The debate about the effects of this research mode is intensifying: What is the benefit of problem-oriented, integrative and context-related approaches in TDR? Which effects does TDR show and how do they relate to the often context-specific research processes, their results and products, or to efforts of generalization and transfer of knowledge?
Empirical research concerning these questions is still limited. This special issue wants to enhance the debate on these issues and address its gaps. It focuses on policy relevant sustainability research. Works that addresses one or more of the following questions through either new conceptual formulations or empirical studies meta-analyses of several transdisciplinary projects or transdisciplinary case studies are of particular interest.

The Water-Energy-Food Nexus Knowledge-Action Network aims to better understand interactions between water, energy and food systems, and how the synergies and trade-offs among them can be better managed with the goal of delivering these needs for all in a sustainable and equitable way. Activities initiated by the Steering Committee will enhance collaboration and interaction among the research communities and practice communities working on Nexus issues, spurring the co-creation of new knowledge and the application of knowledge in practice.
Planetary health research focuses on understanding and quantifying the human health effects of accelerating environmental change, including changes in climate, freshwater availability, biodiversity, food and nutrition, sustainable fishing, agricultural productivity, air quality, and water or airborne diseases. To catalyse innovative ideas among the disparate yet integrally related fields, The Lancet Planetary Health will publish a booklet of outstanding abstracts in planetary health research, in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Planetary Health Alliance on May 29—31, , at the University of Edinburgh in the UK.
Researchers from any discipline relevant to planetary health are invited to submit an abstract of their research describing a recent study or a project currently in process that contributes to the gaps in knowledge, governance, and imagination as reported by the Rockefeller— Lancet Commission.

The Natural Assets Knowledge-Action Network has recently published a synthesis document on its research foci for the coming five years.
The document had beforehand been opened for a wider consultation to capture feedback on its content from a wide range of academic and non-academic stakeholders. Luers started her career in Latin America, as co-founder and the first executive director of Agua Para La Vida Water for Life working with rural communities to enhance access to potable water. Craig Starger, research liaison officer for Future Earth, delivered a statement at the United Nations General Assembly, addressing how the research community can help the world to meet targets for a sustainable ocean. The statement focused on how nations around the world can meet the 14 th Sustainable Development Goal SDG14 , a set of targets for improving the health of the ocean. Starger drew on a recent report from ICSU that argues that to meet this ambition, researchers must first understand how ocean health is connected to other sustainability endeavours — from curbing climate change to shifting consumption behaviours.

Participation is open to government representatives, experts from think tanks, agencies, NGOs and academia interested in public sector reform and bringing evidence and science to bear on decision making.
All members of the GLP community are invited to create and lead new initiatives, great and small. Community members are encouraged to actively engage in initiating and organizing activities that contribute to the GLP. Activities that constitute the formation of a Working Group WG may include the organization of workshops that address GLP science priorities, synthesis work on a chosen topic within LSS, journal special issues, the development of land system science collaboration tools, and many other activities.
A WG that undertakes such an activity should be made up of participants from more than one institution and country and the activities should be more integrative than those conducted within a normal research project. GLP WGs are expected to sustain a certain minimal level of activity.
