The members of the band label themselves as "melodic folk metal. The band also include fairly frequent use of acoustic guitars, usually at the beginnings of songs. The lyrical themes of their music most often relate to fantastical, archaic, or historic stories that can most often be grouped in with Nordic concepts, usually with heroic sentiment.
For the band's name, they took the Latin neuter gender adjective ensiferum, which means "sword bearer". Ihsahn — Das Seelenbrechen. In this case, Ihsahn is basically progressive indie rock with a tendency to launch off on flights of fancy that sometimes involve metally riffs. Further, either this dude has a sinus infection or they autotuned these vocals, which is somewhat repellent if your music is naturalistic.
When we run out of ideas, we run to the past. So it is with Beastmilk, who resurrect s indie rock with a slightly more intense guitar focus, like R. Inferno — Omniabsence Filled by His Greatness. Strongly reminiscent of early Dark Funeral with lower tuning, Inferno provide charging black metal with strong concluding themes and high energy. None of these riffs will really strike you as all that unusual, but they knit together well into songs. To flesh things out, Inferno use fills of sweeps or lead picking between the rushing power chord riffs.
Blizaro — Strange Doorways. Sometimes we confuse having a lot of material with having something epic. Polluted Inheritance — Betrayed. When Polluted Inheritance play death metal, they create a type of very familiar and nocturnal music that feels like moving through a darkened battlefield. This is broken up by speed metal riffs and lead-ups which sometimes have Pantera-style roundabout vocals circling the end of each phrase, causing a sense of this battlefield being broken up by machinery.
In addition, Polluted Inheritance like to drop in sporadic progressive riffing or extremely noodly guitar, often accompanying some of the speed metal riffs. It is gratifying however to find a release that actually wants to be metal, and can execute moments of insight in riff form that evoke the best moments of classic death metal. Boal — Infinite Deprivation. These riffs are designed to contrast each other toward resolution in the old school way, but ultimately are too linear and rhythmic to develop enough phrase. However, the deathgrind portion of Infinite Deprivation is a breath of fresh air, incorporating groove in a subversive and unnerving way and building up to honest culminations.
This album sounds like Venom covering Cream. While none of it is is particularly badly executed, it also sounds dated, like a flashback into the late s which is being resurrected for purposes of nostalgia. The homebrew nature of this band would be appealing if the songs stretched beyond an emulation of that past state in time, but although heavily influenced by the Hellhammer-Bathory first wave of black metal, this music remains in part of that cluster of material that belongs to a time before the underground.
Mostly disorganized, it fails from inability to make a point, although there are no other deficits.

Like most music in this style, which seems to be people who want doom metal with aggressive open intervals instead of minor key ones, the modus operandi of the listener is to experience drone and forget where he is in the piece, then notice periodic interesting bits before descending again into a rumble of confusion. Toxic Holocaust — Chemistry of Consciousness. The whole of the human condition is revealed by this album: As a result, it is a fun listen until you start thinking about hearing it a dozen times. Most of these songs are repetitive verse-chorus with a break to provide contrast before the reprise.
Oddly, the vocals are whispered and distorted like a black metal band but using the rhythms of a late s band like Sodom or Kreator.
Black Metal , death metal , Heavy Metal , oration of disorder , Thrash. The Syriac language provided the greatest historical conduit for Christianity, and early Christians knew its words as literal symbols from the world beyond. Beherit was its name for the god of evil, sometimes called Satan.

Fast forward two thousand years and occult-literate Finns made this ancient word a conduit for a new form of aural evil, a simultaneously deconstructive and reconstructive ambient aura of apocalypse and a literal, fearful reality hiding beneath the neurotic cloak of our modern society. We were fortunate to be able to speak to Nuclear Holocausto about his motivations, the nature of music, and the forthcoming Beherit album. For a musician in this time who has understood his own experience, what are the most important aspects of art? Or is it even possible to create a universal list?
I think it turned out to be quite okay, kind of a mixture of all previous releases. How did you record the new album? Did you write all of it, and then meet collaborators to get it on tape? I wrote and composed the album by myself. I recorded a demo version in my home studio with tablatures and a few written notes about what kind of spirit I was looking for in that song. Then we went to the rehearsal room and for the next week I made some small changes in song structure that made it easier and more natural to play live. Rehearsal period was about three months. We had 60 minutes of raw material when entering the studio.
Why do you usually work and release things in the phases of the moon, or is it something you cannot control? I like to plan my projects in the phases of the moon. For me, there is a natural difference between the things you process on waxing or waning gibbous. With Suuri Shamaani, you are playing with raw sound, but the question becomes not your tools raw sound, or scales but the organization of that sound to express some difference of outlook achieved through experience.
How do you organize this sound, and how does this process compare to that of writing metal? I am very fascinated by the potential to experience some ueber-crossover between genres like black metal, dubstep, doom metal and ambient. Perhaps the biggest challenge is in a composition. What degree of familiarity with music theory do you have, and has this changed since Drawing Down the Moon? I know only very little of music in theory.
Maybe I have learned to tune my guitar faster, but not much else. When you write songs, do you start with a visual, musical, lyrical concept for the whole song, or do you save up riff ideas and fit them together?

After the initial idea, I have a riff and couple of variations. Then some words that stimulate my mind to visualize the atmosphere. Later some variation in tempo, bassline and rhythm. The last part is to rewrite some lyrical content. This may vary a lot depending on the project. Living entities look for happiness, and to avoid suffering.
This is true not only for humans, but animals as well. I think this is the very basic principle. Animals have a hard enough time getting their food and avoiding getting killed, but humans seek their happiness from materialism or very temporary states of happiness, like sex, drugs or love…. I teach you the overman. Man is something that shall be overcome. What have you done to overcome him? All beings so far have created something beyond themselves; and do you want to be the ebb of this great flood and even go back to the beasts rather than overcome man?
What is the ape to man? A laughingstock or a painful embarrassment. And man shall be just that for the overman: You have made your way from worm to man, and much in you is still worm. Once you were apes, and even now, too, man is more ape than any ape. Whoever is the wisest among you is also a mere conflict and cross between plant and ghost. But do I bid you become ghosts or plants? Behold, I teach you the overman! The overman is the meaning of the earth.
Let your will say: I beseech you, my brothers, remain faithful to the earth, and do not believe those who speak to you of otherworldly hopes! Poison-mixers are they, whether they know it or not. Despisers of life are they, decaying and poisoned themselves, of whom the earth is weary: That material I try to save as quickly as possible by guitar or keys to a recorder. A year ago I invested to Ableton Live software. It did help a lot in my productivity. How was this done?

Did you replicate it on the new album? Back in , recording studios were still mostly analog. The guitar sound was as simple as Boss Heavy Metal guitar distortion pedal through an old Marshall bass amplifier and cabinet. No time to remake or mix, thus the raw sound.

He outlined his theory in a six-volume treatise called "The Origin and Progress of Language," which also addressed why Mondobbo practiced nudism. Don't know if this passes the obscurity test, but on a recent Slate Culture Gabfest they were pretty adamant about Laura Redniss's Radioactive being sui generis. Codex Seraphinianus does have a wikipedia page, but it's pretty odd. More art weirdness at the sadly retired Giornale Nuovo.
Patent 4,, by Chet Fleming. I'm rather proud of the fact that I was once left alone with an unguarded copy of this book, and I did not steal it. They're more art than literature, but Timothy C. Ely 's books are weird, somewhat obscure, and most of them are unique in the sense that they exist only as single manuscripts. Lingua Ignota a dictionary of an otherwise unknown language compiled by medieval visionary and hymnist Hildegard van Bingen.
BadgerDoctor mentioned Lord Monboddo and his orangutan theory--that calls for a mention of Thomas Love Peacock's satirical novel Melincourt. Scary--I have actually read at least seven of the books mentioned on the post that Hooks linked to, including Le Ton Beau de Marot , which is wonderful. Hte "treated Victorian novel" A Humument certainly qualifies as unique. Perhaps a little mundane, but anything by Robert Anton Wilson probably qualifies What a great thread! Ruskin's Fors Clavigera are ostensibly a series of letters to the working men of Britain for their moral instruction. In reality they're wonderfully discursive essays that have an underlying hint of madness. That's not a metaphorical title: You are not holding a book you must endure; rather, reading, you feel engaged. The shape-changing book mirrors Aquin himself.
The book is a work of art, sui generis. Genuine, unadulterated 19th-century occult weirdness. It certainly seems to have been remembered, when at all, more for its influence on other people than for its own qualities supposedly it's the unnamed book that corrupts Wilde's Dorian Gray, among other things. It's about hedonism, basically, in the most absolute sense.
