Rigorous and disciplined, this is an essential book with necessary lessons and perspectives not just for historians but anthropologists, doctors, even lawyers, and anyone serious about people and the world. In each essay, Brown places her person at some boundary--not just geographical though that's always present and apparent , but at the limit of some structured, inadequate, strained understanding, whether it be a political outline of ethnicity, a scientific diagnosis of a disease, a historical depiction of an event--and Janus-like looks both into the accepted wisdom and out into the shadowy mixed realm of potential truths.

Always illuminating, always engaging, always just a little too short, always honoring the places and especially the people she writes about, these essays exemplify scholarly intellect and the role academic inquiry plays in the world.. I thought the characters o f this book were well developed and though the beginning was a little fragmented it was a definite page turner that kept me reading to the very end. What I really loved was the fact I could read without a zillion cuss words or too much graphic sex yet it was still exciting and riveting.

A feel-good book this is not, but a must read it definitely is!

Not Forgotten: theranchhands.com

We all need to wake up to the reality of what our lives could become and think really hard about how much "help" we want from our government. Bryars weaves some really hot button topics into a reality that you can't get from any news media. This book gives you a completely different viewpoint and one that, by the definition of the "forgotten man" you won't hear about because this "man" doesn't complain. I had a tough time putting it down, I got completely caught up in the lives of the characters and wanted so much for there to be a pretty bow all tied up at the end.

It's just hard to imagine that in our country something like this could happen - probably happens all the time. Robert Short uses history as a framework for a story of lost Short is a good historian, but best of all, he is a true romantic!

I love this book! This book is an important find. One fact alone is worth the purchase of the book. It begins, "Let the distance from T to figure 1 represent 1 mile, and the fall from 1 to A, 8 inches; then the fall from 2 to B will be 32 inches, and from 3 to C, 72 inches. In every mile after the first, the curvature downwards from the point T increases as the square of the distance multiplied by 8 inches. It works out that every mile must average a drop of 8 inches.

After 90 miles, earth must curve down one mile in order to create the roundness required to make the planet described by modern science. The Forgotten John Puller. Agent John Puller is still recovering from his last nightmare when he receives news from his father that his Aunt may need some help.
