She, Emily, makes us respect her drive and purposes in life but not always understand them. The Smartest Girl In The Room made me think about a time when everything was possible or at least I thought it was, my early twenties.
It made me think about when I first met my best friends and how much they still mean to me decades later.
The Smartest Girl in the Room
It made me think about youthful mistakes, blossoming loves… Bottom line, it made you think. And after all a chicklit that makes you think, how can it not be a wonderful thing read? Sep 20, Diantha Jones rated it really liked it. The writing was very good and descriptive where it needed to be. I did find that the dialogue between characters sometimes ran a little long and that took away from the story a bit.
But overall, I enjoyed the easy flow of the writing. It took some time, but she eventually grew on me. She could get so serious and so in her head at times that it often worked against her and annoyed the hell out of me. But that made a lot more sense especially as her issues with her mother began to be revealed. That helped me understand her character and motivations a bit more.
When Mitch was first introduced, I thought that I would like him right away and I did! He just had this easy way about him that made me just sit back and enjoy his presence in the story. But then he took a sudden turn down Jerk Lane and I was done with his ass. Like I said, things were better by the end but it left a sour taste in my mouth. Never liked his cheesy, fake blah-blah from the beginning and by the end, I absolutely despised him.
I loved me some Zainab, as I have a friend who is just as flaky and full of it as Z and whom I love dearly. Miranda, Richard, Martin, and oh lord, Jessie, were just great supporting characters. Really enjoyed reading about them. At first, this book hit me the wrong way and I gave it a lower rating. But after some thought, I realized the true meaning of it and was pretty impressed. Should you read this book? I received an e-copy in exchange for an honest review. Emily is having a tough time: She's in college, trying to graduate at the ripe old age of 19, taking 5 courses at a time, sleeping on a couch in her mother's study, and just basically trying to survive without having a mental breakdown.
Then she meets Mitch, and all bets are off: He's incredibly handsome, has a great sense of humor, and makes her forget about everything else going on around her. However, things aren't always as th Disclaimer: However, things aren't always as they seem, and Emily's trip through college turns out to be extremely eventful as she meets ever more interesting people. There's definitely a reason why this book sucked me in from the start. There's something in it for everyone, at least one thing that every person can identify with: There's a bunch of characters to keep track of, but their stories all intertwine, just as it seems to always do at college.
There's love, loss, happiness, sadness, comedy, tragedy, and a healthy dose of plain ol' New Adult angst and anxiety to tie it all up nicely. We've all been there, and no matter which character you readily identify with, there's at least one that will grab you and hold on tight, pulling you deeper and deeper into the story. I'm for one going to add this author to my must-read list, and I look forward to more from her very soon.
I always appreciate when an author can do this without going to that super dark side. She succeeds in getting the points across without going overboard making a very enjoyable read! Sep 22, Wise Louise rated it really liked it. The cover is interesting, and certainly stands out from the rest but I can't tell the genre from the cover. Or just maybe a mix of both.

The blurb is short and sweet but the ending needs revising. The opening to the blurb is a good hook and tells us a little about the character: Still, I like it enough to take a look at the Look Inside. It opens with the main character, Emily, and we're told a little about her background but lot more about her friend's, Zainab's, character, so I'm expecting she's going to be a huge character, as well. There are a few classic errors I say classic because I see these particular ones a lot in indie authors: I only saw this in the sample chapters.
There are a lot of BRC and SGC and other initials, which is fine but does become irritating, especially as I forget what they stand for and have to scroll back for a reminder this is YA chicklit, though, and the younger generation mightn't agree. We're also introduced to Mitch in chapter one, and I realise this book will be his story too as we have his POV. The second scene is a LOT better than the opening one and chapter two progresses with Emily and Drew do I detect a love interest there?
I like Emily and want to know what makes her tick. Mitch, as a loveable rogue is an interesting character, too. The chapters ticked along nicely, and when Emily was swept off her feet by Mitch I could feel the dizzy love-sick feeling she was feeling, and it made me remember what it was like at that age and feeling those emotions - so I've HUGE respect for the author for pulling that off. I really did like Emily, and wanted to wrap her up and hug her. She had awful parents, so it wasn't surprising that she felt so strongly for her relationships with her friends.
This is a clever book with some dark issues that I expect are probably prevalent with uni students. It is a slow build and the dialogue could be tighter didn't always know who was talking , but that aside, it's a book with a powerful story to tell with fully-rounded characters. Best of all, I liked how the book took me in a completely different direction from one that I was expecting.
It definitely wasn't predictable. It'll be suitable for the higher-aged YA due to it's drug and sex references.

After a little bit of thought, I decided to jump into it this year. In doing so I realized that I've been at this for a while. Whenever I see some nifty new vegetarian or vegan product, I have three reactions. After intermittently complaining about chest pains for most of my adult life, I finally looked sick enough the first Saturday in April to convince someone that I needed to be seen. The Emergency Department wasn't impressed--and doctors literally said that to me--until a blood test came back "not negative" and showed some damage had been done when I reported being nauseous, dizzy, and light-headed.
Long story short if only because I don't want to have to relive that weekend , it's prob. Been There, Done That: Yesterday my fellow authors and I talked about what goes into our work: But that's only part of the business, and sometimes less than half. Today we're going to talk about the business side: Publishing and MarketingWhy indie publishing? To make myself attractive to publishers and before tha. As you may know from reading this blog, I tend to stay away from traditional "writerly" topics because I know most readers don't care.
I also knew that, with a little bit of begging, I could get some of the other indie authors I know to share their thoughts as well. Today we're going to be discussing what I call the craft side, and tom. Different but Still Good. So far, we've had a twin theme going for this blog hop, thanks to Jami's review of The Parent Trap movies and Morgan's take on the Mario movie the twin I refer to is Luigi, of course. Honestly, that wasn't what I was thinking when I proposed this hop, but since that's how this has played out, I'm going big, because the clones played by Tatiana Maslany on Orphan Black are almost innumerable.
Everything you've heard about Tatiana Maslany is true: Yes, we're back--and this week we're going to be exploring projects that have a different interpretation on a related concept and make you appreciate that sometimes differences aren't always bad things. You get the idea. Watch this space for updates, but please check out. My month of reading dangerously. I did it--I kept my resolution for the month of January and avoided the television as well as internet- and radio news.
I also wrote an average of at least words a day, and the total was something like 17, Honestly, given all the reading I did, this was the easy part. Here's what my completed reading list for the month: Orientalism by Edward Said This book was, in so many ways, everything. About pages long, but the longest pages I have read in years. Who's going to change, me or the internet? Disconnecting isn't just a thing anymore. It seems to be a need. In my last blogpost, I pointed to three other people who felt the same way. I can now point to three more, and as an added bonus, another post that talks about paper and how it isn't going anywhere.
Please read all of them, most of which are short. But I can sum up the message in all of them: This is nothing like what we were promised, whether in the early s or in. Disconnecting is now "a thing". I deleted my Facebook account this week.
I bragged somewhere about doing that before, but I did keep a shadow account so I could maintain a Facebook author page. Finally, after a few years of FB making it harder and harder for anyone to see my posts there, I decided it wasn't worth it. So I deleted my page and I deleted my personal account, which had all of 30 friends on it.
And it feels so good. A day before that I deleted my Instagram I'd been on for less than a year , Tumblr, a. A Clean Romance Instafreebie Giveaway. You may have noticed that the trend in indie romance is toward explicit and erotic. Which is fine, but it's getting harder and harder to find things that are a little less, er, hot. If you've been looking for romance with a little less explicit content, please check out this Instafreebie Giveaway, running today through the 14th.
Something strange is happening in the city of Everett, Washington and Father Niccolo Paladina is tasked with investigating possible demonic activity. Nothing is as it seems, however, and things quickly begin spiraling out of his control. Spock was the most perfect character ever. This is a charmingly observant look at relationships, friendship, and romance. The story is set in Boston. As I read, I got a great feel for student life on the small Boston campus.
I never much warmed up to Mitch again after that first royal debacle. Thankfully, at least, Emily did not make it easy for Mitch to worm his way back into her affections. Personally, I think he should have been kicked to the curb, but you decide, maybe you will feel more charitable. Emily is a strong young woman who has some difficult decisions to make and some hardships to overcome but she does it with grace and style but as a reader you have to keep reading to see how it will end up.
There are tears, moments of laughter, and an ending which is happy but leaves you wanting more. I can only hope that in the future books I'll learn more about these great characters. It's a great read and I truly enjoyed it. I can't wait to see what else this new Indie Author will come out with. I will be reading when she does!
