It's got the perfect combination of macabre and fantastical. The protagonist, a young boy, goes out into the world to gain knowledge. His master is a taxidermist who teaches him some magical, taxidermy tricks. Their experiments have the capacity to make trees grow feathers and birds grow leaves. Even though the story seems simple, it is very cerebral and ranks up there with the Part surreal fantasy, part children's fable - "The Adventures of Ingenious Alfanhui" remains one of my favorite books.
Even though the story seems simple, it is very cerebral and ranks up there with the best of the surrealist novels I've read. The imagery alone is enough to warrant a perusal of the novel. On his journey, he meets his grandmother who has her own trunk of secrets, magical secrets, to share with him. There are lots of archetypes I thought connected to the major arcana of the tarot, which was a nice little trick.
In a way, the character's journey mirrors perfectly the Fool's Journey of the tarot. This worked well for me - but it could just be because I love tarot so much. Advertised on the back as being as popular in the Spanish-speaking world as Harry Potter is in the English-speaking world, which is a really misleading comparison as most of these chapters are non-narrative prose poems. Reading "Kwaidan" and then seeing the movie adaptation helped me better appreciate weird meditative books like this because it's easier to imagine these little parcels of picture and language extracted into full set pieces and stories with their own internal drama.

Perhaps this is a forgotten magical masterpiece because its title so easily slips the mind. Its beauty is intangible, leaving alluring little memories of color, fire, and wandering. Ferlosio can sure do a lot with pages. Beyond that, though, this is a book that can be profitably read by anybody—except, perhaps, for very young, non-precocious children, ironically. If that sounds surreal, I can assure you that that description is far more straightforward than anything in the book itself. Reading this book is an absolute joy. There are short books that take hours to get through simply because the writing is so dense e. An intriguing thing about this book is that it contains hundreds of mini stories. After one has read the book through once, one can then open to any random chapter and enjoy it on its own.

The title of this book hooked my eyes several times at the library. After much deliberation, I finally checked the book out and certainly enjoyed the fantastical story of Alfanhui. I would forewarn anyone who needs fast-pacing and action to stay away from this novel.
It is a dream-like read that is more atmospheric and meditative than plot driven. The basic premise is that the story follows Alfanhui, a certainly ingenious young boy, who experiments with nature, with color.

It is a book meant to be eaten piecemeal and with time so that you may enjoy the travels and discoveries of Alfanhui as they unravel before you.
Feb 10, Cristina rated it it was ok. It's a masterpiece in relation with being one of the first fantastic realism novel, but personally i haven't enjoyed its reading so much. Maybe, the third part si that i've found more ilustrative. In that part you can better discover the nature references and the progress from the childhood to the adult age of the main character.
