It is a challenge to do something deeper with God and goes beyond the usual youth "preachiness" I fear in most books that dumb it down for teens. Timm does slip into youth preacher mode a bit more than I like, but his depth is also good. He is not afraid to challenge youth to get the noise out of their lives.

Static Jedi | The Art of Hearing God Through The Noise

For anyone else, I recommend other books that can simply help with picking up key spiritual disciplines. Timm repeats himself far too much and divides subjects up into two chapters to add unneeded length. For youth pastors, challenge your youth with some great help. This is a good starter. Please treat it just that way. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Eric Samuel Timm is a man after my own heart. He has a similar ministry to mine in that we both paint and speak. I would count him as an influence and someone I admire. I was really excited to find out he had written a book and knew I needed to read it.

It was not what I expected. I figured I would it would be about art and creativity and in a sense it is, but its not about putting paint on canvas, it's about the art of mastering the noise that tends to drown out the voice of God in our lives. The approach to this is both creative and totally biblical. This was a perfect read for this time in my life. The title is unusual and yet as you turn the pages, you begin to understand the concept. There is this constant barrage of noise around us, millions of signals vying for our attention.

It becomes static, white noise, a total distraction. Timm then spends the rest of his book giving techniques and disciplines to overcome the noise like a Jedi. He delves into such disciplines as rising early to get a jump on the noise, withdrawing to pray some place where you can get away from the noise and hear God, memorizing the Word so that it's hidden in your heart, fasting to gain mastery over the flesh and making disciples.

He does this with wit and wisdom, great examples and illustrations and specific challenges to help the reader become a Static Jedi. In our noisy and overcrowded, media saturated world, this is a very necessary book and I found it immensely helpful. Eric Samuel Timm has created a great work of art in the pages of this book.

Editorial Reviews

It helped me focus and I believe it will be good for you too. This book takes a head-on look at the way so many of us believers live our daily lives. The picture of the large glass bowl with balls having various numbers painted on them, all being blown about by air forced into the glass container, with one ultimately to be chosen by the MC to find the winner for that day's game, is an apt picture of what it feels like in my head way too often--somebody shut off the blower!

Static Jedi Book Trailer

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we allow a lot of unnecessary noise in our lives -- even some of it good noise -- to the point that we rarely actually hear the Lord's voice and live out His word to us. Intentionality is required, which may come in various forms and choices, in order for us to lower the noise level and tune out interference and distraction, so that we can clearly hear God's voice, then make what sometimes seem like hard choices, but if submitted to will yield us the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

The individual, the local church, and the larger body of Christ all stand to benefit from such choices to live as our Master, Jesus Christ.

One person found this helpful. It's a must read. Eric Samuel Timm is as easy to read and as likable as Donald Miller and as thoughtful as the great authors many of us love and look up to.

The pages of this book are riddled with bits humor that make it fun to read and such profound Truths that makes you keep turning the pages. He speaks from an honest place of hard earned wisdom and teaches the reader how to get there, too, by applying 5 keys to a stronger walk and faith.

The way he approaches these keys is so simple yet so profound.

Everything he writes of is backed by Scripture after Scripture. It challenges you and inspires you to action. It will be a book that will be around for a long time. Truths like this don't fade with fads. I look forward to reading more from this author. I will definitely use this book for my small group Bible study as well as read it again personally. Granted it's different for every person, but we do want to know what exactly we're up against. This was another area Timm seemed conflicted on. Sometimes he was talking about how we can get lost in social media, but then he'd go and quote one of his own tweets.

Kind of a mixed message there. Anyway, one of the women in my group tried his week without distractions and really enjoyed it and grew from it. It was definitely not a total loss. Jan 07, Cliff rated it really liked it Shelves: I originally gave this four stars, but after talking about this book with my friends and the light they shed on it, I feel the book deserves another star. It really is worth the read, there's a lot of good advice, just be careful not to turn the advice into a to-do list.

These things can help us grow in our relationship with the Lord, but they do not make the relationship. I've got a full review here: Static Jedi by Eric Timm. Nov 26, Crystal Starr Light marked it as not-my-thing Shelves: As a Star Wars fan, I'm a bit disappointed to see "Jedi" in the title but nowhere in the description. It makes me extremely curious how the author correlates the Jedi with his subject matter. Feb 21, Nick Watson rated it it was ok.

I was disappointed by this book. I love the title, and the idea is good, but the style felt shallow, with too many flippant asides and personal reference to our author and his work. I did get a couple of useful teaching ideas but overall it's not a book is recommend or plan to reread. Dec 28, Stefanie rated it really liked it. He kind of rambles some, but he hits the topic well. Praying about what to apply from this book now. Dec 03, Phillip Ridlen rated it really liked it. I'll start with what I didn't care for: And for a book dedicated to the mastery of the noise that bombards us from our phones, friends, Facebook feeds, and television sets, it sure is noisy.

The book is riddled with ADD-induced breakfast food tangents, sidebars with Twitter posts hashtagged staticjedi , and metaphors that distract from the point. Maybe the Twitter sidebars were a twist of irony and Timm is punki I'll start with what I didn't care for: Maybe the Twitter sidebars were a twist of irony and Timm is punking us all. Tangents and sidebars aside, this book contains some of the most challenging charges to believers--to take up our cross daily and follow him, whether it's through rising early to pray and study, memorizing scripture, or having coffee and toast "with Jesus.

Well worth the read, although if you want the condensed version with fewer contrived metaphors and more meat, read Chapter 1 and then chapters What greeted me was a warming book of sincerity in man's pursuit of God. Eric strikes a sound balance between grace and personal responsibility. We are disciplines, correct? Our journey leads to a decision, to a new birth in God through Jesus Christ. The decision needs to lead to a life of discipleship, of following our Master. Following means action, activity.

Eric give 5 clear actions to engage in, not for salvation, but because of the salvation that is ours through Christ. He has written a book that forces the reader to consider the basics of being a discipline of God with man. A believer and seeker alike will be challenged. May 31, J. Alfred rated it liked it. Timm, who I have seen speak at a school assembly, does a good job of encouraging the youth-group age kids who are generally going to be reading this book to take their relationship with God seriously.

There are some slight issues that I'd argue in the book, both with his expressed theology and praxis, but generally I enjoyed the read and was genuinely challenged by some of his conclusions. Though, if you're over the age of, say, fifteen, the goofy prose style will probably irritate you. A seven Timm, who I have seen speak at a school assembly, does a good job of encouraging the youth-group age kids who are generally going to be reading this book to take their relationship with God seriously.

A seventh grader gave me this book to read. As a rule, I'd say that if your writing and speaking has led seventh graders to lend your book out to their teachers, you're doing some good things in the world and ought to keep going strong.

Maybe if you are high on hashtags and live for the mentions this will be relevant for you, but for me, it was hard to see the content for all the hyped up stories with the obvious points. Reading this book may resul My oppinion on this book, you will be surprised. Give Him your day, each day. God is so much more than I know. Capture the precious now instead of holding onto the hope of tomorrow.

It's just trapped in the pages of ink and paper. God is waiting in His Word. Followers of Christ are the church. Only the Maker can. The world needs Jesus. Think less of what doesn't. When we don't take action, we foster the mistaken reality of our old identity.
