share interesting facts. Let's play Did You Know! If Christ were not fully human, or if he were not fully divine, he would not be able to serve as our mediator — as the God-man. He would be either just another man or God himself. The reforms included correcting abuses of power by the clergy, clarifying the balance of authority between Scripture and church tradition, and issuing official statements on justification, the sacraments, and purgatory.

Intended to set the doctrinal standards for the Church of England, it became a powerful force in the Church of Scotland and has influenced Presbyterian churches all over the world. Centuries later, numerous churches and denominations worldwide look to the Westminster Confession as their standard of doctrine, subordinate, of course, to Scripture" While I would not want to be quizzed on what I remember from the book several weeks later, I do feel it was a helpful read overall.

Oct 10, Jerry rated it really liked it Shelves: An excellent summary of major creeds and councils. Holcomb is weak on Trent and what it means, which I think is probably his Episcopalian showing. Dec 30, David Haines rated it really liked it. A great little introduction to the creeds and councils, throughout the history of the church.

A great primer for the subject. Holcomb does a great job of summarizing the various creeds, confessions, catechisms, and councils of the Christian church from the 's to the 's. He explains the background that brought about each new doctrinal summation, and explains why it was necessary to add to or clarify a previous doctrine.

Whether it was false teachers or divisions in the church, the need to explain doctrine more clearly arose repeatedly. Know the Creeds and Councils

Knowing our history helps us avoid mistakes that others have made. Unfortunately, many churches today are not digging in deep to their doctrine, and their people are left adrift, swayed by every half-baked idea or fad that rolls around. That brings me to the relevance of studying these old texts in our modern world. I thought he really showed the relevance of even the more obscure debates by explaining how each side's view would affect our beliefs and how that in turn would affect our actions.

It's a good reminder that theological differences rarely come about through all-out maliciousness, but often through well-meaning, but incorrect, interpretation. Therefore, we should defend the truth firmly, but still with love and respect for our opposing brother. I would heartily recommend this book for individuals or small-group study. In fact, at around small pages per chapter, with a list of additional reading and discussion questions at the end of each chapter, and ample endnotes for further research, this is ideally set up for a weekly type study with homework assignments.

Because the subject matter is on the core doctrines of the faith, it really is suitable for both adult and youth study. Holcomb sums up the reason for the book well when he writes, "Learning how Christians throughout history have wrestled with the tough questions of our faith gives us a valuable perspective that deepens our understanding of the Christian faith, increases our dependence on God's revelation in Jesus Christ and Holy Scriptures, fuels our worship of God, increases our love for each other, and motivates mission to the world.

Oct 22, George P. His choices regarding what to include and exclude will not please all readers, however. Nonetheless, they leave readers with a hole in their understanding of historic Protestantism. Regardless, I think this volume is a worthwhile read. American evangelicals, as religious populists, often have historically thing understandings of Christian doctrine.

He explains the development of key Christian doctrines and shows how doctrinal considerations are relevant to life. This book is perfect for use in Sunday school classes, small groups, book clubs, and individual self-study. Dec 30, Hopson rated it really liked it. This is a fantastic little book on notable creeds, councils, confessions, and catechisms from church history. With short, clear chapters in simple English, this is an accessible book for all readers. Highly recommend this one! May 21, Ho Christopher rated it really liked it. Why were they created? These and many other related questions would be answered by Holcomb in this book.

Holcomb first defines the various terms used in this book, creeds, confessions and catechism. Following which these are then presented in a chronological order, allowing the readers to see how the creeds have developed, deepen and also modified in their wording to be more specific to the various challenges that arose at the different eras. What is interesting is that Holcomb not only includes Protestant creeds and confession, in this book you can also read about the Romans Catholic Creeds and Councils, and Holcomb does not skimp on the explanation about them.

Lastly, under relevance, Holcomb is perceptive about the importance of creeds and confessions and the need for Christians to be familiar with the them. Even when discussing about the Vatican II, Holcomb is still able to draw relevant application for Christians and thus gives excellence support for the Christian to be well versed in them. Although this might be a little too overbearing, but I would have wished that Holcomb could have added a chapter on the Second London Baptist Confession. Still this trivial lack has not in any way made the book any less valuable.

This remains to be an excellent and informative guide for any Christian who wants to be informed in this area. This wonderful, short book very effectively communicates the information.

A layman--even a teenager--can understand the issues being discussed and why they were and are important. The author did an excellent job at defining and continuing to define theological words and explaining complex theological issues in an understandable way. I think this would be a great study for high school- or c "Know the Creeds and Councils" is a summary of the historical discussions around what Christians believe. I think this would be a great study for high school- or college-age church groups. The author moved through history, from the first known creed "I believe He doesn't cover every council, but he picked important ones that give an idea of the discussions going on at the time and how they were resolved.

He explained the main issues being discussed, why it was an issue, what statements of belief came from the meeting, and why it's relevant to us today. He also included some discussion questions at the end of each chapter. I'd recommend this resource to those interested in knowing more about the history behind certain doctrinal statements, especially those people intimidated by "theology" or "doctrine" books.

This book doesn't cover the Scriptural basis for the various beliefs, which probably should be studied first so you know why you believe what you believe. I received this book as a review copy from the publisher through BookLook. May 21, Melanie rated it it was amazing Shelves: Review on my blog:
