She is the genius behind iconic and niche beauty products made from botanical extracts that in no time became the top picks of well-known makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts. My journey into skincare began as a small girl. I am passionate about pure, potent ingredients and about a return to our roots.

Our planet provides such an elegant bounty of delicious botanicals, clays, salts and spices that it is hard for me to fathom how we have strayed so far from that to the current trend of hocus-pocus performed in laboratories, mass produced plastic bottles filled with damaging synthetic chemicals and cheap fillers. I believe in simplicity. While I have given an incredible amount of attention to designing products that create a feeling of decadence and celebration, my very core is as basic and grounded as it gets.

Beauty truly does come from within and I know that without a healthy body and spirit, our skin suffers. This line was born out of a desire to create blissful bookends in my day, a time-out morning and night that was just for me. Having formulated for years out of necessity I am blessed with highly sensitive and chemically reactive skin , I yearned to create something that was simply luxurious and lovely.

My foundation in purity and simplicity is solid, but it was time for me to embrace playfulness and beauty in my potions. I wanted to feel something when I picked up a bottle and entered my cleansing ritual. I wanted to feel peace, joy, and celebration all in that one moment. And I wanted to share that with every woman I loved and cared about so she could feel this, too.

My inspiration comes from the delight in the discovery of new scents, colors, textures and the beautifying magic of plants and minerals straight from nature. Working intimately with these pure ingredients is heaven for me and infinitely inspiring.

Flood your plate with fresh greens, bold reds and oranges beet, sweet potato , blues and violets berries, red cabbage and a rotating variety of whole grains and legumes. During my modeling career, I learned through my years in the makeup chair that my own skin is not something I can compromise. I have the kind of complexion that is so sensitive and reactive, that one application of the wrong product will leave me covered in blisters and rashes, or a terrible breakout. My skin physically hurts when I do not treat it well, not to mention the self-consciousness that comes when you know you are not looking your best.

Not having a voice to say No to the products used on me as a model was one of the big reasons I happily closed that career door. At the end of the day, my health is too important and I have to be my first priority. As for beauty hacks — The Blue Cocoon is a lifesaver. It removes redness and inflammation, banishes flaky skin on contact and adds glow like no other.

It also helps foundation to go on smoother and more cleanly. I focus on vibrant, whole foods, but I also believe in a little indulgence. I eat very well and am a lover of good food. I subscribe to two different CSAs and love having these mystery boxes of super fresh fruits and vegetables show up on my doorstep.

Living in California, I am very blessed with incredible access to the best farm-fresh goodies year round. I believe in eating the rainbow, choosing the most vibrantly colored produce you can find and mixing up your meals regularly for nutritional variety.

I incorporate tons of whole unprocessed grains and every type of legume I can get my hands on. The power of good fats is vital to our well being, and I utilize them abundantly — avocado, olive, coconut, seeds and nuts and a variety of pure plant oils… these contain such powerful, nourishing energy. They also contribute greatly to gorgeous, plump skin. In this episode, host Ty Pennington admits that this promise is what he loves most about America.

His claim, however, exists in tension with the fact that all the families featured in Extreme Makeover are hard working and yet have fallen on hard times.

Had their house not caught fire, the family would not have needed help. Extreme Makeover piques audience interest by invoking foundational Amer- ican myths, featuring sensational family tragedies, and playing on our subcon- scious fears of homelessness. After all, beleaguered families seeking a way out of their American nightmare are increasingly more the norm than the excep- tion. The suspense and relief viewers share hits home as promises to be a record year in foreclosures. Combine the traditional importance of home with a hunger for security.

In other words, phi- lanthropy is central to the particular Christian mission of American home and nation. Critics agree that Extreme Makeover is more than just another reality show: It is a miracle that creates a new world for a family in seven days. Unlike God, though, the staff and volunteers usually need the full seven days to complete the project. With its charitable sensibilities and ability to mobilize entire communities with a single episode, EM: HE is setting a standard for a new genre: While, after appearing on the show, a few families express concern about the costs of constructing their new homes and their ability to pay taxes and upkeep, most are thankful.

Many businesses, furthermore, are so energized by the experience that they continue to volunteer their services and supplies. Significantly, Extreme Makeover airs on Sunday evenings. The gifts keep coming in every episode: The numerous material gifts overwhelm the family members and the audi- ence. In some cases, the families are literally overwhelmed—teasers for the program frequently play and replay family members ecstatically collapsing on the ground when they see their new home for the first time.

Others bow before their new domestic temple. Hands are thrown in the air and clasped in prayer. The hosts graciously give the new home to the family, receive their thanks, and share hugs and tears. Once lost and then found by Extreme Makeover, the participants are truly saved.

Both texts see helping the needy as a duty. It contained a detailed list of diseases and tragedies Extreme Makeover hoped to feature, including families whose members have Down Syndrome, skin cancer, muscular dys- trophy, or ALS.

Does it aim to help people or to market products? Farhi quotes host Ty Pennington as a specific example: Such passages emphasize how the book regards material domestic technology: It should exemplify Christian economy coupled with comfort and solid design. Although contemporary domestic icons such as Martha Stewart continue to extol the value of making bread from scratch, Beecher and Stowe saw the practicality of following the French model: Their book endorses the conveniences that ultimately produce a more efficient household.

Rather than bestowing goods or money, it is better to impart culture: While concerned with com- fort and convenience, Beecher and Stowe do not initially appear to endorse products in the same way. The specific maker of the stove is not mentioned. Nevertheless, Beecher and Stowe are by no means free of the pres- sures of the lucrative domestic marketplace. Rotskoff suggests that Harriet Beecher Stowe may be partly responsi- ble for the immense popularity of chromolithographs between and Three of the pictures mentioned are listed as a part of L.

Rotskoff points out that Stowe received several free chromolithographs from this company and praised the chromos in a printed letter: The product promotions of Extreme Makeover follow much more openly commercial lines. In some cases, the line between advertising and programming becomes hard to dis- tinguish. Theories about the relationship between commercial products and nine- teenth-century domesticity illuminate the marketing techniques employed by Extreme Makeover. Rather, Extreme Makeover seeks to give each family the home that, up to this point, it could not afford.

These aspects make them feel at home. When aesthetics, convenience, and safety unite in the new home, the family and the viewers experience the practical and emotional renovation of the space from house to home. The new domestic environment, furthermore, is often seen as a healing space. It softens the tragic loss of a family member, who would have been pleased to see the family in the new home. Lets [sic] just say he is supervising. We still think about him everyday [sic] and we will never forget him.

You all did a great job at reminding us of him everyday [sic]. The new home serves as a memorial to the father. Some of the most heart-rending programs are those that give families with special needs mem- bers the kinds of material technologies that truly turn a house into a home: Nor can it work, in the case of Extreme Makeover, if the families do not have access to a proper home.

Expansion and imperialism abroad are mirrored domestically, as well: The moral and political science of both these domestic texts participates in longstanding problematic images of a so-called great white father bestowing gifts on less fortunate ethnic others. The families, however, come from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds. I had the pleasure of not only reading this book but also participating in a study of it with Kathy Fullerton herself. The book takes our obsession with physical beauty and outward presentation to others and redefines our perspective as to what is most beautiful according to God's Word.

Our broken relationship with God is explained so that we can better understand how amazingly beautiful its restoration is. For a culture so occupied with the material, Kathy helpfully parallels the importance of taking care of our physical and spiritual health--the beauty of our souls. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever wanted to take better care of themselves as this text truly covers the importance of "working out" your soul.

This is a book I plan to revisit many times in the future. Kathy Fullerton has the ability to take complex biblical principles and explain them in a way that is easy to understand. In this book she tackles our spiritual walk and condenses the myriad aspects into coherent chapters with applicable exercises.

It is written with such clarity that it is beneficial to the new believer as well as one who has been studying the Bible for a long time. It can't help but draw you closer to The Lord.
