Throughout his extensive career he gained vast experience including service with the British Army of the Rhine, a spell with the US Army in Washington and assignments dealing with the integration of the work of the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force.
At the military science college, Shrivenham, Stuart initially studied aero-mechanical engineering, and later in his career became closely involved with equipment and procurement programmes, which involved a wide range of advanced technology.
