Running on Faith [Unplugged Version]

But little of this coverage focused on the part of the conservative base with which McCain may have the most problems — the religious right. In fact, the press focused more attention on the leaders of the evangelical movement themselves, rather than on McCain. During the pre-primary period of , religious broadcaster Pat Robertson, North Carolina preacher Tadd Grandstaff and the Southern Baptist Convention together were just as likely to be featured in a religion story as McCain.

Like Obama, McCain later ran into trouble with the media over his relationship with a controversial religious figure. Hagee, an influential figure in the conservative Christian community, is also known for past comments that have offended Catholics, gays and other groups. On May 22, , McCain officially renounced the endorsement of the minister. While the story bears some resemblance to the Wright controversy, the Hagee endorsement drew little attention compared with the Wright controversy. In the first four months of , Hagee was a lead newsmaker in only one campaign story among all that were studied including religion-focused items , whereas Wright was a lead newsmaker in one out of every 50 campaign stories — in total.

In May — following the month period studied — the Hagee controversy flared up again. It is impossible to definitively say why media coverage of McCain paid relatively little attention to the issue of religion. It might be related to the impression that the conservative religious base of the Republican Party has lost some political influence see May news stories about the Rev. One major religion narrative occupied most of the space in the media narrative during the primary season: Here, there may be some further hints as to the way the press may approach faith in the general election coverage.

The paper cited poll numbers suggesting a large number of Americans would never vote for a Mormon. Would you vote for a divorced actor as president? But then they saw Ronald Reagan. They heard his vision. They heard his experience. No other candidate even came close to receiving the same amount of attention to their faith that year.

From the day he entered the race on Feb. Journalists often expressed sympathy for a candidate subject to anti-Mormon sentiment while simultaneously fueling the fire by suggesting his religion could be an impediment to his electability. For instance, on the Feb. The well-known activist the Rev. Neither Obama nor McCain were the subject of religion reporting at all that month. The Grand Rapids Press , on Dec. Romney spoke on the topic of faith in front of invited guests — many of them evangelical leaders — in the auditorium at the George Bush Presidential Library in Texas on Dec. But in the entire speech, Romney explicitly referenced his Mormon faith by name only once.

Media coverage of the speech was brief but intense and was all but over in a day. Marc Caputo of The Miami Herald praised the speech in an analysis on the same day: In the weeks that followed, some papers, especially in their op-ed pages, used a comparison with John F. Republicans and GOP-leaning independents, with little difference between evangelicals and non-evangelicals, were a bit more positive: According to a Gallup poll conducted on Dec. A later Gallup survey , conducted Feb. Nearly one-in-four said they would not vote for a Mormon.

Twenty-eight days following the speech, Romney lost the first primary battle to Huckabee, and on Feb. There was also some coverage of the religion angle when it came to the other candidates in the presidential race. As with Obama, McCain and Romney, religion coverage of the other candidates during the primaries was largely event-focused and faded soon after the event subsided.

The Democratic candidates had a major opportunity to discuss their views on faith in June , when CNN sponsored a debate about faith.

The forum gave front-runners Obama, Clinton and John Edwards the chance to discuss faith with a public and journalistic audience that had maintained some skepticism about the prospect of devout Democrats. God got me through marital strife. Ordained Baptist minister Mike Huckabee had some of the strongest conservative views of any candidate and was often portrayed in the media as everything evangelicals were looking for in a presidential candidate.

He was an early advocate of and participant in the covenant marriage movement , a proponent of teaching intelligent design in public schools and an opponent of legalized abortion. However, there may be more to the story than that. For example, a Jan. The NCI is designed to provide news consumers, journalists and researchers with hard data about what stories and topics the media are covering, the trajectories of major stories and differences among news platforms. It examines the news agenda of 48 different outlets in five media sectors, including newspapers, online, network TV, cable TV and radio.

The findings are released in a weekly NCI report. The complete methodology of the weekly NCI can be found at http: Main Universe of Stories: There is a kind of memory that leads us to re-member — that is — to put back together that which has been broken. And there is much of that still to be done. I decided the day it went up that when I ran by I would take off my running hat and would pray for the victims and the families as well as for the first responders and their families.

That practice has helped me to re-member. What I continue to realize is that humanity is capable of so much horror and so much good. God has given us a great deal of power, ability, and influence…and sometimes we misuse it in a way that harms, isolates, oppresses, demeans, or destroys.

When we remember who we are as creations — as children — of a God who is good and loving — then we can remember our connection to all that is good and our connection to one another. We re-member the broken and begin to use our power to bring about healing, restoration, and reconciliation. There is still much work to do. That is our calling. I hope you will join me. The other morning I was enjoying a run on one of the beautiful greenways in our area.

I have been trying to run at a slower pace than normal as I train for the 50 for Freedom mile run at the end of September. But this particular morning I was feeling pretty good and so I was running at a sub 8 minute mile — not that fast — but much faster than I plan to run the miler.

As I came out of the woods from the greenway and hopped onto a sidewalk I noticed a runner up ahead that had just come out of a neighborhood. I decided that I would hang back and run behind him about yards so as not to push myself too hard on the rest of the run. Now — this runner was bigger than me — taller and more muscular. He looked more like a linebacker to me than a runner. I was planning to relax the rest of the run as I followed him down the road but what I discovered was that he had no intention of taking it easy.

He actually sped up slightly. I had no intention of trying to pass…I just wanted to keep up — to keep him in my sights so as to have a way to stay motivated to keep a good pace.

But it pushed me — it challenged me more than I thought it would. We kept this up for several miles and then I realized that he was going a different direction than I wanted to go. I was ready to turn and head back to the house and he was going on. It was time to stop following this guy and head in a different direction. As I turned off the road I thought about the symbolism behind this choice. In those moments it is important to remember who we are and what our goals, priorities, and purpose are and make the hard choice to part company.

Sometimes this can cause pain. Sometimes it leads to a severed relationship. Sometimes it requires us to reevaluate our own lives. Whatever it requires, it is worth it. Being true to ourselves, to our maker, to our purpose in life allows us to live with integrity. As you come to that fork in the road, path, trail, or greenway, I hope and pray that for you it will be clear which way you need to go.

I hope that you will be able to take the time you need to make the right decision for you and for those whom you love.

The right path will become evident to you before you know it. I recently spent several days visiting my parents in Boone, NC. One of the things that we enjoyed while I was there was a long walk on the greenway. I also ran on the greenway a couple of times and enjoyed the beautiful wild flowers, wild life, and clear running water of the New River. I feel so blessed to be able to get out and enjoy these wonderful natural gifts that God has given to us. Walking with my parents gave me a deep appreciation for my family and for the roots that I have in the Boone community as well as the community of First Presbyterian Church in Boone.

I give thanks for all I learned from my parents and for the ways that they helped prepare me for life. The images of roots and wings have often been referenced in parenting. Parents and other mentors help children develop strong roots and strong wings so that when the time is right they can fly on their own. I feel like I have had the blessing of both. Not every child has the ability to fly away. They are imprisoned there by an oppressor who takes advantage of them and tries to gain a monetary benefit from their suffering. This is the face of human trafficking.

Anytime a child is held back, whether through bullying, or abuse, or poverty, or war, there is some part of their ability to fly that is impacted.

We can turn this around. Through advocacy, encouragement, mentoring, education, and others means of support we can lift children up and help strengthen their ability to fly in this world. Where can you plug in and make a difference today? Can you sign up at a local school to read to a child? Can you be a big brother or sister in the community? Can you teach Sunday school or help with a youth ministry? Can you donate funds to an organization that works with and for children on the margins?

There is something that you can do! So do it today and help a child fly. When I see one now I remember my calling to help a child fly. Perhaps you can think about that too. Eric Clapton - Old Love

They are making a difference and helping repair and rebuild lives so children can fly. Thanks for your support. We had some high winds and heavy rains a few days ago. It brought down a lot of limbs and leaves and even a few trees. One of my favorite running paths — the new green-way in south Cornelius, had lots of debris and a large tree covering the path.

As I was running I had to leap over the tree. It was even a little fun. I thought about the hurdles in life that we sometime have to jump in order to get anywhere. I thought about the hurdle of running 50 miles in one day on September 29th. I thought about the hurdle that countless families face to find their missing children, or to escape modern-day slavery, or to pay off some insurmountable debt that hangs around their necks like a large stone too big to move. Yesterday I ran on the same path and discovered that someone had come along and cut and removed the section of tree that had blocked the path.

Farther down the path I saw a man on a tractor with a high-powered blower who was blowing all the debris off the trail. Clapton, and this songs is one of the reasons why. Simply put, it's inredible. He explains the importance of having faith in what he believes in and hopes for it everyday. He is in love General Comment great song General Comment Ive been listening to this song lately since i feel the same damn way right now.

My luck with women has been real bad, no matter how hard i try man. I guess women dont like the lack of things I have to offer. So all ive been doing is running on faith. It kinda sucks for real. General Comment This song is one of the most emotional songs Eric Clapton sings. I always took it to be about someone who lost a very great love, and is pretty much empty without it and feels like everything would be alright if that love returned.

Where Americans Find Meaning in Life

I love the way Clapton sings the line "and we'd go running on faith. Like it is all that he wants in the world. So powerful, especially if you identify with that interpretation.
