Violence, British police stories, character focus Ideal accompaniments: Oct 10, Sarah rated it it was amazing Shelves: She has bad facial scarring due to being attacked in a pub. Hr self consciousness about this causes her to be overly sensitive about it and put barriers up. She is paired up wih DS Dan Baines who has his own issues, his wife was murdered and his son abducted 11 years go.

There is little time for the two o get to know each other as they are soon called to a murder scene. A social worker who has been beaten to d DI Lizzie Archer has just transferred from the Met to take up a new post in Aylesbury. A social worker who has been beaten to death with a hammer. As the investigation progresses more bodies are found but seemingly unconnected.

The story is interspersed wih flashbacks from incidents which made the characters who they are now. The characters are believable and likeable and I look forward to reading the next installment in their stories.

The Scars Beneath the Soul

May 31, Linda Parkinson-Hardman rated it it was amazing. I particularly liked the characterisation. Dan makes us wonder just how we would cope in similar circumstances and whether he has, truly recovered from the events that shattered his life ten years earlier. As with other good detective novels this one leaves you with as many new questions as the old ones are answered and I do hope that there will be a follow-up. Sep 13, John Yeoman rated it it was amazing Shelves: A brilliant police procedural, all the more remarkable for being a debut indie-published novel.

Of course, it's formulaic.

The grizzled old cop with a tragic secret, the fragile young policewoman, the budding romance between them that is forever dashed, plus a predictably mysterious murder. But Sivers twists the strands and sustains the plot with a masterful hand. The close is truly a surprise. All that Sivers could do to enhance this excellent book would be to hire a pro to redesign its cover.

The End Game by Jeffrey Archer audio story

The story is totally professional so why ruin its chances with a d. Jun 15, Alison Gray rated it it was amazing. The story starts with DI Archer's arrival, having transferred from the Met and taken the job that DS Baines has been doing for six months. Before the first murder there is an interesting dynamic between these two. This is a cleverly constructed story which interweaves personal stories with two cases - one a gangland shooting and the other a series of murders.

I enjoyed this story and look This is a police procedural with a number of very interesting characters, not least DS Baines and DI Archer. I enjoyed this story and look forward to Baines and Archer's next case. Jan 18, Rebecca Bradley rated it it was amazing Shelves: A strong procedural with two new protagonists I loved. The prologue starts with Lizzie Archer before she becomes DI and an incident that changes her life.

Something that I can't remember reading in many novels and something that stares you in the face all the way through the novel and is brilliantly done. The plotting was tight and the killer is revealed early on, you just don't realise it Oct 25, Janet Gogerty rated it it was amazing. One of my favourite Kindle reads this year - and I've only possessed a Kindle since February! A fast moving story with main characters who interested me and a good glimpse into the lives of victims and others who find themselves involved.
