He received his advanced baccalaureate degree from Princeton University in and his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan in He now works with Psychological Health Systems, P. He is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, where he supervises the clinical work of child and family track clinical psychology doctoral students. Mendel has a primary focus in work with individuals and families who have undergone trauma or extreme stress.

He has worked with groups of children whose parents have divorced and with groups of children who have lost a parent, and has published in each of those areas. He has also worked extensively with victims and survivors of child abuse. He facilitated a self-help group for adult male survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

He was the psychologist at the Family Assessment Clinic, an interdisciplinary team at the University of Michigan that provided assessments of families in which allegations of child abuse or neglect had been made.
