Will she overcome the demons in her past, or will the life she led condemn her for all-time? About Yorick a novella: She wants nothing more than to join her loved ones in the afterlife, but then a gruesome discovery along the banks of theMerrimack River changes everything. Yorick is a creepy tale about a lonely retiree who finds a new friend in an unexpected place. It is certain to disturb and entertain. It took me all summer and some of the fall to finish it, but when I did, I immediately dug up another King book.
My love affair with the creepy, bizarre, and thought-provoking had officially begun. My next title, The Button, will be published in the fall of My background as a newspaper correspondent and freelance writer has earned me dozens of publishing credits for local news articles as well. I received an Associates Degree in Journalism from Middlesex Community College, and after a few years of freelance writing, I decided to go back to school. Seriously, I have a problem. The demon Noc and Honest Jack were living in the underworld.
They were using their own methods to get what they wanted. I know that we are talking about hell and underworld here, but it was too much for me. The images of the underworld were really vivid. Plenty of characters, troubles on every corner. She had to face her own underworld. Delilah Brachman is having a tough time. First, she gets killed. Then her problems get worse. This is a great way to start a book, and the rest lives up to the promise of the opening. Her journey across the twisted landscape echoes her internal journey through her life's thoughts and deeds. She must come to terms with the things she has done if she is to understand how she got here and how to get out.

If you're killed in this underworld, you're dead for all time, and there are plenty of ways for that to happen. Delilah becomes a pawn in an unholy war between powerful forces, and she must evade the clutches of murderous minions.
Interview with author Vlad Vaslyn - T Gleichner - Digital Journal
The author begins with a tough proposition, a totally unlikeable lead character. Stay with her, though, because her struggle is worthwhile. And the descriptions of the underworld are worth the read, as the author skillfully appeals to all the senses. This is a place of moral and physical darkness, alive with the filth of decay and evil.
The book gives many eerie echoes of Stephen King, in a very good way. Because of the realistic manner in which the horrors are presented, it will not appeal to casual readers of tamer fare. But if you're a horror aficionado, you will enjoy it. Might even give you a few nightmares—a good thing in this genre. In the minutes before she is killed, we see her slap down her father, her sister, a nurse, a receptionist, a cab driver -- anyone who gets in her way.
This anger comes with her into her afterlife as she goes toe to toe not only with the guilt from her life, but with the demons that run the underworld. In this dangerous purgatory, she has six days before her train takes her to a final judgment on her life -- if she can survive. And then there's Noc, the fragment of a demon with the mind of a dirty mouthed ten-year-old, and Lucy Shaw, whose face will always haunt her.
Only one relationship seems true -- if it can withstand the threats and conspiracies they both face. Fierce loyalty and all-encompassing love are traits to be admired, are they not? We must protect those who are closest to us, and when we fail at that we must bring about justice for those whom we love, no matter the cost. These are the good intentions that create the monster that Delilah Brachman has become. Bitter, hardened, and unapologetic, she has become her own worst collateral damage, maybe even no better than those whose actions started her along such a hateful and cruel path.

Upon her death, she becomes a vicious, selfish pawn in the power struggle between demons in a twisted purgatory where she awaits her judgment, which is unlikely to be a favorable one. Is it too late to change her fate? Does it even matter now?
Should we even care about such a vile person? Yet somehow we do. Vaslyn's Delilah is wonderfully written. Despite her hatred and her cruelty she still manages to be a sympathetic character. As the novel progresses, we learn and evaluate how Delilah has become who she is. As she experiences memories and emotions long tucked away, and really begins to examine her life, she can see where she's gone wrong.

With the help of new and surprising friends - and Delilah does not have friends! This is a great debut novel from a talented writer with richly drawn characters. I highly recommend this book! Gritty, dark, and suspenseful are three adjectives that immediately come to mind having just finished reading Brachman's Underworld. Delilah Brachman wakes up to find herself stuck in a sort of 'purgatory halfway-house place' after she dies while performing her first good deed in decades.
She was bitter, angry, and full of hatred and prejudice before she died. We do find out that she had good reasons for being this way. Death did not improve her mood one bit.

She deals with other 'in-betweener Gritty, dark, and suspenseful are three adjectives that immediately come to mind having just finished reading Brachman's Underworld. She deals with other 'in-betweeners', insane warlords, and demons with the same contempt and hatred that she had used in life untill she, unexpectedly, comes to care about someone else stuck in this in-between place. Delilah learns and grows as a person, but is it too late or just in time? I got this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review, and I'm very glad I did because I may not have discovered author Vlad Vaslyn on my own.
I will be looking for more of his work. Overall, I liked the story. The biggest issue I had with the story is that the main character, Delilah Brachman, is not very likable. She is rude, self-interested, uncaring toward others, a racist and beautiful with a great body. Even though Delilah comes to realize the errors of her ways by the end, I still found it hard to care what happened to her. I suppose the dilemma for the author was that the character I picked up "Brachman's Underworld" at a local author event at the Groton, MA library.
I suppose the dilemma for the author was that the character of Delilah had to be bad enough to go to "a bad place" after death and to be so bad in fact to end up getting a ticket for the Tuesday train. How do you make a character like that both evil and likeable? Not an easy task, but Vaslyn gave it a try. All that said, the story was very creative and I enjoyed it.
The story was able to keep my interest going despite being on the long side pages. The synopsis of the book caught my attention. This is a well written debut novel that gets my praise for being original. I think serious sci-fi readers would enjoy this story much more than I did. The characters are well developed but I felt Delilah was just too obnoxious. I couldn't put it down. As I read this book, I kept telling myself "just one more page" as the clock ticked closer to midnight each work night.
I finished it in one week! The storyline moved along nicely, without any dead spots that were just words filling up the page.
Brachman’s Underworld
Delilah is a gritty, determined woman who I cheered for the entire book. Kevin is the unsuspected hero while the "Noc" is a delightful, evil creature. Reading a book that kept my full attention the entire durati Absolutely riveting! Reading a book that kept my full attention the entire duration is refreshing. I had a hard time putting it down! I give this book two "thumbs up!
