Vanessa is Trevor's girlfriend, she dropped out of school and she isn't a very nice person. This story takes place in a high school in a city in the south. It takes place during the 's. The town has gangs in it and a lot of people who don't have much, so the stories setting plays a big part in what happens in the story. I would recommend this book to middle or high school students. This book shows the importance of having good friends you can trust and who will look out for you.

Oct 11, Angela rated it it was ok Shelves: A leveled reading selection for urban teens. While the plot points were obvious and the language often clunky, this title and its companions in this series could be great choices for librarians and educators working with reluctant teen readers who are far below grade-level. Jun 12, Aaliyah Hopkins rated it it was amazing. Good story with a good lesson!

Apparently Trevor was involved with this girl Vanessa previously and she messed him up. She targets him again much to the chagrin of his friends. But Trevor won't listen to them. Soon, Trevor is being pressured to buy Vanessa nice things and he just can't afford it. He steals money from his mother's secret In this Urban Underground title, Trevor is a good kid who works hard in school and a job because his mother is raising three boys herself, working in a rest home, and bearly making ends meet.
He steals money from his mother's secret stash and buys expensive jewelry for Vanessa. But his best friend, Jaris and Trevor's older brother intercede and make Trevor return the gift. There is also another plot line where Jaris' younger sister, Chelsea has a friend and her mother is seeing someone she just won't accept and as a result, her mother stops seeing the man. The problem I had with this book was that it kept repeating the same things over and over throughout the book.
Even though this series is for reluctant readers, I thought it was over done and took away the enjoyment of the story. I am going to have my students read this and see what they have to say. I really liked the Bluford series but this is definitely different writing. The covers are visually appealing, I just have to see if the students see the constant repetition as a turn off.

Jan 05, Dina A rated it really liked it. I really like this book. I love the author she is very simple and gets right to the point without making it really complicated. I think Jaris is a friend everyone would like to have because he is a good friend and always doing what best, and on top of all that he still takes time to drive his sister places and help her when he has his own life and girlfriend to hangout with.
