In the episode Elementary, Dear Data , Data , after memorising all of the Sherlock Holmes books, is challenged to use deduction in an original mystery created by Dr.
However, the programme goes awry when Geordi La Forge , in response to Pulaski's challenge, asks the computer to create an adversary capable of defeating Data , resulting in the hologram of Professor Moriarty played by Daniel Davis gaining full sentience, kidnapping Dr. Pulaski and taking over the ship's computer. In a later episode, Ship in a Bottle , the holodeck Moriarty again takes control of the ship, insisting that a way be found for him to experience life beyond the confines of the holodeck, until the crew manage to trap him in a permanent simulation.
The first Holmes-based episode was produced with the understanding that Sherlock Holmes was public domain , but a protest from the Doyle estate indicated otherwise and, it is rumoured, prevented a plan for Data-as-Holmes to become a recurring character. An elderly Holmes and Watson appear in a sketch of comedy show That Mitchell and Webb Look , where Holmes is portrayed as an increasingly senile old man whose flawed deductions are merely humoured by Watson to try to make his old friend feel better; the sketch ends on a tearful note as Holmes, his mind briefly clear, admits to Watson that he knows that his powers are failing him but simply cannot think clearly enough to get past his age.

Julian Symons created a character named Sheridan Haynes, an actor immersed in the role of Holmes for an epic project to adapt the entire canon for television almost ten years before Jeremy Brett took up a similar challenge , in the novel A Three Pipe Problem. Haynes finds himself confusing his own identity with Holmes', and becomes involved in a mystery.
The character returned for a sequel, The Kentish Manor Murders , and Symons also wrote a Holmes short story pastiche. The story takes place during World War II , and features the Holmes character investigating the appearance of a mute boy with a parrot who repeatedly calls a string of seemingly random numbers in German. Charles Hamilton under the pseudonym Peter Todd wrote almost short parodies of the Holmes short stories from onwards. The characters became Herlock Sholmes and Dr Jotson, living in a Shaker Street apartment; and the sophisticated deductive reasoning of the original became absurdity in the spoofs, which were mainly published in a range of boys' comics of the period The Greyfriars Herald, The Magnet, The Gem , etc.

Additionally, the Bengali writer Saradindu Bandyopadhyay also had a detective named Byomkesh Bakshi , which had some resemblance to Doyle's Holmes. However both used deductions and were astute observers. In their character portrayal though the biggest difference lies. If it was intended to be so, maybe it could have used a different title, as Sherlock didn't seem to have spent a lot of time in Japan content-wise.
Most importantly, I think this book has the capability of making a reader out of someone who is not. And that's saying something! Jan 01, Abhinav rated it it was amazing Shelves: Despite my apprehension that the author would not do justice to Doyle as Watson, my suspicions were lifted credibly after reading the initial few pages of the book. Murthy's complete involvement as Watson and his infallible language skills makes the reader even suspect if the book was even written by Doyle or Murthy himself!
Watson's storytelling skills and his nonchalance are all reflected in the book. Murthy's thorough research on various historical events and his ability to weave them into the story with no heavy distractions to the actual plot is appreciable.
To an Asian and most importantly an Indian reader of this work, this book is sure to satisfy the long held desire of Holmes and Watson working together in the sub-continent. No wonder this final point may have made me inclined to write a positive review! The plot is thrilling and ensures the common reader to not put the book down without any credible reason. A recommended must-read for all those interested in the Holmesian literature. I thank NetGalley for a review ecopy of this book. Akira Yamashita's book encapsulates all that is Sherlock - class, mystery, intrigue and drama. The storyline is riveting and the book is 'unputdownable'. I love the use of Haiku given the Japanese setting. The facts and the description of the events and locations and characterisations are simply brilliant. A must read for Sherlock fans and others too. I didn't like this book much at all.
I can't even keep count of the many times I start to fall asleep while reading it, so for me it was pretty boring. If it wasn't that the book worked for a challenge I was doing I wouldn't have finished it. The one thing I did like was the way the author captured the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. I thought it was well done and very authentic. I won't be recommending this book. As an ardent fan of Sherlock Holmes I found this one to be a captivating read.
I was hesitant to buy the book at first but the caption drew my attention. Portrayal of the characters I really loved the letter Watson wrote about the editor. Though it was predictable in few parts, i got to hand it to Vasudevmurthy for giving us such a wonderful story and bringing Sherlock Holmes back again in our lives: Good language Love the sections with the conversations As always the famous disguises The letters laced with sarcasm Overall- decent read, not WOWed, but did not abandon the book! History , travel, adventure , intrigue ,love , passion, revenge and ultimately a spectacular display of Holme's wit and analysis.
Sep 10, Megan rated it liked it Shelves: Japan pays all due homage to its source material, taking care not to disturb any canonical timelines, and putting forth a reasonable enough account of what Holmes might have been up to during his presumed death. From the title, I really wasn't expecting much Watson, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that he was the primary narrator.
His voice is nearly pitch-perfect, and he and Holmes stay reasonably in character Holmes struck me as a tad overly open-mi Sherlock Holmes, The Missing Years: His voice is nearly pitch-perfect, and he and Holmes stay reasonably in character Holmes struck me as a tad overly open-minded towards the various Asian cultures featured, but then, Watson was a stodgy enough Englishman for both of them. The title and cover would lead most readers to assume that most of the book takes place in Japan, but while the plot does center around that country, it's more of a road trip through South Asian countries, with India receiving just as much focus as Japan.
That's all perfectly in-line with the canon, of course, but not what I as a reader prefer to read. Unfortunately, a lot of the book reminded me of the reasons why, though the character of Sherlock Holmes interests me a lot, I haven't cared for the books since I was young. They're not "fair play whodunnits"; clues are freely withheld from the readers, contrived coincidences abound, and there's altogether too much disguises, assassins, etc.
Dyed-in-the-wool fans will probably appreciate this addition, but I think I'll stick to exercising the little grey cells. Another Holmes pastiche there are so many of them! My only issue is that I feel the author made Holmes a little crueller and Watson a little less intelligent and tolerant than they actually are in the Doyle canon, which spoiled the effect for me somewhat, but other than that it is certainly worth a look for the Japanese quotes and end story alone. Full review to come!

Nov 17, Philip Jones rated it really liked it. Nominally, it conforms to the events as told by Dr. In fact, most students of the Canon agree that the Doctor strayed fairly far from the truth in these tales. In this story, Sherlock is faced with a double threat. He discovers plans involving the Japanese Yakuza organized gangsters with certain Chinese Triads more organized gangsters and members of the Moriarty organization still more organized gangsters to flood Europe with narcotics and thus, to destabilize the economies of the dominant European States.
Secondly, these plans, whether successful or not, will, when made public, demean the already shaky view the world powers have of the ability of Japan to enter into serious relations with the dominant trading nations. This sequence of events is moderately improbable, but, by no means, impossible. The same is true for the basic premise of the tale and the events related. The author displays a solid knowledge of late Nineteenth Century Political History and a more than nodding acquaintance with many interesting characters of the times.
The tale is well-crafted and the characters are fascinating so it reads well and seems plausible. I enjoyed it and, with a few reservations, I heartily recommend it to readers. Murthy has a most reprehensible, low, sense of humor that crops up in the oddest places. Be careful, as it is apt to bite the reader in an unprotected spot without warning. Second, the author spouts split infinitives with enormous abandon. Finally, the author uses modern meanings of words that were assigned different meanings in Victorian times or even uses words not available in those times.
I am fortunate in that my own writings include a volume of hundreds of narrative Sherlockian puns, so I am already immunized against low and vulgar humor. Further, my habit of writing book reviews has served to give me a certain, jaded outlook towards improper English usage and I was able to control my actions in this case. I managed simply to un-split each infinitive as I encountered it, without condemning the writer for his perfidy.

The entire message is as follows: The envelop it arrived in also contains a first-class ticket aboard a merchant ship bound for Yokohama. Aboard the ship he encounters a deceptive bunch of characters. After eluding total disaster, the very much alive Holmes and Watson begin a globetrotting race against time to get critical information to the Emperor of Japan to avoid disastrous events that may result in war.

Murthy did an admirable job. The first half of the book was fabulous. It took me back to all of the original stories by Conan Doyle that I have read. The fast paced, smartly written, intriguing plotline had me turning pages to see what happened next. Then the plot seemed to deviate a bit by adding long letters from others around Holmes during the missing years. Watson received them to fill in information he did not have first-hand knowledge of.

The pace picked up a bit during the final chase and conclusion, but by then I was not as drawn to the plot as I was in the beginning. If you are a Holmes fan, by all means read this book. It is well written with a solid storyline. The characters are interesting and are not at all who they seem to be, much to my delight. John Watson can either be a fun homage to the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, or it can be a painful game of imitation that leaves readers cringing. This was the latter. For one thing, the timeline where this story is supposed to happen makes absolutely no sense. The plot takes place within those three years where Holmes was considered to be dead after fighting with Professor Moriarty, but it allows Watson and Holmes to meet again before the Writing a new novel starring Sherlock Holmes and Dr.
Considering how surprised Watson is in the original Doyle story of their reunion, this add-on leaves readers scratching their head. That blatant disregard for canon is not the worst thing that this novel has to offer, unfortunately. There are endless pages of exposition explaining how Holmes survived, which are laughably unrealistic. There is the fact that now apparently Moriarty survived Reichenbach, as well, making that entire Doyle story pointless.
Most of the characters, apart from Watson, speak like Holmes, including one man who uses the same detection skills as the famous detective.
The characters were pale copies of the originals and the plot was laughable. Although the book is marketed as seriocomic, it is neither serious nor comedic. This is not a good Sherlock Holmes story, as you have probably deduced by now, pun intended.

He is insulted to be receiving editorial advice from a woman and longs for the days when his work was published as is, without stylistic quibbling. To portray Watson in this way seems to me a disservice. The Missing Years is a novel of a journey. There are ports of call along the Indian coast, a train ride through the center of the continent, a journey on foot through Angkor Wat, then more time spent at sea. Many of the characters are not who they seem to be, which adds to the fun of the mystery. In all, this novel offers a promising start to a new series, a new incarnation of old friends beloved by readers everywhere.
