Ken Taylor: Diplomat pulled off the Canadian Caper

The room was very nice. The breakfast was good as well. We didn't want to leave but needed to venture out and see the rest of Sri Lanka. We will definitely return. My Room was very basic and bedding stained not sure had been changed as I was only staying one night, breakfast very basic no real choice. Hard to judge as I was only staying one night wanted a quiet room as I had a 15 hour flight may have been unlucky as there was a religious festival going on very noisy which I should been warned about as it went on until the early hours.

Manager arranged a taxi pick up from the airport and Tuk Tuk to the railway station. Swimming pool, clean, quiet, nice staff. Great breakfast and gorgeous setting Lovely staff very secure. It's such a beautiful place and really lovely staff who go above and beyond to make you feel relaxed and at home. Shower did not work.

Good location away from the hubbub of Colombo. Charming staff - lovely owner. Some rooms better than others. Fun pool inside the hotel patio. Lack of power in the showers meant difficulty in washing my partners hair. Ok for blokes though. Location, attentiveness of staff, good breakfast, a real desire to help out. Wifi was not upto expectations.

The place is extremely far from anything of interest, so no restaurants or any place to eat nearby. Since we stayed in many places in Sri Lanka, and some of them were far from the center we assumed there will be dinner options at the property, but they only have breakfast so we had to order a delivery from one of the restaurants in the city center for dinner and the delivery took some time.. Nice design, spacious room and great pool.

When they heard it was our honeymoon they left us a lovely fruit basket which was very nice of them. The owner was very nice, and even gave us his phone number when we went out in case we had any problem. I mention that it was a friends birthday on the night of our arrival and they organised cake and beers..

It's That Man Again [1941]

Traffic dust pollution whilst walking around. Set in nice grounds away from traffic, great swimming pool, food we sent out for was nice, staff were exceptional. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The villa surroundings are quiet and peaceful. Was up a quite street and lots of walking to find food but an option for takeout food was there that we could have used.

Card machine not working so had to pay cash. Really great place with a very nice room and staff. The pool looked nice but I didn't use. Had some drinks on the roof which was nice. Ken Taylor, who was the Canadian ambassador to Iran during the hostage crisis and rescue that became known as the Canadian Caper, died on Thursday afternoon. Ken Taylor may have been the unlikeliest celebrity ever to come out of Canada. He worked in the unglamorous milieu of international trade, had a fatherly if dapper fashion sense, and deflected the spotlight to others whenever possible.

But long after Mr. Taylor helped mastermind the escape of six U. It was a lot of fun, actually! Still, she noted, "He appreciated it and enjoyed being a rock star, but [he felt] it was Canada that was the rock star. Because wherever we went, it was 'Thank you, Canada. Taylor passed away on Thursday afternoon, however, it was he to whom the tributes flowed. Bruce Heyman, the U. Ambassador to Canada, issued a series of tweets in memory of Mr. Taylor, including a photo of his first meeting with the former Canadian ambassador to Iran. Taylor died in New York on Thursday at age 81, a little over two months after receiving a diagnosis of colon cancer.

Born in Calgary on Oct. One Friday morning in , he arrived early to breakfast at International House, the foreign students' residence, where he found Patricia Lee, an Australian-born doctoral student in epidemiology, sitting alone. He was, she recalled, a hard-working student who wore the burden of his studies lightly. Taylor said with a laugh. The two married in in a small ceremony at International House, shortly before steaming off by passenger freighter to Mr.

Taylor's first posting in Canada's foreign service, as a trade consultant in off-the-radar Guatemala. He went on to similar postings in Pakistan and London before returning to Ottawa in to work his way up in the civil service. Three years later, he became general director of the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service.

In , with Iran becoming an increasingly important trading partner for Canada, Mr. Taylor got the nod as Canadian Ambassador, overseeing eight foreign-service officers and 25 local staff. Affably low-key and sensitive to the nuances of the enigmatic local political structure in Iran, Mr. Taylor possessed a cool detachment, according to Allan Gotlieb, a former Canadian ambassador to the United States. Gotlieb wrote in his memoir The Washington Diaries. Taylor combined shrewdness, courage and a collaborative nature which, when necessary, gave way to decisive leadership.

All of those qualities would be called upon, beginning Nov. Taylor and his wife took in two at the official residence, while John Sheardown, Mr. Taylor's chief immigration officer, sheltered four. Over the following weeks, Mr. Taylor acted as an undercover go-between for the U. Meanwhile, he worked to keep the mood of his guests, and those of Mr.

There were games nights at the residences and spirited dinners. But with rumours floating that the Canadians were sheltering Americans, a secret plan was hatched to create fake passports for the house guests, and to spirit them out of the country. Joe Clark's cabinet passed a secret order-in-council authorizing the ruse, marking the first time since the Second World War that had occurred. Taylor considered simply including the six with dozens of other Canadians leaving the country — he was in the process of shutting down the embassy — but the Central Intelligence Agency preferred to concoct a story about a Hollywood film production, with a "Canadian" crew, scouting possible locations in Tehran.

Two days later, on Jan. A commercial Swissair flight carried them to safety. Once they were gone, Mr. Taylor swiftly shuttered the embassy, and he and his staff fled the country. Radio stations played O Canada in tribute. Taylor was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by U. Taylor was named a member of the Order of Canada. In late , Mr. Taylor became Consul-General in New York, where he was welcomed as a hero. Four years later, he left public service to become an executive with RJR Nabisco, where he worked on expanding the company's international business.

Taylor's business interests and natural joie de vivre brought him many friends in high places. In the s and '90s, he was a regular participant on fishing trips to the Arctic organized by the Alberta industrialist Peter Pocklington, alongside other well-known Canadians. Taylor recalled, "but he was not much of a fisherman. I kept asking about the fish, for him to bring one back.
