Eventually, the guano industry fell by the wayside, but the islands remain significant in American history.

The Guano Islands set a precedent for insular and unincorporated territory. The issues the government faced with incorporating the Guano Islands were were revisited in , when the United States acquired its first peopled territories—not for commercial reasons, but for colonization.
