Princess Ildiko is seen by the Kai people as horribly ugly as her light eyes and skin make her as scary as a ghost. Ildiko and Brishen are unusually tolerant of each others culture while being repulsed by each others food etc. The couple make a deal to be nice to each other despite their differences. And it works wonderfully, so much so that I think 'be nice to each other' should be added to all marriage vows. In 'Radiance' the couple's agreement results in a loyal friendship and then keeps evolving into something more.
The cultural differences are key to this lovely book, but there is also adventure and a touching romance. I enjoyed the humour too as Ildiko uses her 'scary ghost' looks to tease her Kai companions. But for me the most enjoyment came from the wonderful imagining of a totally believable world. This is my first time reading anything by Grace Draven - it won't be my last. What an intriguing tale, lovely and gentle at times, tense and dramatic at others. I have certainly been taken in by the main characters of Brishen and Ildiko, loved they way they came together and how their relationship grew.
I also really like some of the secondary characters as well, always good when an author can create other interesting characters. I look forward to reading on and discovering what evil has just been unleashed. I really enjoyed this story. I loved the arranged marriage between the H and h. It was a well developed and constructed friendship into love story. It was plausible and the world around was lush and rich with intrigue. I loved getting to know the characters. Ildiko and Brishen were so different, but resigned to their fates. I loved the first meeting of each other. The gradual affection between friends and then lovers.
I loved how the author described their differences. Brishen was creeped out by Ildiko's eyes. Yet Ildiko had a difficult time reading Brishen's expressions, because his eyes were so unlike a 'humans'. It was a fantastic read and I cannot wait to read the second instalment in this series. Riley is involved in a car crash with her mother, who dies, and now has the gift of seeing spirits. Her father moves them to Scotland from Portland for a change of scenery and she encounters lots of spirits - good and bad - even getting her instalove happening with one of them. And at times laughable. Apr 04, Nadine X rated it really liked it. A pleasant surprise, this book restored my faith in the YA genre. I had all but given up hope.
A girl named Riley loses her mom, and her family moves to Scotland, where she encounters a few ghosts. One of them is named Ian, and she falls in love with him. There's a problem though. Another girl likes Ian too, and she just so happens to be dead and very dangerous. This could have been a cheesy 'Twilight-like' story about a loner being romanced and stalked by a supernatural being, and some times it A pleasant surprise, this book restored my faith in the YA genre.
This could have been a cheesy 'Twilight-like' story about a loner being romanced and stalked by a supernatural being, and some times it did come dangerously close to that. But it's also written much more realistically than 'Twilight', and the protagonist is less of a Mary Sue type.
What I liked about this book in particular is that it was a real page turner. The author didn't go too introspective. There was lots of suspense, drama, and a bit of old-school horror. I like the way the author writes. Much more realistic, and simplistic with very little purple prose. Sometimes the writing was a bit too simple though. The romance between Riley and Ian is sweet, but I didn't quite buy it. There's not enough of a build-up, IMO, and so you don't quite feel the same way as Riley does when things start to happen between them. But it's plausible enough, and the twist at the end was kinda awesome.
I'm really glad to see she wrote a few more stories in this world because this is definitely strong enough to turn into a series. The Deepest Cut is an amazingly beautiful love story. The tenderness Templeton shows between Riley and Ian made my heart fall in love with them.
Riley and Ian's love had me crying, hoping, and longing that they would find a way to be together. Templeton has a gift for writing heart-melting love. Riley and Ian broke my heart with their love that could never be. Riley lost her mother in a car crash, and Riley feels responsible for her mom's death. The gui The Deepest Cut is an amazingly beautiful love story.
The guilt is too much for Riley to carry, so she finds a way to let the pain out. But the way Riley has chosen to deal with pain is a secret that she has to hide. Riley and Ian find strength in each other.
Riley never thought that her best friend and the love of her life would be a ghost. And because of her gift, she knows she the only one that can end Ian's curse and he finally crosses over. This will become Riley's deepest pain, letting go of a love she knows she will never have again. Riley and Ian's love will make you feel every tender moment between them. Every heart break, but also the power of love that can heal the deepest cut.
I highly recommend The Deepest Cut as a must read and I love the beautiful cover.
That wouldn't have mattered, if at least one of the characters were likeable, deep, realistic Despite all, I still wanted to get to the end, because sometimes a great ending can convert an Ok story in a good one, right? This wasn't the case, the end was unoriginal. Not even the romance kept me interested enough, Riley and Ian fell in love practically in 3 minutes and without apparent reason. Dec 17, Lucy marked it as did-not-finish. Every time I attempted to get any further in this book my brain threatened to cease functioning.
The writing is exceedingly choppy and unfocused. The plot is about as unimaginative as one can get. I don't like any of the other characters enough to force myself further. View all 89 comments. Jun 29, Jodi rated it did not like it Shelves: I am glad this book was free. I was really hoping for a creepy, scary ghost story.
This is partly my fault, I didn't read the description of the book before I read it. I just looked at the title, the cover and comments from others about freaky ghost stories. It would be very traumatic to lose your mom at such a young age and to actually be there when it happened would be worse. I can't imagine losing my mom ever but especially so young. Her dad movin I am glad this book was free. Her dad moving her and her brother around the world would also be traumatic.
That would be so hard to leave her home and really leave her mom because that is where all of her memories of her mom are. Part of the story was that Riley was supposed to deal with all of her pain, anger and grief through cutting. I feel like the author really didn't explore this aspect of the story. I think she only cut herself once and then scratched her legs once with her finger nails. The author did talk about her compulsion to cut and she almost cut a couple of times but I think that should have been explored further.
There are many people who cut and really could have related to that part in Riles. I feel like I am too old to read and appreciate this book.
Wraith (Wraith, #1) by Angel Lawson
I like many YA books but ones that are more mature and complex than this one. I found myself rolling my eyes at the events in this story. I love the paranormal and am very interested in the spiritual world. I do believe that there are people who can communicate with spirits and was looking forward to that part of the book.
How to write a modern ghost story
When I realized that Riley was going to fall in love with her ghost, Ian, I knew it wasn't going to be the book for me. Johan, a real guy who showed an interest in Riley, turned out to be the stereotypical good looking scum bag who loses interest in girls when he gets what he wants, which then gave Riley the freedom to continue to fall for her ghost. Riley was so torn about helping her ghost love to break the curse that was trapping him to Earth. She wanted to help him but wanted him to stay with her.
When he did move on, Riley discovered that his relative, who had been away on holidays the whole summer, looked exactly like Ian right down to his eyelashes and dimples. Coincidentally, the first time she meets his relative, he is just as enamoured with Riley and they hold hands and drive off together. View all 3 comments. Jan 12, Book Whales rated it really liked it. Originally posted Book Whales What will do if you love someone you can't have? Would you fight for it? Wow, no words can really describe this book. This book is spectacular!.
It was well executed and the story is believable. The author did a good job in describing the inn, castle, cemetery and the history of the MacKinnon's. I was deeply engrossed in the world she made, Scotland is the perfect place for this. The characters are realistic. I connected to Riley instantly. I felt her pain and emotions. She was so real to me, I got too attached to this heroine. I also like how strong she was, the way she handled her gift.
I don't want to put myself in her shoes. The gripping and nail-biting scenarios the author made was too much for me. I fell in love with Ian.
Though I sympathize with him, he was forced to roam his land for centuries, because of a curse. The dramas, parties, gossips and the BOYS are so real and close to reality. I can't get enough of this book. It was creepy and a breathe of fresh air at the same time. I literally read this book with my lights on, that's how scary this book is.
The Deepest Cut
Overall, I would recommend this book to people who loves horror, ghosts, romance and action. This book is a whole package. The only thing that I don't like about this book is the ending, it was a cliffhanger!! Good thing I came upon this book a day before book 2!
Dec 13, Rachel Naddeo rated it it was amazing. I don't know if you read this series but the story in Mediator is really similar, but the outcome totally different. And I must say I loved the difference! This book should totally get more attention, since it definitely made my list of best books this year.
It's not like other books in which the romance is so obvious and going to end well no matter the obstacles in the way. The Deepest Cut has everything you want in a book: It will make you deriously addicted to it and you will probably be up all night like me reading it! Jan 17, Husnaa rated it it was amazing Shelves: O This so requires a sequel! And I need it asap! The girl falls in love with the guy ghost even tho it can't be cause he's already dead but the whole Kade thing was a really awesome thinG! This way I don't feel so heartbroken about Ian.
I felt really sorry for Riley, her mom dies then she can see ghosts. That could suck for anyone: I started my OMG!!

I started my book year with a really great amazing book! I just realised there IS a sequel that is out right now. I have to stop reading books unless I know the entire series is finished. Cause when you end a good book with a cliffhanger So yeah, I really enjoyed it.
Got so caught up in the ending, forgot how much I didn't like the corporealness of the ghost with all the hugging and kissing I couldn't change my view from ghosts being untouchable, and so it was distracting So thi Grumble grumble So this was mostly a problem on my end.
A bit scary if you ask me. Heres the thing, I like suspense and mystery, but not horror and even though I would not classify this book as a Horror book, it was still more scary than my comfort level. I also dont watch scary movies and freely admit to being a big baby about this so I wouldn't be surprised to find no one else was scarred when reading this. However, the book itself was very good and easily kept my attention the entire time. It was very esy to fall into and I enjoyed it.
Give it a go A bit scary if you ask me. Give it a go if you're not a pansy like me ; Nov 06, SheLove2Read rated it it was amazing Shelves: All I can say is WOW! I had a terrible time putting this one down. More of a mystery than a romance but there was a definite romantic but clean element to the story. The heroine you just instantly connected with and felt her pain. The story was fascinating and the creepy elements were downright horror movie scary.
There is an HEA but it's left open ended with a bit of a twist. You won't be disappointed and I cannot wait for the sequel! Oct 24, Alyssa Ivy rated it it was amazing. One test of a really good book is whether you feel like you know the narrator by the end.

Take Riley and mix her with some other fantastic characters, a descriptive setting and a wonderful intensity and you get an amazing result. I am excited to see where the series goes next. Jun 30, Stacia the club marked it as to-read. View all 11 comments. I picked up The deepest cut because the cover caught my attention. Then I read the synopsis and I decided to buy it. It wasn't what I was expecting. First I don't like when ghosts go all solid because they need to make out with your resident good girl turned medium, who happens to be the only person who can see them. Same thing happened with Apparition and La promessa: I do miss the old ghosts who used to stay incorporeal Th I picked up The deepest cut because the cover caught my attention.
There's a redeeming quality in Templeton's ghosts, though: And they disappear because they run out of energy. But why can they read minds? Since when can ghosts do it? Another thing I disliked about this book was the insta-love. It took Riley and Ian 2,8 seconds to fall madly in love with each other. And it took 0,4 for Riley to decide to do whatever it takes to help Ian crossing over. It all was so rushed. In addition, it seems that Riley was the only good girl in the book. Laria was a psychopath. Cassandra was just mean.
Megan was spineless and a blatter-mouth. Without even mentioning the nameless girls throwing themselves at Johan. OK, I haven't read something about a cutter in ages. The last thing being a manga, if I remember correctly, and I disliked it very much. Anyway, what does the cutting add to the story? And why is Riley so surprised when she feels the impulse to cut even if she's decided to stop with it?
See a Problem?
It is an impulse-control behavior problem: And I'm pretty sure that it doesn't disappear just because one meets the love of her life. Some other reviews said that this book scared them very much. I wasn't scared at all. Not by the scene in the cemetery, not my Laria's attempt at frightening Riley. No strong emotions whatsoever. Laria is not scary: And what about view spoiler [Ian's descendant? At the end of the book, when Ian's been freed from his curse, Riley meets his great great great great grandchild, who is obviously identical to Ian. And there are already sparks between Riley and this grandchild.
Like three seconds after she kissed Ian and helped him cross over. Aug 13, Farah rated it liked it. Ian, a spirit, is one of the main characters and has the ability to make you fall in love with him. Ian has a way of capturing your heart and twisting it to his desire. Ian was murdered and was cursed to become an earthbound spirit because of a girl named Laria. Laria seriously has some deep issues that need to be taken care of. Her obsession with Ian is beyond comprehendible. Ian came from a wealthy family and obviously had no intentions of associating himself with a lower class member.
Laria would become envious of other women who came to meet with Ian. At one point she became so jealous, she murdered and cursed him for all eternity. You seriously cannot trust these hoes. My favorite moment of fear had to be when Riley was in the bathroom looking at herself in the mirror and Laria began to mold in her shape and reveal herself. This scene sent a chill up my spine because it resembles a fear we all keep in the back of our minds when entering a bathroom. Overall, this story was something different than my usual Sci-fi readings.

I firmly believe in tying up narrative strands, so while every human story must be followed to its conclusion, the reader must be left plot-satisfied but intentionally uneasy, the paranormal at play in the margins. If visions and voices are rationally explained, it's not a ghost story; if they're not, incredulity can set in. And again, Freud's influence can muffle the shivers: The conventions of traditional ghost stories are there to play with, and, for the modern writer, there is pleasure to be had in hidden rooms, with resistant houses and barely heard sounds.
Tropes can be ignored or upended, and chilling child patterings and mysterious stains are an enticing part of what Henry James called "the strange and sinister embroidered on the very type of the normal and easy". This is an era conversant with extreme horror and increasingly successful crime genres, with console games that scatter images of blood on the screen. Yet we still seem to desire less definable hauntings in the form of the gothic, vampiric and ghostly.
France leads the way, with its hit supernatural series Les Revenants , while ghost writer Marc Levy is now the most read living French writer in the world. Above all, ghost writing is about atmosphere. The mood and resonance, the sounds, scents and tense awareness that here is a place where anything could happen.
