And I have to admit I liked the bit of counterfeit-ticket karma delivered when he chose to bypass coming to Cleveland in order to stay in Chicago for a couple extra days. Of course, I write all this with jealousy that I have not taken a trip such as this. Nov 01, Roger Simmons rated it liked it. I got this book free from Goodreads. The opinions expressed in this review are mine and were not influenced by Goodreads or the Author. I read this book and I admit I like non-fiction.

It lets a reader almost be with the writer in his nefarious scalper hunting. The language is plain, easy to read and understandable. The way he presents his challenges is real life. It's what actually happens on the street. I hav I got this book free from Goodreads. I have to admit I learned alot about Scalping from his book that I didn't even know about but there was room to learn more.

Now for the bad. What I didn't like about Bishara's book was that he is very jet setting while the average event goer is not so much. So I ask the writer Does it work in Baseball with the Toronto Blue Jays? I have to assume that the writer has a passion and really loves the NBA, but really I think the moral of this story should be about nefarious scalping which would be far more interesting. The reason I'll cite as an example. For me, I enter contests.

I try to win for free.

If I win, I gained it free. If I don't win, I move on to the next one. In essence if I had to pay for a ticket with any money I definitely beat nothing except the money out of my pocketbook. In other words, paying for an NBA game is not beating them. I would consider the title of the book a poor choice of words. All in all, a decent book. Would I recommend it? Yes to certain persons those who love NBA and those who want to know how to find tickets but still are not free.

Would I read another book by Motez Bishara? Yes if it shows me an inside look at the shady world of Scalping in true to life non fiction and includes a more varied selection of Sporting Events. Apr 07, LMDF rated it it was amazing. I recently decided to read it again, and see if it was as good as the first time: The author takes you on an NBA tour de force without a single lull.

And while I suppose the purpose of the book is to show how the market for basketball tickets is mispriced, and teach you how to get around it with scalpers or online, for me the best part of the book are the stories.

It is rare to find a book so well written you can feel every win, every disappointment, the excitement; you can almost hear the crowds chanting. Once you finish the book you really do want to just go out to a game. This is not just a book on sports, this is not a dry analysis of pricing or some documentary on scalping, this is true entertainment that everyone can enjoy even non-sports fans.

This is an ideal read for commuters: And any guy that wants to get his girlfriend even slightly excited about going to a game with him should get this for her. Without a doubt anyone who reads this book will love it and must recommend it as highly as I do. I have never been to an NBA game and have only fleeting knowledge of some of the major stars, but this did not stop me from really enjoying this book.

I would recommend it to any casual sports fan. Part road trip, it's of interest to anyone who's ever had any interest in acquiring seemingly hard-to-get tickets. The author has a whimsical style - think of a younger, cooler version of Bill Bryson - and also a great sense of humour.

However, he also has some serious points to make about the finances of basketball, which have implications for other professional sports. One person found this helpful. I am not an avid sports fan.

Beating the NBA: Tales from a Frugal Fan

Amusing, and full of witty anecdotes and observations that keep even the least sports minded engaged and amused. First-time author Bishara does a great job of bringing the casual reader into life on the edges of the NBA world and beyond. Scalping and haggling his way through cities and games, the reader gains insight into what it takes to be a frugal fan in today's ever expanding professional sports scene for the common man. Again, a great read. Motez' book is written from the perspective of an avid basketball fan who loves it on all levels.

He delivers some very crisp thoughts on the economics of the game and there are some really valuable tips for fans who who want to go to the game without breaking the bank. And it's all delivered in an easy to read, humorous style. As a sports fan and one who tends be be obsessed with getting a great deal, the book was immediately intriguing. Upon completing the read, I can definitely say that I'm excited to attend my next NBA game and attempt to procure tickets at a discount.

What I can also say is that Motez's book was a page turner True of a great writer, he gives enough detail to paint a picture but not so much that the story gets bogged down. This book is very entertaining and full of lots of smiles. Makes you want to try some of his "how to get tickets cheap" tactics.

See a Problem?

I was curious to read this after seeing it pop up in the twittersphere a few times: I love basketball and with tickets becoming out of reach of us mere mortals I really wanted to learn how to go see some live games without taking out a second mortgage. I have to say the cover was not really enticing me to open up Pandora's box, but I thought I'd give it a go. Wow, was I surprised how amazing this book actually is. It is so much more than what I expected. This is not just a book on tricks to buy cheap tickets even though it does do what it says on the tin, and possibly in the most imaginative way possible , this is a book of short stories that make you smile and make you laugh.

The excitement of the game is almost palpable chapter after chapter, and you want to go and follow in the author's footsteps so that you too can have as much fun before and after games as he did. As soon as the book arrived I thought I'd just flip through it to see what it was like, but to my surprise after reading the Prologue I was hooked, and I didn't put it down until the Acknowledgements. I can't wait for the season to start up again so I can test out some ticket buying techniques.

Really, though, this is an awesome read not just for sports fans, but for anyone who loves a well written story.

NEW Beating the NBA: Tales From a Frugal Fan by Motez Bishara | eBay

This book is a fun and educational read. It provides not only a often hilarious look into a journey across the NBA from the perspective of fan, but also a very valuable guide to the ticket buyer in terms of procuring tickets based upon ticket economics and various other factors. Motez does an excellent job providing insight into each basketball town he visits and individual games.

I learned a great deal about how NBA ticket pricing works. Where I found it to be most useful thou was as an instructional guide to ticket procurement - a how to on judging demand and dealing in the ticket aftermarket. I would recommend it for both fans of the NBA as well as to anyone who attends live events in general.

Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. The book explains the many means of purchasing tickets for NBA games without spending ridiculous amounts of money. Motez adds in many captivating short stories and experiences while obtaining these tickets, all of which make for a wonderful read.
