Although critical opinion is divided on what is her best work, her strengths and style can be gleaned from the following 16 books: The last-named is a collection of all but one of Gladys Mitchell's short stories from to , many previously uncollected; edited and with a comprehensive introduction by Nicholas Fuller.

Archived from the original on 8 December Retrieved 9 February It is a worrying moment when the sanest, most sensible person in the group is Mrs Bradley who has the unenviable task of managing the others.

Violence of course eventually breaks out amongst the party and it is up to Mrs Bradley to unravel the mystery. One thing that did amuse me was the quote on the cover of my copy from Edmund Crispin, who asserts that Mitchell has a pellucid writing style. I think my main issue with the book was its length as the plot felt very stretched at points, which affected the pacing of the story and in the first half there is definitely a lack of focus.

There is a general feeling of something sinister going on, but nothing definite for Mrs Bradley to follow up. There are dramatic moments but the density of the book at times reduces their impact. Like Liked by 1 person.

Annoyingly it has a number of good elements, but unfortunately they are not used effectively and they tend to get lost in the story. Fans of the ancient Greeks may get more out of it.

Been a while since I have read it. I like the Greek setting, the atmosphere of temples and ruins, the sense of remoteness, the comic bickering of the archaeologists, and the use of the Oresteia and Homer. I think it helps to have a grounding in Greek mythology; I was one of those odd children who knew his classics in kindergarten. The chapter heading quotations from Aristophanes are apposite; there are a couple which seem to continue the conversation at the end of the last chapter.

St. Peter's Finger (Mrs. Bradley, #9) by Gladys Mitchell

The victim, Armstrong, is compared to Dionysus who was also the judge in The Frogs , in his dissolute and unsavoury nature; however, whereas Dionysus caused Pentheus to be torn apart by the Bacchae, here the Bacchae turn upon and rend Dionysus. I did figure out who was the murderer and early on but, with the author's convoluted plot lines I was not sure I was right until the end.

The nuns and the girls from their orphanage were no help either. They tidied up the bathroom! When "accidents" occurred someone was always cleaning up any mess. Today's police investigators would be furious. Bradley manages to ferret out the culprit. Life in a convent is certainly interesting and Gladys Mitchell makes it as fascinating as any modern thriller. I am sorry I missed her books when I was younger but I am very happy to be reading them now.

I love the complicated plots and the diverse variety of characters in each book.

If you like tangled webs of deceit then you will enjoy this book. Despite being not especially likable as a person, Mrs. Bradley is an entertaining, eccentric sleuth in the mold of classic detective fiction. The setting is atmospheric and the mystery is clever, though a bit unfair as the reader is not privy to everything that Mrs.

Bradley knows until she reveals all at the end. As seems to be the case with many of the books in this series, a superabundance of characters sometimes makes following who is doing what a bit of a chore.

Nonetheless, fans of Golden Age British mysteries should find St. Peter's Finger a pleasant read. One of my most enjoyed genre. I bought this as a Kindle deal and enjoyed it so much, I bought a couple more by this same author. The main character is a woman well ahead of her time. Women at the early part of the twentieth century were groomed and expected to focus solely on making an advantageous marriage, have children and run a household.
