This book by a college professor of music is a bit more technical than I can understand, but nonetheless very interesting and fun to read while listening to songs and artists she is discussing.

I heard much more in listening to some of the tunes with earphones than I had noticed before, even though I may have heard the songs a dozen or more times. Will probably go back and continue to listen and read until t I've been a Western Swing fan for perhaps 45 years and have at least 3, recordings. Will probably go back and continue to listen and read until the library comes to take it away.
Although subtitled as "An Oral History," it's much more than that.
The "oral" part is wrapped in much document-based history and commentary. Her interviews with former Western Swing musicians, most of whom played with Bob Wills at some point, add a great deal to the history and contribute lots to her thesis that Western Swing really is a form of jazz, not country music.
