The story opens with Josie Vickers Lois Meade's daughter having her shop invaded by insects and snakes. Lois immediately starts to investigate and finds herself involved in the most unusual case she has ever had. Along with Chief Inspector Hunter Cowgill.
Robert Pettison, the zoo keeper, and his nephew are not happy with Lois Meade snooping around and try different things to discourage her from finding out the truth. A death at the zoo and accidents on the grounds of Pettison's house keeps the reader's interest. The story has mystery, humor, and the usual lovable characters involvement. It was lots of fun getting to know all the regular characters. I would love to be able to find this little village and set down for a visit with all of them! Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase.
Series: Lois Meade
Another look at the crime in a small English town and the head of a cleaning service who sticks her nose in everyone's business. In the several novels in this series, Lois has become more and more nosy, meddlesome and gives unasked-for advice to everyone. Does her would-be boyfriend police lieutenant know she is advising people who were crime victims not to go to the police? Not sure I will be reading any more in this series. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I like anything by Ann Purser and her mysteries are my idea of what a 'cozy mystery' should be.
I can almost see the characters because they seem so real and the books are a great escape. I don't know that everyone will feel the same, but I can almost taste the sponge cake and see the little store her daughter runs and walk with the dog in the woods No mystery here - the reader is always informed of any mystery within a page or a couple of pages.
See a Problem?
It's difficult to imagine that villains are as stupid as they are in this book. In addition, the author seems to forget occurrences in the plot and frequently contradicts events and conditions previously reported in the story. Tollervey-Jones is still a sweetheart!
I have totally enjoyed the Lois Meade mysteries by Ann Purser. I have read them all in order of publication except for the one not yet in paperback. I find the plots and the people quite entertaining. If there could be something described as a very good "soft murder mystery" that won't totally repulse readers and make them cringe with horror, these books would be in that category. I read the previous series and am now reading this one. I love her "British Cozy"books. Always a mystery to be solved and you get to know all the characters well. Never bad language or any other nonsense so even my granddaughters can read these books.
If you like English cottage mysteries this series is for you.

Snakes in the village store, frogs on the stars, and a water gun filled with red dye But, the story was a hoot to read. Ann Purser comes up with the strangest crimes- like Nancy Drew with an English accent and some Clorox wipes. Nov 23, Susan rated it really liked it. This is my first book by this author and while I enjoyed the English village feel of the story the animal aspect seemed odd. Also, the relationship between Lois and Cowgill seems a bit creepy to me.
I am surprised that the author does not have her husband be at all concerned with the inspector's stalker like behavior. Not sure about continuing with this series. Dangerous acts by adults passed off as public school type pranks but when Lois cracks her noggin by tripping she won't forgive the guy she was talking to????????
Dumb plot with characters repeating stale disgruntlements from previous books. Jul 04, Nancy rated it did not like it Shelves: This was not for me. I couldn't stand the characters, I found the plot contrived and uninteresting, and the writing style a little too cutesy for me. I think it is the genre though, and not just the author. Cozy Mysteries have yet to impress me. Mar 09, Theresa rated it it was amazing Shelves: In the village of Long Farnden Lois Meade is solving the mystery of wild animals. They're showing up in the mysterious places and the owner of the local zoo is mysterious himself.
Lots of interesting villagers to keep the reader entertained in this cozy mystery. Jan 07, Marlene rated it liked it. I love Lois Meade and her family but this one dragged on too long. No mystery since the reader knows from the start who the guilty party is. Feb 19, Erlyne rated it really liked it. This series has escaped me before, but I think I must go back and catch up with the characters and the previous mysteries involving Mrs. So hard to engage with these characters. I don't care for them as people! They snip at each other, and just coast along. The mystery was good, but anticlimactic.
Dec 13, Mary rated it liked it Shelves: Lois comes across as a bit dim in this one.

Dec 03, Diane rated it liked it. Love this series, but this is my least favorite book. Just didn't find the story interesting or the characters very good. Jul 16, D Nichols rated it liked it. Story set in England current day.

Obviously part of a series but I don't think I'll rush to read the rest of the books. Apr 09, Cathy rated it liked it. Much better than "Five". I wonder how long this writer can keep things going in Long Farnden, England. Everyone in the family has had something bad happen and some more than once. Jul 31, Kathie rated it it was amazing.
This series is so much fun. I loved catching up with all the characters and going ferreting again! Aug 11, Candy rated it it was amazing Shelves: Started reading Suspicion at Seven. Love the Lois Meade series. Tina Brazeal rated it liked it May 14, Kim Kasanic rated it it was amazing Feb 23,
