Typically of the Beatles' North American discography until , the album contains songs that Capitol had withheld from its versions of the band's recent EMI albums — in this case, Help! The album is remembered primarily for the controversy surrounding its original cover image. Taken by photographer Robert Whitaker , and said to be the Beatles' statement against the Vietnam War , [1] this "butcher cover" image showed the band dressed in white smocks and covered with decapitated baby dolls and pieces of raw meat.

Others said it was the Beatles protesting the fact that their North American albums had been 'butchered' — switched around and not as originally intended. The album's title is based on the song " Yesterday ". Having been deleted from Capitol's catalogue in , Yesterday and Today was reissued on CD in In keeping with the record company's policy for all the Beatles' North American LPs until , Capitol Records selected songs for Yesterday and Today that the company had culled from the albums the band released in Britain and other territories overseen by EMI , together with tracks issued on what were non-album singles outside North America.

Yesterday and Today included tracks from the Beatles' two most recent LPs that had not yet been included on American albums, plus three from the LP they began recording in April , plus two songs which were back-to-back on a single: The hodge-podge nature in which Capitol compiled their albums for the North American market infuriated the Beatles. Both Tim Riley [13] and American Songwriter journalist Jim Beviglia classified Yesterday and Today as a compilation album , [14] and MusicRadar said it was one in a series of "hit-filled compilation albums" that the American Capitol label "sliced and diced" from the Beatles' original British albums.

On 25 March , photographer Robert Whitaker had the Beatles in the studio for a conceptual art piece titled A Somnambulant Adventure. The group played along as they were tired of the usual photo shoots; Lennon recalled the band's "boredom and resentment at having to do another photo session and another Beatles thing". According to a interview published in Mojo , former Capitol president Alan W. Livingston stated that it was Paul McCartney who pushed strongly for the photo's inclusion as the album cover, and that McCartney reportedly described it as "our comment on the [Vietnam] war ".

In the United States, Capitol Records printed approximately , copies of Yesterday and Today with this so-called "butcher" cover. Reaction was immediate, as Capitol received complaints from some dealers. The record was immediately recalled under orders from Capitol parent company EMI chairman Sir Joseph Lockwood [24] and all copies were ordered shipped back to the record label, leading to its rarity and popularity among collectors.

At the time, some of the Beatles defended the use of the butcher photograph. Lennon said that it was "as relevant as Vietnam" and McCartney said that their critics were "soft". George Harrison said in The Beatles Anthology that he thought the whole idea "was gross, and I also thought it was stupid. Which they were, but not in that way. Released on 20 June , [32] the Yesterday and Today album's controversial cover marked the first time the Beatles' judgment was criticised by the media and distributors.

A similar photograph from the shoot with Whitaker appeared on the cover of the 11 June edition of the British magazine Disc and Music Echo , [38] [39] accompanied by a caption reading: Record World ' s reviewer included the LP among the magazine's "albums of the week" and wrote: In early , Capitol deleted Yesterday and Today and nine other Beatles albums from its catalogue. The company announced that over the next two years, the Beatles' catalogue would be streamlined to adhere to the band's EMI releases up to Revolver. Numbers designating where the covers originated were printed near the RIAA symbol on the back; for example, stereo copies from the Los Angeles plant were designated "5" and mono Los Angeles copies were marked "6".

Mono copies outnumbered stereo copies by about ten to one, making the stereo copies far more rare and valuable to collectors. Capitol initially ordered plant managers to destroy the covers, and the Jacksonville plant delivered most of its copies to a landfill. However, faced with so many jackets already printed, Capitol decided instead to paste the replacement cover over the old ones.

Tens of thousands of these so-called "Trunk" covers were sent out.

As word of this manoeuvre became known to the public, owners of the altered cover attempted, usually unsuccessfully, to peel off the pasted-over cover, hoping to reveal the original image hidden beneath. Eventually, the soaring value and desirability of unpasted-over Butcher covers spurred the development of intricate and complex techniques for peeling the Trunk cover off in such a way that only faint horizontal glue lines remained on the original cover.

Copies that have never had the white cover pasted onto them, known as "first state" covers, are very rare and command the highest prices. Today, pasteover covers that have remained unpeeled are also becoming increasingly rare and valuable; these can be identified if Ringo Starr 's black V-neck shirt from the original cover can be seen through the paste-over to the right of the trunk lid in alignment with the word "Today" from the album title.

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Covers that have had the Trunk cover removed to reveal the underlying butcher image are known as "third state" covers; these are now the most common and least valuable, although their value varies depending on how well the cover is removed as people continue to peel second state covers. Which was weird because Sophia Loren is such a captivating woman and has led a riveting life. I expected this book to be a fast read but I kept finding myself putting this book aside and picking up other books. I just wasn't in the mood for this book. Cut to a couple days ago, I decided to finally finish this book. I told myself that I would force myself to f 3. I told myself that I would force myself to finish this book i obviously should have marked DNF.

To my surprise and great delight, I started to read this and became completely engrossed. I began reading this and by time I emerged I discovered I had read almost pages.

Loren had waited patiently for me to be ready to hear her story. My Life is more memoir than autobiography. Loren mixes stories, half remembered memories and journal entries.

As with actual memories this book has no flowing timeline. One minute she's telling us about her childhood and then on the very next page she's telling a story of time spent with Fellini. I would have preferred a more coherent timeline but who am I to tell Film Royalty how to tell her story.

My recommendation for this book would be only for Sophia Loren fans or classic film lovers. View all 5 comments. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: My Life

It really is a Cinderella story from rags to riches but there is no doubt that she worked very hard for the transformation in her life. She was determined and resilient and these traits have remained with her. What I am left with is a sense of how important her family is to her and the love that she and Carlo Ponti shared. This is a discreet autobiography and all the better for it. Her grace and st A lovely book from a beautiful person. Her grace and style inhabit all the pages in her book and apart from the description of a truculent Marlon Brando in one of her films there is only kindness and appreciation for everyone who has helped and supported her throughout her life.

I have to admit to being a bit swamped by all the Italian names at the beginning of the film but this may either be an age thing or lack of knowledge about Italian cinema. I knew of the better known directors and actors those that made it to Hollywood but there were lots that I couldn't recognise or pronounce.

She loves cooking and already I am eager to try out her recipes. Her Italian slant on food and life is apparent; "Food makes people happy, it takes you back home, it says so many things that words can't say. She surprisingly was shy; "I lived my life as best I could, hidden behind a thin yet sturdy veil of shyness". Because she was very dark and skinny her nickname was 'toothpick'. What I find remarkably lovely is her approach to ageing. It is the passion for what you do and in the intelligence with which you exploit your own capacities and accept your own limits".

Materially, she is clearly a very wealthy woman but I feel that her feet are firmly on the ground and that she holds deep values. When all her jewellery was stolen she remembers the advice that she was given at the time; "Sofi, listen to me. Never shed tears for something that cannot shed tears for you".

One surprising fact to me was her time spent in prison and how she handled that experience. She cites Harry Truman "Fame is a vapour, popularity is an accident, riches take wings, those who cheer today may curse tomorrow and only one thing endures - character". Sophia Loren's character shines throughout this book.

Sophia Loren knows herself very well and cites George Cukor: Everything depends on self-knowledge and self-love". A lovely mum and grandmother she recognises the need for personal independence. Probably deeply rooted in her own experiences. Sophia has experienced loss and bereavement and her mother's death was painful. It interrupts the timing of the plot and leaves you suspended in an empty space made of darkness and silence" Later she lost her beloved Carlo, the man who was her rock.

There's something profoundly unnatural about having to let go of someone you love so much. You turn this way and that trying to find support, knowing full well that there isn't any. And you feel completely alone, abandoned even by words". Sophia Loren is a legend in her own lifetime. Her book sweeps across history and geographical locations and is breathtakingly sweet. Her philosophy for life has been carved out of her wide ranging experiences and the character that she became.

Nov 18, Mom rated it it was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! Heartfelt and straightforward Sophia takes us on a sentimental journey into her life. She is a strong and courageous woman who has survived many tragedies and hardships where most of us would not recover. Reading this book makes me want to watch some of her movies. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Sophia Loren's as you will appreciate the journey. Anyone else, I caution you to be forgiving of what you may feel is lacking in the writing style. Biographies and memoirs don't need to have spectacular writing, that's what literature is for. Biographies celebrate a person's life and here this book is successful. That's a nice way to start a memoir. It's a warm entry to the reader to learn about someone else, even if the reader really doesn't know much about that person. Such a reader I be. Food Makes people happy, it takes you back home, it says so many things that words can't say.
