Harry thought they looked like the shadowy outlines you see out of the corner of your eye, late a night, in oppressive dark. It nodded, his outline becoming sharper, more detailed. Sirius looked back toward the other figures, silently communicating with slight nods and quirked eyebrows, before his gaze returned to Harry "That depends …". They moved with an eerie grace, gliding towards Harry. The woman knelt down next to Harry, who had sat upright, and placed a warm hand on his cheek, smiling sadly.
Yes, it was his mother, a woman he'd only seen in pictures and mirrors. His father, who Snape always said Harry was just as arrogant and troublesome as, stood behind her, looking at Harry the way a father often looks at his son — with inexplicable pride. Harry looked back at Sirius, who was watching Harry thoughtfully, "What did you mean before? About it depending on me? We don't know why — once again you're defying all logical explanations — but you're still tethered to life.
You can choose to move on or you may go back to where you were. Sirius let out a bark of laughter that echoed through the empty space, "No, this is merely a…meeting-place of sorts. A checkpoint - if you will — before going beyond. That's the best I can describe it. Harry sat, weighing his options.
He felt safe here, with the family he had always wanted, with his godfather. His father said "On" was home; Harry would be going home. Could he really leave the world behind? His friends and adoptive family, leave them without a savior; leave them to struggle alone against the darkest wizard in history?
You must do what you feel is right. Harry let out a quivering sigh, "I should — I need to — go back. But I want to go home," Harry stared at the emptiness surrounding them, "Send me back. I can't leave them with…with my burden. A watery smile crept onto James' face, "We're proud of you Harry, you're a brave man, taking all of this on, fighting for those you love.
We couldn't have asked for a better son. Harry smiled slightly as Lily glared at James, who shrugged unapologetically, and Sirius, who snickered behind his hand. I've read many books that try too hard to make a decent horror story or don't try hard enough and it turns into some modern writing rubbish, however this book gets it spot on.

It's rare that I get this engrossed in a book that I start to think about how it will end when I'm trying to get to sleep, it is absolutely fantastic. Without spoiling the story the book is about an American platoon that gets caught up in a battle with the SS which leads to them becoming trapped in a huge mansion that houses the very door way to hell.
The book is very, very well written and from the battles, strategy, descriptions and eventual horror you will find yourself drawn into it. Even though it's an American platoon there is a very well integrated British officer included which scratched that itch for me! I really don't want to ruin the story but even if you see only considering this book then you won't be disappointed. My only gripe is that there aren't any more to make it series and it had to end!! Sep 23, Sian Williams rated it it was amazing. Such an amazing book! It read like a movie- fast paced where it needed to be and with terrific writing that gave me the most terrifying mental pictures.

Compelling characters and a believable setting — if that can be said for the supernatural. Even the revelations at the end lend understanding to the entirety of the story in a very satisfying way.

The tactics, equipment and weapons described were true to form. The monsters evil and without mercy. Sep 10, Paul rated it it was amazing. Worth a look Superb if simply written war horror. The nature of war is horrible enough but what it does to people is worse and that is one of the themes explored here. Band of Brothers meets Walking Dead I've seen written but that is too glib an answer to this chilling book. Oct 07, Martin Edgar rated it it was amazing. Full of suspense Book moves at a good pace keeping the suspense up and subject matter is uncomfortable at times. Well worth a read if you like this genre even if the setting is not one to your taste.
