Long time friends are there to celebrate and before they begin their dinner Ellen Desiree's favorite and only niece and Mike Ellen's significant other are there for family dinners. Jackie Desiree's secretary aka boss murphy is there for Desiree even when she's not needed.
All of these usual set of characters offer encouragement as Desiree brings them up to date with how the manuscript is coming along and if she's getting any closer to solving this mystery. Then Desiree goes out to lunch at one of her favorite restaurants with one of her favorite waiters Felix is not his usual cheerful self, in fact he's ready to serve Desiree a completely different meal then the one he's been serving her since day one. Both moving closer together at a steady pace How will this dilemna be solved or can they even continue in their relationship? It was more than a fantastic cozy I did not know who done it until the very end. A Desiree Shapiro ending like no other. The author went beyond the pale and then some. Selma Eichler is one of my favorite authors.
She is overweight, late middle aged and has "gloriously hennaed" red hair. She is bossed around by her secretary. She is every inch a New Yorker. It is hard not to like her. This book is different from her other books in that it is a puzzle within a puzzle. Yes, I did figure out who the killer was, even without the puzzle clues, but the book is, as always, a good read.
I like the fact that the protagonist seems so real with strengths and weaknesses. She could be your next door neighbor if you lived in a New York apartment. A different type of who-dun-it and with an unusual P. Funny and entertaining at the same time. I good light read. Love Desiree and this was a good one.
Anyone with a sense of humor would enjoy this story. Story takes funny twists and turns. Murder Can Crash Your Party is the first Selma Eichler novel I've read, actually, and it was so enjoyable that I'll undoubtedly get to her other novels sitting on my bookshelves sooner than I'd originally planned so I can get me some more of the thoroughly delightful, not-at-all-what-one-would-expect PI, Desiree Shapiro.

Honestly, this book rates right up there with the very best I've read so far in , due, in large measure, to Ms. Eichler's very likable, indomitable, real-life, less-than-perfect, girl-next-door heroine. In this particular outing, Ms. Eichler uses an interesting plot technique to drive the story - a mystery within a mystery, if you will.
Murder Can Crash Your Party (Desiree Shapiro, book 15) by Selma Eichler
I found it exceedingly effective at building and releasing tension throughout the entire book. Desiree is invited to speak at a mystery writer's conference and afterwards is approached by a romance novelist with a strange but intriguing challenge - one that Desiree accepts readily. While Desiree is involved in a few small distractions throughout the book - reminding us that she is, in fact, a real fictional PI with a real fictional life - the main story revolves around a manuscript of a murder mystery written by the somewhat eccentric romance novelist and the challenge said novelist presents.
This book has it all: I don't know how I managed to miss this series all these years, but I plan to make up for lost time by getting my hands on as many of the Desiree Shapiro books as I can! I will avoid this author like the plague in the future. This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author. This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up. I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Aug 01, Rhea rated it liked it. I found this book to be just OK. I would have stopped reading it early on but I hate doing that.
I have to know the ending. I found the synopsis to be misleading as well. Also, I'm sure there are people out there that are fans of Desiree's but I think the author goes a bit too over board in emphasizing the fact that Desiree is over weight and in my opinion very lazy. What kind of a P. She also talks herself out of good decisions. Anyway, I don't see me reading a I found this book to be just OK. Anyway, I don't see me reading any more of this series.

Jan 19, Susan rated it liked it Shelves: Private investigator Desiree Shapiro has a peculiar assignment--a well-known romance author asks her to read her first attempt at a mystery novel, and find the solution, in return for a large fee. Much of the novel, describing a murder at a birthday party, is excerpted or summarized in this book, and Desiree tries to figure out the clues as she deals with her real life: Jan 14, Kathleen Meacham rated it liked it. This series is such a cozy, and I have enjoyed reading all 15 of them. Unfortunately, Selma Eichler has determined that she is not going to continue on with it.
Although I respect that, it appears the decision to stop was made after this 15th installment was written. There is no closure to the series and that really bums me out. Yes, of course I would be saddened if the series was all wrapped up and came to end, but I am really saddened to be left hanging. May 16, Nathalie S rated it it was amazing. I became acquainted with New York P. Desiree Shapiro many years ago.
But then I lost touch because I forgot both the name of the author and of her heroine, but I was very happy to find hidden somewhere the list I had made of favorite authors at the Provo Library! And Desiree is still just as endearing as ever! Apr 26, Linda rated it liked it Shelves: I really liked the premise of this story but I didn't like the writing story of the novel manuscript with in this story. Also just have some trouble believing the relationship between Desiree and Nick but I love the other characters.
