More and Different: Notes from a Thoughtful Curmudgeon by Philip W. Anderson

Notes from a Thoughtful Curmudgeon by Philip W. Philip Anderson was educated at University High School in Urbana, Illinois, at Harvard BS , PhD , and further educated at Bell Laboratories, where his career coincided with the greatest period of that remarkable institution. Starting in , he shared his time with Cambridge University until and then with Princeton, where he continued full time as Joseph Henry Professor until As an emeritus he remains active in research, and at press time he was involved in several scientific controversies about high profile subjects, in which his point of view, though unpopular at the moment, is likely to prevail eventually.

His colleagues have made him one of the two physicists most often cited in the scientific literature, for several decades. His work is characterized by mathematical simplicity combined with conceptual depth, and by profound respect for experimental findings. He has explored areas outside his main discipline, the quantum theory of condensed matter for which he won the Nobel Prize , on several occasions: He was more recently a reviewer of science and science-related books for the Times London Higher Education Supplement as well as an occasional contributor to Science, Nature, and other journals.

I recently reread the article and decided to purchase a collection of his essays "More and Different. Note that the articles and essays in the book are generally targeted more towards a working scientist than a general technical reader.

Jun 19, Cemalec rated it it was amazing. Since I'm one of the only crazy people who listed this book, I'll say that it helps to be a physicist if you want to read it. He says himself he's not the best popularizer, and honestly, I think he's right. There's just a lot of stories about him and his amazing colleagues at Bell Labs, and earnest curiosity that's missing in a lot of the overblown faux-wonder of Brain Greene and the string theorists.

A mixed bag, not very well edited, and overpriced, but with some absolutely brilliant gems amongst the rest. For example "When Scientists Go Astray", quoted here. I would give the book 5 stars for professional physicists - those gems are worth it and I'm glad I read it. For others, well, caveat emptor. Sep 09, Philip rated it liked it.
