The horrific castration of a man - by 'his' woman, is the theme of the title story. We see the hapless plight of women in this community, and quite frankly many men just regard them as sex objects, blithely, irresponsibly. During her lifetime, author Bessie Head in an interview, actually damned such men as 'evil'. And in the story, Life, a man kills a woman in the community that he is fascinated and dazzled with: Life clearly stands out like a sore thumb! Life, from the city, is free, 'sophisticated', and brings quasi-prostitution to the very conservative community One might as well add in conclusion here that I am enamoured with a comment on this work by The Tribune which wrote inter alia: Oct 02, Derrick rated it liked it Shelves: It's really really short and I read it like a month ago but didn't add it.

If you like strong independent female main characters and a little vulgarity, or just interesting books, you'll like this.

It's a classic novella of Africa and if you read it, it'll surprise you. Jan 05, Nicholas Whyte rated it liked it. An excellent collection of short stories set in Botswana shortly after independence, mostly about women affected by the changes in a colonised and modernising but pre-AIDS society: Christianity, traditional religion, education and especially marriage rites and expectations all get critical attention from Head in a set of sharp vignettes, of which the most memorable is perhaps the title piece, about a woman who murders her husband.

It is a more gritty, se http: It is a more gritty, sexy and brutal Botswana than is to be found in the works of Alexander McCall Smith, and feels more realistic too. Aug 27, Pavel Nedelcu rated it really liked it Shelves: This collection of stories tells the life of the African village and African society in Botswana, which is not an easy task for the writer, since it has to culturaly translate a totally different way of thinking and perceiving the world and its rules.

Nevertheless, Bessie Head is a good writer and has choosen the right words to describe the everyday difficulties of the village life. Feb 18, Alicia rated it liked it. I only read a few short stories out of this collection. All of the stories were good, but I was more partial to the stories that showed the friendship between women or had at least a slight feminist bent. Though the stories were meant to show that men were above vwomen in society, some of these women, particularly in "Heaven is Not Closed", show the strength of women. Oct 15, Brooke rated it it was amazing. Beautiful collection of short stories about rural life in Botswana Oct 31, Wim rated it really liked it Shelves: Collection of beautiful short stories, full of wisdom and of strong women coping with their inferior position in societies dominated by men.

The stories are situated in post independence rural Botswana, and still vibrate strong traditions that clash with christianity and with the modern state. Apr 03, Bill rated it really liked it. Highly recommended for anyone who plans to travel to Botswana. Bessie Head's short stories give you a picture of life in the rural villages, featuring conflicts between old tribal customs and modern ideas, the place of women in society, and jealousy related to increasing economic inequality.

Aug 04, Judaye rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is a book of short stories about the ordinary lives of women in Botswana. The stories are insightful and deceptively simple. I will re-read this book again one day, because I know I'll see something in the stories I missed in the first read. May 27, Jillian rated it liked it Shelves: Writers of color challenge 16 Delightful stories of just-after-independence Botswana. The Collector of Treasures was my favorite. Oct 25, Courtney H. But for some reason notably the fact that I discovered her right before a long, long period in which I didn't do much non-work reading , I never read more, which was a mistake I finally had time to rectify.

Collector of Treasures was a good place to start. It is a collection of stories set in rural Botswana in the early post-independence years. Although told in the style of folklore, they are modern short stories. Which says something, I think: Head is a close, personal writer. She fleshes out the reality of an entire country's upheaval by tightening our focus on a single event or character.

She is a rich, expressive writer--and one who writes without fanfare. Because of that, the climactic scenes or the terrible realities with which her characters contend slip, unassuming, into the pages--and are all the more earth shattering for that in part because what stops us in our tracks--the immensity of the tragedy or injustice is part of the everyday experience for her and her characters.

Head is both an important and brilliant writer, and Collector is a good introduction to her work. Dec 17, Faith Chapman rated it it was amazing. I read this book for school, and to be honest, I wasn't sure if I'd like it. It is extremely eye-opening. They still struggle with family, faithfulness, the meaning of life, etc.
