This is one of the first crime thrillers I've read - I'm not a fan of the genre. Many of the stories were captivating, with well depicted horrible crimes and motives. Some of the stories were hard to stick with, some had good twists, some were predictable. Oct 09, Johanne rated it really liked it. A good collection, some really cracking stories in here.

There were a few I skipped, as always in these anthologies some stories are less appealing.

The book focused on the countless theories that have been put forward with regard to the identity of the notorious Victorian serial killer and offered an extensive page section presenting all the known facts in the case. It included 30 essays written by the most famous, often controversial Ripperologists putting forward their own theories.

It remains one of the few titles to offer a series of alternative solutions to Jack the Ripper's identity and the truth behind the Whitechapel murders. But how many new theories and identities can researchers come up with? In this wonderful collection of brand-new stories, Jakubowski has compiled an extraordinary array of explorations into the identity of Jack the Ripper - this time unabashedly fictional, unrestrained by history and the known facts. The varied stories in this fantastic new collection continue this tradition with many possible identities put forward, some already suggested by historians, others more speculative, including famous names from history and fiction.

Even Sherlock Holmes is on the case! Sergeant Hamish Macbeth is alarmed to receive a report from a woman in the small village of Cronish in the Scottish Highlands. So when the same woman calls him back about an intruder, he simply marvels at her compulsion to lie. This time, though, she is telling the truth. Her body is found in her home and Hamish must sort through all of her lies to solve the crime. Praise for Death of a Valentine: Beaton fans will be delighted. Pulp fiction has been looked down on as a guilty pleasure, but it offers the perfect form of entertainment: In short, all the exhiliration of a roller-coaster ride.

It was in these luridly-coloured publications, printed on the cheapest pulp paper, that the first gems began to appear.

Capabilities

The one golden rule for writers of pulp fiction was to adhere to the art of storytelling. Each story had to have a beginning, an end, economically-etched characters, but plenty going on, both in terms of action and emotions. Pulp magazines were the TV of their day, plucking readers from drab lives and planting them firmly in thrilling make-believe, successors to the Victorian penny dreadfuls of writers such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens. These stories exemplify the best of crime and mystery pulp fiction - its zest, speed, rhythm, verve and commitment to straightforward storytelling - spanning seven decades of popular writing.

A pen pusher from Head Office soon finds himself pushing up the daisies Local police stations all over the Scottish Highlands are being threatened with closure and this presents the perfect opportunity for Detective Chief Inspector Blair, who would love nothing more than to get rid of Sergeant Hamish Macbeth. On hearing of Blair's plans Hamish is fully prepared to ensure young Cyril returns back to headquarters with a full report When amateur sleuth detective Kate Shackleton receives a dawn telephone call from her cousin James, his news soon snaps Kate into wakefulness. The India Office seek her on-the-spot help in finding a Maharajah, last seen on the Bolton Abbey estate. He has with him a hugely valuable diamond. Investigative successes and good family connections put Kate in the highly trusted category. Perceived as 'establishment', Kate feels an outsider in her sympathies.

One thing she is sure of: Qualities that she is sure will help her unravel the latest disappearance on that fateful summer's day. Despite its length, this short-form erotica from the world's leading writers remains inventive, provocative, sensual, and above all intelligent. These are sexual adventures to intrigue, shock, puzzle, and both scare and arouse. Mere titillation is never enough. A superb collection of the year's most outstanding short crime fiction published in the UK. Jakubowski has succeeded, as ever, in showcasing the impressive breadth of crime writing, from cosy tales of detection to noir mayhem and psychological suspense and terror.

There are puzzles to solve, nagging questions about the nature of the society in which we live, but, above all, there is an abundance of first-class entertainment. All three award-winning stories are included in this volume. Lee Child makes his debut and there is a first story from Neil Gaiman, too, in Sherlockian rather than fantastical mode.
