The Deductive Detective

My daughter has a stuffed buddy named Quaky. Quacky is surprisingly good at playing hide and seek. We have spent hours trying to find him over the years. At one point I commented that we need a detective to find the duck, which led to duck detective, which led to The Deductive Detective. Everyone I could get my hands on!

I was especially drawn to stories that were funny, fantastical or otherworldly. As a writer, I still enjoy exploring possibilities outside normal reality — as long as I can make it back by dinner!

We Love books that we can read together. What interesting things did you learn at Hollins in your Creative Writing Program? The Hollins program was my first experience with an intensive peer critique group. Getting feedback from other writers is one of the most important steps to developing as a writer. I also learned that it is possible to put too much hot sauce on a burrito.

But a story that combines two or all three of these elements rises to a higher level. He manages to create a lovable character in Pigeon. And in this particular story, he adds a nice lesson about using manners instead of just demanding things. Some of the best puns in stories are ones that are so subtle, you may not even realize them until you reread the passage.

What do you aspire to teach your daughter about creativity? What has someone done in your life to encourage your creativity? Everyone who has ever laughed at one of my jokes or stories has unwittingly inspired me to keep creating. To me laughter is the most beautiful sound in the world. Do you think Detective Duck will be working on another case anytime soon?

Duck used subtraction on each page to rule out each suspects. The book includes 2 pages of learning activates for creative minds, Deductive reasoning, compare and contrast the animals.

I recommend this book for classroom teaching. The illustrations by Sherry Rogers are colorful and helps tell the story. One of the cakes is missing from the cake contest. Young super sleuths can help Deductive Detective solve the case. One of them wears a rather guilty look. May 10, ACS Book-finder rated it it was amazing.

The author uses clever language to add humor and interest to the reading of the text. The story is almost whimsical in nature as Detective Duck tries to eliminate those that could not have stolen the cake. The illustrations are large and colorful to keep the interest of young students. Older elementary students will enjoy the book as they will understand the humor. This would be a good book to read to an elementary class that is learning how to subtract by ones. Deductive reasoning helps are located in the back of the book and are very helpful to the teacher.

Why not get them started sleuthing early and using logic. The Teacher Activities for this book are so fun and educational! Animal Classification, animal card games including illustrated animal cards from the story that you can print out, word finds, and more.

Get some great learning in this summer at The Deductive Detective from Sylvan Dell Publishing is a great children's book on deductive reasoning, something that we definitely need as adults! Detective Duck takes a look at each individual animal, and measures it up with the clues he finds for a funny tale of "whodunit". The human like animals are funny and your young readers will really enjoy helping Detective Duck figure out the crime.
