Comfort ye my people : from Handel's Messiah (Musical score, ) [theranchhands.com]
Maybe this score will help remedy that. My modification was, with tempo and timpani, to milk the ending for all it was worth. This is my favorite movement from The Messiah because it seems to have a driving intensity and yet is very beautiful and melodic at the same time. Big thank you to Kidd Msc for this awesome idea! This particular piece had been performed by renowned choral group; known as the Fela Sowande singers,Sara Botkin being the lead singer, organist: Ayo Oluranti, and Directed by Oyebade Dosunmu. It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April , and received its London premiere nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.
Handel's reputation in England, where he had lived since , had been established through his compositions of Italian opera. He turned to English oratorio in the s, in response to changes in public taste; Messiah was his sixth work in this genre. Although its structure resembles that of conventional opera, it is not in dramatic form; there are no impersonations of characters and very little direct speech. Instead, Jennens's text is an extended reflection on Jesus Christ as Messiah, moving from the prophetic phrases of Isaiah and others, through the Incarnation, Passion and Resurrection of Christ to his ultimate glorification in heaven.
Handel wrote Messiah for modest vocal and instrumental forces, with optional settings for many of the individual numbers. In the years after his death, the work was adapted for performance on a much larger scale, with giant orchestras and choirs.
In other efforts to update it, its orchestration was revised and amplified by among others Mozart. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries the trend has been towards authenticity; most contemporary performances show a greater fidelity towards Handel's original intentions, although "big Messiah" productions continue to be mounted.
Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; the crooked straight, and the rough places plain.

Christian Collins Software http: I finally got around to uploading a piece from Handel's Messiah! And I thought it would be appropriate since Christmas is coming up very soon: This is my favorite bass solo, personally. The melody is so catchy! I've never really sang before, except in a children's choir at my church a looong time ago, but last week I went to a Handel's Messiah sing-a-long and I actually sang! I'm very shy when it comes to singing in front of people, but singing together with other bassists is the best!
It's also a very good way to learn. I have to say I'm not too bad! All those years of piano helped me a lot: Anyway, I am trying to learn this.
