The Vanishing Passenger The famous mystery writer, Gilbert Finch, is coming to Greenfield to speak at the library, and the Aldens can't wait to meet him. When they go with Grandfather to pick Finch up at the train station, he is nowhere to be found.

It seems there are a few people in Greenfield who don't want this yo-yo completed. The Boxcar Children will piece the evidence together to get to the bottom of this mystery. Amy rents cabins to tourists who hope to see the mysterious underwater creature, the Ogopogo, swimming in the lake. Henry, Jesse, Violet, and Benny can't wait to try to spot the Ogopogo from their cabin. Amy tells the children about a riddle that an old friend left for her in one of the cabins that could lead to a small treasure.
As the riddle starts to unfold, strange things start to happen around the lake.

Something is moving around in the water late at night, and someone doesn't want the Aldens helping Amy. Will the Boxcar Children crack the riddle before it's too late? The largest attraction this year will be the popular Greenfield Four. A big-time music producer is going to be in the crowd to catch the show, and Greenfield residents hope their favorite local group will be famous soon. The day before the show, The Greenfield Four arrive at the rehearsal hall to find all of their instruments missing! The Box Car Children is suitable for 2nd and 3rd grade readers.

Eventually, they meet their grandfather, a wealthy and kind person although they initially believed he was cruel. The four children decide to start living with their grandfather, who even moves their beloved boxcar into his backyard so that they could use it as their playhouse. In subsequent novels, the four children encounter many mysteries and adventures within their neighborhood and at locations they visit accompanied by their grandfather. Most of these novels are set within locations these children visit over holidays such as Christmas break or summer vacation.
This novel begins with the four children, taking shelter in a bakery after they buy bread with some little cash they still have. Just to be allowed to spend their night in the bakery, the four agree to give assistance around the bakery. When they later overhear what the baker has in plan for them, they decide to flee.

In the edition, the four flee because they overhear the baker saying that he would send to their grandfather, who they think will treat them cruelly. The most recent prints of this book are based upon the edition. After fleeing, they find an abandoned boxcar, in which they begin a new independent life. Henry begins performing various odd jobs for a young doctor Doctor McAllister in the original edition and Doctor Moore in other editions in Silver City, in order to earn the much needed money to buy food and other necessities.
Later on, she allows him to take home some carrots and parsnips he had picked as they were very small. They run away because they believed he was cruel. Trying not to frighten the four children into escaping again, he decides not to reveal his full names. Eventually, they are surprised but delighted after they discover that he was their grandfather.
