Hafiz : the voice of God : a hundred odes in SearchWorks catalog

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Hafiz or Hafez is a 14th century Persian poet. This is a modern translation of of his odes. He seems to have been quite a libertine, especially by 14th century standards!

At least if his poems are meant to be read literally I'm not sure I like this translation. On a poetic level, it just doesn't flow well. While they are occasional bright spots, it generally has the feel of 4th grade poetry.

I also have reason to suspect that this translation is rather loose in diverting from the text. Of Hafiz or Hafez is a 14th century Persian poet. I plan to read a different translation of Hafiz's poems, probably Richard Le Gallienne's translation.

This book was for me very different from other books of Persian Poets like Hafiz and Rumi that I have read and loved, for two reasons: The translation keeps a rhythm and rhyme in the poems and this often requires an "artificial" word order of some lines, which reduces the smooth flow of absorbing the meaning while reading.

There is a great similarity in the general content of the poems, as the poet tends to describe his feelings with very direct reference to the love of a man for a woman. Because of these two factors together, I did not like this book as much as I have liked other books with poems of Hafiz.
