Gussie was quite a woman, until a certain pious, holier-than-thou preacher, to whom it just so happened she was married, climbed all over her last nerve. Then all the fireworks in China had nothing on the former saloon dancer, who had a formidable temper. She also had four brand new little step daughters who were just as hot tempered as Gussie, especially when their Daddy got on his high horse.
This is an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone who doesn't mind laughing and cryi My,Oh My! This is an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone who doesn't mind laughing and crying throughout a really great story. Brown, you just keep on keepin' on. Jul 07, Casey rated it it was amazing. Sad to say goodbye Living with the delightfully strong and courageous Dulan sisters through theses five books has been an adventure I'm sad to bring to an end. To view it, click here. I should be honest; I did not know the author or that the series existed. I obtained the book because I had a voucher that reduced the price of the kindle ebook to ninety-nine cents and I was curous of the book. I start the book not even knowing that there are four other books before this one and immediately I cannot put it down.
Of course you can guess the ending on a romance novel, but what made it important to me was the character development. I like strong female lead characters and Gussie I should be honest; I did not know the author or that the series existed. I like strong female lead characters and Gussie does not disappoint in that area. And seeing her develop from the strong independent woman to a loving step-mother and wife of a man that holds different views about marriage and a woman's stance within society, keep in mind that the era is pre-civil war.
While I see the "reason" to pair the two lead characters is weak at best once you get past that then you get to see the fighting that is the interesting bit. I can't help but be reminded of all those romantic comedy movies about two people seemingly polar opposite to each other that they may as well use "opposites attract" as their generic slogan. And while I would put the slogan into this book I at least get the get the feeling that the couple really are opposites, so much that even when they realize their love toward each other you can see the doubt that they have as to why they love each other and they come up with no answer.
I think that's what those movies seem to forget incorporate, once we get to see that they realize they love each other after something seems to spark that insight you know the movie will end. Augusta does have a major event that is supposed to spark the affectionate actions but it doesn't as a plot twist it is just there so that we can get the opportunity to see that they love each other. And while the last few chapters after "finishing their business" have caused me to feel conflicted as to how to take those chapters I can't help but like how Carolyn Brown handles that generic slogan.
To enjoy this book if you like romance novels is get reading and not expect anything from it and to realize and try to look over the plot holes and bad attempts at closing some plot holes. Overall its a good quick read. Jan 27, Kjirstin rated it really liked it Shelves: I enjoyed this conclusion to the Promised Land series. Gussie, the oldest of the sisters, finally meets her match in California, and the sparks fly! As we would expect. I liked the added complication of the kids, and enjoyed a sort of in-general "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" feel to the story.
However, her husband is mean and nasty came close to being bad enough to ruin the book for me, like the last one and has to learn how to treat a lady -- even if she doesn't look and act like you ex I enjoyed this conclusion to the Promised Land series. However, her husband is mean and nasty came close to being bad enough to ruin the book for me, like the last one and has to learn how to treat a lady -- even if she doesn't look and act like you expect.
As everyone learns to live with one another -- and Gussie comes to love her built-in family -- we reach a satisfying conclusion, complete with a "family reunion" epilogue that gives us a tiny glimpse of what happened with each of the sisters in the future.

It showed the driving spirit of five incredible women. One mistake I found in the writing though. Miss Brown wrote that some folks they met on the ride west were from West Virginia. She also wrote that this was before the civil war. West Virginia didn't become a state until well after the war began. Just to let her know.

Choices Love's Valley Historical Romance. She's also the first to be picked from among all the gals off the bride train, and that's not so good. Her intended groom, a self-righteous, judgmental preacher, takes exception to her from the moment he sees her in her best dress, a red satin saloon-girl's finery with black lace trim. But Gussie falls in love with Gideon Jefferson's four headstrong young daughters and consequently determines to make the best of her situation. The strong conclusion to Brown's gentle historical Promised Land series showcases her ability to bring a vibrant time to life in all its glory, as the bride-train women build a community, support each other through the trials of marriage to strangers, and stand up for their right to respect and fair treatment from their menfolk.

A group of women cross the country to become mail order brides. One of the women decides to marry the wagon leader and talks Gussie, a saloon dancer traveling with them, into taking her place. On arrival, the names of all the women are put into a hat and each man who ordered a bride pulls his bride's name from that hat. As luck would have it, saloon dancer Gussie for some reason wearing her red satin dancing dress is drawn by Preacher Gideon. Of course, he refuses to marry her To stop trouble from developing between the would-be grooms and the mail order brides, they agree to a temporary marriage.
Carolyn Brown manages to blend social commentary and humor in this tale of two strong-willed people who learn that kindness and compromise lead to what they really wanted all along I loved, loved, loved this book. She was the only Dulan sister to make it to California. She wanted to go back to be with her sisters but the rest of the 99 mail order brides would not marry their grooms if her husband Gideon the town preacher did not marry her. Gideon was difficult and judgmental. He always thought the worst when she was giving her best.
