Mars One aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. Several unmanned missions will be completed, establishing a habitable settlement before carefully selected and trained crews will depart to Mars. Funding and implementing this plan will not be easy, it will be hard. The Mars One team, with its advisers and with established aerospace companies, will evaluate and mitigate risks and identify and overcome difficulties step by step. If we all work together, we can do this. Sending humans to Mars is a phenomenal undertaking by all standards and presents very real risks and challenges.
Establishing a permanent settlement is very complex, but it is far less complex and requires much less infrastructure sent to Mars than return missions.
Mars One has already started contracting established aerospace companies that will be able to develop the required systems. Hurrelle's rash actions and Lukrum's insistence to push forward as fast as possible in mining the Red Planet highlights one of the greatest challenges that we will likely face once we land humans on Mars — not repeating the mistakes we're making on Earth. Here on Earth, we are battling climate change and its severe and sometimes fatal consequences.
John Sonntag, a research and development scientist with NASA Goddard, takes viewers along with him in his real-life work in this final episode. Sonntag and his team fly over the Arctic to gather data on the state of the Arctic ice. And, as Sonntag explains in the episode, it is apparent just how quickly and drastically our planet is changing.
A buried lake on Mars excited and baffled scientists
The episode considers whether our journey to Mars will bring out the best in us and inspire humanity to do better. Just as the famous Earthrise photo showed humanity just how fragile and precious our home planet is, perhaps Mars might provide a similar inspiration.

- 'Mars' Finale Wraps Season 2 with Terror and Tragedy on the Red Planet!
The events of this season showcase how important it is for government and private space enterprise to work together while, at the same time, striking a balance that doesn't sacrifice life and exploration for profit. The finale draws to an emotional conclusion when the residents of Olympus Town finally see evidence that their years of terraforming efforts haven't been wasted. A lake of liquid water beneath the ice is the most likely explanation, Orosei says.
Tiny pockets of air in the polar ice sheet might explain the conflicting radar results, Orosei suspects. Smith thinks porous, Styrofoam-like ice sounds plausible, but hard to explain.
See NASA's InSight lander play the claw game on Mars - CNET
On Earth, ice normally packs tightly and becomes denser as it grows thicker. Porous ice might explain why it flows differently, and more dust and other impurities in the ice could make up for the difference in density. If the ice is porous, there should be more insulated lakes hidden beneath the ice cap, Orosei says. Finding additional lakes would be great news for the possibility of life there.

If life took root in the past, it could still hang on in these long-lived subglacial lakes, like life does in similar lakes in Antarctica SN: Radar evidence of subglacial liquid water on Mars. Mars probably has a lake of liquid water. Science News Online, July 27, Lake under Antarctic ice bursts with life.
