This collection of short stories was my first introduction to steampunk, and I loved it! I really enjoyed the reimagined takes on classic stories, and I found myself wishing I could read the whole original story from that perspective.

Until Mechanized Masterpieces, I was a steampunk virgin and very anxious to get my proverbial steampunk cherry popped. This anthology is the perfect first for anyone interested in sampling some steampunk. All of the stories have some kind of combination of steam, cool gadgets, horror, science, and Victorian and western clothing of the 19th century as A.

Stewart describes in her interview. The stories range from twenty to sixty pages, written by top-notch writers and polished by top-notch editors. The stories share commonalities of the genre, but also stand out as unique pieces of fiction. I was immediately captivated by steampunk's originality.

Steampunk and Mechanized Masterpieces

There are a handful of rules for the writers to follow, but imagination of characters and plots are infinite. I really enjoyed A. Stewart's Our Man Fred. She patterned her short after Dickens' A Christmas Carol, giving a nod and wink to Fred, Scrooge's nephew, as her main character. As bizarre as the plot sounds, Stewart suspended my belief while keeping it fun and fantastical. I even sensed a bit of Sherlock Holmes going on in the story. I thought of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Match Girl on the first page and was delighted to find that was the story he used for his masterpiece.

Mechanized Masterpieces: a Steampunk Anthology

And so, as I began writing steampunk, I was pretty happy to be accepted in an anthology by the same publisher — Terra Mechanica: I loved writing in the genre. It had some elements of science fiction, elements of fantasy, yet was also kind of fresh and new.

It was a great experience. But in a lot of ways, it felt like even more of an accomplishment to have been accepted in the sequel to my modern introduction to the genre — Mechanized Masterpieces 2: It is an anthology of steampunk stories inspired by classic American literature. As before, the stories run the gamut of style and sources of inspiration. I hope that it will prove to be as good an introduction to steampunk to others as the first one was for me. I took what I thought was a different approach to the story than is usual, even discounting the steampunk elements.

Another story that surprised me was A Princess of Jassom. I read A Princess of Mars only a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.
