A special treat is finding the setting to be near my home town of Cashton, Wisconsin. Vannetta Chapman's story will take you in and warm your heart as you read this delightful Amish romance novel. The characters and backdrop for the story are skillfully written and draw the reader into the story. I found the book both enchanting and hard to put down. Jun 27, Janie R. What a wonderful story! The characters seemed so real to me- Grace was a really sweet girl, felt so bad for her loss, but she was strong and overcame her obstacles.
Miriam was a great teacher who really cared about her students. I enjoyed reading of a day at an Amish school. I liked Gabe,he was a great father, but he like, held his feelings in, and others around him had to read his mind, esp. I did like the way he stood up to Byron Drake! It was very interesting to learn about I loved it! It was very interesting to learn about the Amish in Wisconsin, I enjoyed it! Jun 23, Barbara Shelton rated it really liked it. Heart touching story, sweet miracles to ponder and beautifully written.
The characters are life like and personalities are cleverly and clearly identified. Personally, I was impatient for certain things to happen, and was delighted with the way Vanetta handled their resolve. Well done, Vanetta - I'm looking forward to reading another of your writings. What do you suggest? Jan 23, Susan Hollaway rated it really liked it. Another winner by Vannetta Chapman!

Good, clean, quick, enjoyable read. Jul 12, Kathleen E. Wednesday, July 11, Vannetta Chapman has published more than articles in Christian family magazines.
Vannetta is a multi-award-winning member of Romance Writers of America. She was a teacher for 15 years and currently resides in the Texas Hill country. Visit the author's website. My mother died when I was five, the month before I was six. I was born 50 miles away from Cashton. This story is a story of Grace. How He divinely sets us where we are to be. He refuses help in restoring it and sets out to do it alone. Closed off in pain, he remains, until he must request help. The warmth that follows melts his isolated heart and healing begins for both of them.
I really liked the interaction between Miriam King and Esther Schrocks, the two school teachers who teach together at the one-room schoolhouse. How interesting that they are housed together there on a second floor and not with a family in the district. My dad and stepmother taught in country schools in Wisconsin before my time. My dad said he taught one of his brothers, and my stepmother said she needed to start her own woodstove in the mornings before the students came. They each taught alone. Miriam teaches the younger children and Esther teaches the older children. I think this would be fascinating and I liked how the older students helped the younger ones.
They would learn from each other, hearing them recite their lessons too. One drawback for the teachers would be living and working in the same building, however not so different from a storefront business. They did go to their families on the weekends.
I like how the community stepped in to help each other and it is the story of families embracing each other. It is very well written and the story easily flows. There is conflict that is overcome by being worked through instead of ignored. Our lives really do touch each other. I liked the wisdom of Gabe as he grows within the community and is willing to function within positions he is entrusted with.
From a closed position to giving and receiving, everyone is benefited. Miriam finds out her strengths and weaknesses when she comes up against heart awakenings! Her mother and father are so loving and caring in the ways they live out their lives by example. I look forward to Book 2: A Home for Lydia. The newcomer Gabriel Yoder steps into her life, bringing his daughter, an air of mystery, and challenges Miriam has never faced before. Miriam King and Esther Schrocks taught together in a one room schoolhouse. The two teachers looked similar in appearance, had the same temperaments and could have passed as family. Esther was engaged to marry Joseph. Miriam was still single and it bothered her that other people thought she should be married, but it was her own choice to remain unwed. Miriam taught grades one to four and Esther taught grades five to eight.
This particular morning a tall man neither teacher had ever seen before entered the school room holding the hand of his daughter. He had a long beard which meant he was married. They had just moved to the area and purchased old Mr. Gabe chose to live a solitary life with little Grace after his wife, Hope died. He and his daughter had left Indiana and come to Wisconsin to escape the looks of sympathy and now he had what he wished for — a new beginning with Grace. Miriam decided the child had a right to speak and since she spoke before, she thought between herself, Doc Hanson, and even Gabe, Miriam was determined to set that voice free.
A sudden and severe snowstorm blew in. Everything for as far as the eye could see was blanketed in white yet the snow kept falling, heavily, and would for hours to come. Gabe had to get to the barn to tend to the animals and told Grace she was to stay inside unless she needed to use the outhouse. If she did she was told to hold onto the guide rope there and back.
Grace instead decided to go outside and play with her pet mouse, Stanley. Stanley got away from Grace and by the time she found him she was lost in the forest. Soon a massive search was underway in the middle of a blizzard for little Grace. How does Miriam fit into the picture with Gabe? This was an exciting and well-written story that I would recommend to my friends. Thank you to NetGalley for the preview. Book to be released July Jul 11, Brenda rated it it was amazing. A Promise for Miriam by Vannetta Chapman
Chapman writes a new story, because I know it's going to be a story with a positive message and wonderful characters about the culture that I love to read about "The Amish. An Amish husband sitting at his wife's bedside as she passes away, and their five year old daughter crying for her Mamm. Heartbreaking to say the least, but then w I am an avid reader of Amish fiction, and I always get excited whenever Ms. Heartbreaking to say the least, but then we are propelled ahead a few years and we see the husband Gabe Miller and his young daughter Gracie Anne still aching from the loss, but hoping for a new start they move to Pebble Creek where Gabe is determined to do things on his own.
Miriam King is twenty-six considered an old maid by some standards, she is the school teacher for her district and loves her job, and isn't really all that interested in giving up her job for marriage, and has always been able to keep a professional distance between herself and the students parents. When Gabe enrolls Gracie in school he leaves out one very important piece of information about his daughter, but Miriam figures it out and wants to do all she can to help Gracie overcome her problem, but Gabe isn't to receptive about it.
Thing is Miriam feels drawn to Gabe. Vanetta Chapman created a true to life story that just happens to take place in an Amish community. While the characters in this story are Amish I could easily envision this story happening in any culture. The characters aren't perfect, instead they are struggling with real life issues, that make for a story that is so easy to understand and connect with, but also kept this reader guessing as to what would really happen in the end. Gabe was a character that was very easy to understand, and his protective nature towards his daughter was commendable.
My favorite character in the story easily had to be Gracie Ann, I enjoyed getting her perspective on the things that went on around her. Discussion questions makes this book a perfect group read, and for anyone who isn't familiar with the German dialect used by the Amish the author provides a handy glossary. Fans of Amish fiction will certainly enjoy this book, but anyone who enjoys a greatastic read, filled with wonderful characters, a fast moving, but far from predictable plot and positive messages woven in will certainly want to read this one.

Miriam is a schoolteacher and very proud of what she does, she has stayed single and these students are like her children, now 26 and way beyond getting married stage she meets a new father who is also new to Pebble creek as he moves to the area with his daughter, Grace. Gabriel Miller is a widower and has a rough time raising his daughter alone after his wife died three yrs ago. His daughter does not speak and hasnt for three years and this is a challange for Miriam as she learns to care about each of her students.
Aden is a young man that Miriam has grown up with and he hopes to marry Miriam and even leaves the community and then returns hoping she will have missed him and decide to accept his offer of marriage. His father has a large house and many acres that makes an impressive home. Gabe sees Miriams heart and knows he could learn to care for her as a frau, but thinks she could do better with Aden and he is always dropping hints about this young man to Miriam. The story has much about Gabe and his daughter but also emcompasses changes to the area from an outsider wanting to refurbish an old building in town and make it into a "Amish Abbey" and captilize on the amish.
There had been similar changes where Gabe had lived before and he was able to help form a committee after talking with the bishop and try to get the town to compromise on what the plans were so all would be better for it. Miriam comes to have feelings for Gabe and we watch them dance around one another as their feelings for one another grows. Grace hopes they might get closer but she doesnt see them doing what a courting couple would. Miriam and Gabe finally work together to help Grace "find her voice" and this brings them closer too. You will enjoy this story as I did of a devoted teacher who really wants love of a family and finally gives her heart away to the father of one of her students Jul 07, Ibjoy Hannabass rated it it was amazing.

There are many similarities in most of these books -- not a bad thing at all -- but it is also nice to find the little differences that distinguish the various series or various authors. Sinc As anyone who follows my blog knows, Amish fiction is one of my favorite genres, and I've read lots of great books by several great authors.
Since she has reached an age when most Amish women would be married and probably have children of their own, she has pretty much given up on the idea of looking for real love. Gabe Miller moves from Indiana to make a fresh start with his young daughter Grace, who is still suffering from the loss of her mother three years earlier. He hopes to settle in quietly and stay as unnoticed as possible in the more conservative Wisconsin community.
Things happen -- both frightening and exciting -- which force changes in plans for both Miriam and Gabe. But there was something more than the expected Amish romance here. When I finished reading the book, one of my first thoughts was something like, "That was refreshing! There was a little different twist to this story from many of the other Amish stories I've read. I still haven't come up with the answer to that question, but I'm glad it was there. The characters had a lot of depth. The conflicts the characters had within themselves and with each other were well developed.
The story was told from multiple points of view. Details about the specific Amish community came through in a way that was informative, yet smoothly flowed into the story. Any fan of Amish fiction should read A Promise for Miriam. I don't know how many Pebble Creek Amish books Vannetta has planned, but she has definitely set the bar for a great series! He finds himself in a much more conservative order than what he is accustomed to, yet a warm, friendly and helpful community. Gabe is a widower with an eight year-old daughter, who has not spoken since the death of her mother. He and his daughter, Grace, meet the school teacher, Miriam where Grace begins to attend school. Gabe is somewhat taken aback when Miriam tries to encourage Grace to try to speak again.
He feels this might be too difficult and informs Miriam of this fact causing some friction between them. Because of the frightening incidents that occur, Gabe softens both towards Miriam and to the new community he has come to love and depend upon. This book shares the importance of healing, friendship, community spirit, and love towards your fellow man. I am really looking forward to the rest of the series. The characters came across very real and I found myself liking them a lot.
I also liked how the little girl helped tell the story and how it added a different perspective in an adult world. I have read a few books where a child is included in the 3rd person storyline and it does not fit well but the author did a great job meshing it all together. What I did not like: There is a sub storyline dealing with a planned tourist business that might move into Pebble Creek. To me it almost seemed like an add on and really did not add a lot to the storyline.
It did help build the characters but it seemed to slow the book down towards the end. Over all I really liked this book. I am hoping that we might hear more from Grace in future books of the series. A Promise for Miriam
My favorite character in the story is actually Gabe's daughter Grace, who captured my heart from the opening scenes where she bursts in on her father draped over her mother, who had just died, and is severely reprimanded by her grandfather, an act that literally silences her voice for years. The story had numerous interesting plots and subplots, and the one of Grace finding her voice was a poignant one indeed. The relationship that develops between Gabe and Miriam is also sweet to behold, and their relationship is one that is filled with deep emotion.
