P has great passion, but lacks talent. His family and friends constantly make fun of his amateurishness of his masterpiece short films. When a young man is executed for committing murder, he leaves behind a curse letter, promising vengeance for all those connected to his unfair trial. A homeless veteran battles to survive against his demons in the remote Highlands of Scotland.

I did like Lord of Tears and gave it 6 out of 10 but there is simply no comparison with The Unkindness of Ravens. Lord of Tears showed potential but the latest movie to come from director Lawrie Brewster shows that he got his act together with the issues that film had.

As his hyper-empathy begins to manifest, he falls deeply in love with Lee, an enigmatic older woman who might be an ancient Native American demigoddess. Straddl Daren was always ahead of the curve, a prodigal son without focus or direction. Straddling the thin line between excess and addiction, Daren strives to balance different worlds, each fragile and volatile, all primed to implode.

This is a novel about coming of age during the Reagan era, told in the voice of a young man name Daren from high school till shortly after college. It has a small cast consisting mainly of Daren's friends, is rich with period atmosphere in terms of popular music, cultural icons, films, and TV shows, as well as a cornucopia of drugs, bad habits, risky sexual behaviors, and other examples of excess reported at the time.

I remember this period and wondering if what I read and saw on TV was real or This is a novel about coming of age during the Reagan era, told in the voice of a young man name Daren from high school till shortly after college. I remember this period and wondering if what I read and saw on TV was real or a media myth. As I read this novel, I had similar questions about how Daren and pals were able to pay for all the bad habits, attend all the rock concerts, travel to all the exotic places, and get into all the mischief described without working a day.

    I'm probably being too critical.

    The Kindness of Ravens

The novel is set in an idyllic Southern California beach community. It begins as a mystical character--a "druid"--dispenses a bit of sage wisdom regarding women, dogs, and money to Daren, then a high schooler.

As time passes, Daren engages in various activities with a small group of friends. Most are recreational, involving drugs, alcohol, music, sex, and risk-taking. No serious relationships develop until Daren is drawn to an "older" by a few years woman named Lee. Time passes, the relationship develops. A pregnancy, abortion, accidents, hospitalization, absences, separation, returns. Eventually, tragedy ends the relationship permanently. She also loves dogs and pie, her husband, and ravens of course. We'd love to receive a contribution from you too.
