When recovering, he decides to drop in on his ranch that he inherited from his father but has had little to do with in years. Hoping to sell it, he ends up with more than he expected with a ranch full of passionate misfits who refuse to give up the place without a fight. Callie is just such a former misfit who runs the Blue Flame Ranch.

She is passionate, fiery, and fiercely loyal. And she has quite a thing for Jake, even though she tries to fight it. The book is formulaic at times and a little overly complicated at others. But it was a nice read over all. I recommend one of Jill's Lucky Harbor novels over this one though. This is the second story for Firefighter Friday and the final one before my September 11th rememberance blog will be Seeing Red. As with White Heat, I was disappointed that this was not available last summer. I was excited to hear that it was coming to Kindle since I can't read print books anymore.

I am a huge fan of Jill Shalvis, so I plan to finish reading all of her books at some point. This story was different than any other stories I have read by Jill Shalvis but it was still Sarah's Review: This story was different than any other stories I have read by Jill Shalvis but it was still good.

While it was difficult for me to get interested in it, I was able to finish it. It may have been my schedule though for the reason that I could get interested in it. Callie works for the Blue Flame but wants to buy it from Jake. Some strange start happening after Jake appears at the Blue Flame. This book has been on my to-read list for over a year while I tried to find a used copy. She's written other romantic suspense titles, but these seem to be the most complex as far as characterizations and story. Jake was a player, and it was interesting to watch him come to terms with his past and his future. Callie had the most real strength of character in many ways, and I liked that Shalvis paired the alpha-male Jake with a strong female lead who could hold her own. The suspense plot was fine, and although it wasn't a huge part of the book it helps with character development and provides a focus for the story.

Well worth the effort to find a used copy. Nov 13, Cheryl rated it liked it. Originally printed in - second in Firefighters series I liked this second book in the Firefighters series, after "White Heat," but did enjoy the first book more. Callie Hayes, the manager of the Blue Flame Guest Ranch in Arizona, and Jake Rawlins, injured firefighter and owner of the Blue Flame, are more fully developed but I still would have liked to know more about them OTHER than their Originally printed in - second in Firefighters series I liked this second book in the Firefighters series, after "White Heat," but did enjoy the first book more.

I like romance with my romance novels not just sex. Also, I would have liked the location fleshed out. This takes place on a guest ranch in Arizona and we find out what the buildings look like more than the countryside. This wasn't a terrible romance novel but I do like author Shalvis' more recent books. Sep 06, Melinda rated it it was ok Shelves: So not my favorite Jill Shalvis book.

So here's the non-spoiler version of the plot. Tortured, snooty, firefighter bumps heads with stubborn, independent, rancher woman. Obviously they are hot for each other but they both have life issues they really need to let go of in order to move on. Usually if the sex scenes are hot or the other characters are interesting, then an intense plot that involves real life emotional struggles is bearable but in this case not so much for me. There are subplots th So not my favorite Jill Shalvis book. There are subplots that are intended to lighten the mood or redirect focus but I think that I have read more of Shalvis' more comedic work, I wasn't ready for this book.

Also I'm not sure that ranching is all that interesting for me either. Jul 06, Sharon rated it liked it Shelves: The sex scenes were decent, but nothing over the top. It's just an average romance novel with nothing to really make it stand out. I'm guessing I'll forget about it soon! I didn't know it was part of a series I just picked it up off the paperback shelves of my public library but it doesn't suffer. I'm guessing the series is abou A decent read I'm guessing the series is about firefighters individually and not really connected.

What is Kobo Super Points?

I make that guess because the hero in this book is a firefighter but none of it takes place at the station to introduce other characters for future series installments! Jun 19, Kathryn rated it liked it Shelves: This was romantic suspense rather than contemporary, unlike the other books of hers that I've read. The villain was telegraphed early in the story. The personal growth of the hero was developed more fully, yet the heroine would have required growth to achieve a stable relationship.

Still some basic respect between most of the characters, a nice secondary relationship and a good articulation of the hero's growth moves this one closer to a 3.

Still not a keeper but good enough for a lazy summer afternoon. Loved this story of Callie and Jake.

Injured firefighter Jake goes to his inherited working ranch to heal for a while. He has no interest in keeping the ranch and he's looking to sell. His estranged younger brother works and lives on that ranch, along with a myriad of characters and animals. Included in this group is the beautiful, tough, hard working Callie. They all call the ranch their home and look out for each other, except for Jake, who feels like he doesn't belong.

What will happen to them all when Jake sells? This story was sweet, exciting, hot, touching, and even had a little mystery. I really enjoyed this one! By the time it gripped me the book was half done and I was a little pissed at Callie for taking so long to get her act together when she did the result was beautiful and I couldn't put it down, the end was worth the hassle and I was right about the bad guy. I would say all in all if you read this book be patient it is worth it just for the end. Jul 30, Iris Blobel rated it liked it. It was a quick and easy read. Jake's a fire fighter in San Diego.

After an accident while trying to rescue a little boy from a fire he retreats to his ranch he inherited from his late father's. But he doesn't really fit in. It's one of Shalvis' earlier books and I have to admit, as much as I enjoyed reading the story, it wasn't one of my favourites.

I couldn't warm up to either Jake or Callie.

I'm so happy with this book for two reasons: I finished reading this in a day! The ranch setting definitely had its appeal to me, the laid back lifestyle and doing work that was fulfilling made the story worthwhile. Jake's character was sweet and hot at the same time, I couldn't help but feel giddy whenever he tried to change for Callie.

Callie on the other hand reminded me of myself and how I would handle work and care for others I'm so happy with this book for two reasons:
