But it was a risky business to do because crossing the continents at that time meant a perilous adventure fraught with hostile Indians, highwaymen, treacherous desert weathers and temperature, and other unforeseeable elements indicating danger.
This book by Mr. DiCerto tells the reader of historical and cultural backgrounds on which the birth of The Pony Express as a joint venture of William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B.
Waddel was founded against the odds, when the United States as a young nation in the world started to mark herself as a burgeoning western country with booming commerce and increasing population on a vast land in comparison with the European counterparts. During its operation, the service reduced the time for messages to travel between the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts to about 10 days. The author also provides us with personal accounts of the fearless young riders of the Express and their work routine, work conditions, and their interesting anecdotes, all of which are based upon veritable document records with pictures.
The book is never a bore with the scintillating discourse of the historical context smacking of wits and love of the subject matter by the author who, in fact, asserts that this book is his child out of a long labor of love and passion for this awesome enterprise in the American history. The Pony Express was hell on the horses and hell on the men. One has to wonder what was so important in those mail sacks called mochilas and specially designed for the Pony Express that so many lives had to be forfeited.
Ten days from Missouri to Sacramento was record breaking at that time. This is a great book for the history buff. The routes are mapped, the adventures detailed and the dangers described. The last chapter details why the Pony Express existed for such a short time. It was too expensive to be used by anyone other than government and business.
Telegraph lines would soon unite East and West, and a political scandal brought down William Russell one of the owners of the service.

But one still mourns the dead men and horses, and the buffalo corpses scattered over the plains. The West was a hard place to live; survival was never easy. I thought of old television westerns, and wondered how anyone could glamorize such a place and such a time.

Starting shortly before the Civil War erupted across the United States, the Pony Express connected the east and west by having riders deliver mail from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California, a route setup by previous explorations and a system of relay stations and waypoints. When working in perfect unison, the Pony Express dramatically cut down the time it took to travel to California, with the mail traveling nearly 1, miles to California just 10 days after the beginning of the journey in Missouri.
Naturally, the Pony Express also ran from west to east as well. At the same time, the Pony Express needed small riders to reduce the weight being carried by the horses; Mark Twain described the Pony Express riders he saw as "usually a little bit of a man. Joseph to Sacramento, riders would generally switch horses every 10 miles at a new stop, and riders traveled at all hours of the day, sometimes riding 20 straight hours to reach the destination on time. Riders typically traveled over 70 miles a day, working in tough conditions and not necessarily safe ones, given the fact that the routes forced them to contend with bandits and potentially hostile Native Americans nearby.
The most notable disruption came during the Paiute War, when members of the Paiute tribe attacked Pony Express outposts, but it would ultimately be technological advances that made the Pony Express obsolete. The advent of telegraph lines in the early s eventually made communication between east and west much faster, easier, and safe.
